In PERPUSTAM they use Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The DDC system is
one of the most widely used classification systems in libraries. DDC is a hierarchical
system that divides all knowledge into 10 main classes, each of which is further
divided into 100 subclasses. This makes it possible to classify materials very detailed
and precise. When cataloging a new item, a librarian will first identify the item's
subject. Once the subject has been identified, the librarian will assign the item a
DDC number. The DDC number is then used to shelve the item in the library.
PERPUSTAM use DDC because they want to Standardized framework for
classifying library materials. It assigns a unique number to each subject area,
allowing for consistent organization and retrieval of resources. This standardization
ensures that libraries using DDC can easily share and exchange cataloging
information. DDC also widely use so it easy for the library interoperability and
cooperation among libraries. It facilitates resource sharing and cataloging exchange,
making it easier for users to access materials from other libraries that use the same
classification system.

DDC also known about its expandable and flexible , its alow for the addition of new
subjects or the reclassification of materials as knowledge evolves. Libraries can
incorporate new areas of study or emerging topics into their collections without major
disruptions to the existing classification system. DDC uses numbers as classification
codes, making it relatively easy for library staff and users to understand and
navigate. The numeric notation allows for quick location of materials on the shelves
and facilitates efficient retrieval.
In conclusion, The cataloging and classification of library materials are essential to
the organization and accessibility of a library's collection. In a public library, these
practices are especially important, as they allow patrons to easily find the information
they need. The Dewey Decimal Classification is a widely used and flexible system
that can be adapted to the needs of different libraries. It is a valuable tool for
librarians who are responsible for organizing and providing access to library
materials.
