Critical Listening (201)

Define and provide examples of several critical texts.

1. Review Text
Text that presents a review or critique of a work such as a book, movie, artwork, stuff,
and vice versa. The purpose of review text is to evaluate an artwork, when reviewing,
reviewers must be so critical so that the result of the review can reassure the audience of
the result.
Example:

I really loved The Avengers Endgame (2019) movie, it has a total of 4 movies since the first movie in
2012. The movie has a ton of stars such as Robert Downey jr, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Evans. This is
the biggest Marvel movie in phase 4, they really dedicated the superhero movie’s enthusiasm.

This movie is a sequel to the previous Avengers movie called Infinity War in 2018, it’s been said that in
the previous movie half of the superheroes were eliminated by the main villain ‘Thanos’ using the infinity
stone, after that in this movie the superhero survivor tries to figure out how to get back half of their
friends, hereafter they building a time travel machine to get back in time to collect infinity stone at each
time. At the end of the movie, the massive war happens in a masterpiece way.

This movie is 3 hours long with a lot of excitement and adventure of superheroes. The storyline is perfect,
they take various time sets from each Marvel movie in order to set up the time travel concept. The movie
has a ton of action. The highlight of the movie is how they use CGI in the entire movie. They give us a
really perfect eye enjoyment of the CGI battle in the end. the time travel concept from the movie really
amazed the audience, therefore the movie has a big possibility to lead the highest grossing movies.

This movie is still interesting to watch in 2023 for the superhero movie enthusiasm. The movie provides a
big CGI battle with an amazing soundtrack. The director of the movie the Russo brothers really made this
movie the highest-grossing movie in 2019. The movie is really great to watch with family.

2. Exposition Text
Text that provides the writer’s idea to analyze the topic that has an opinion is correct by
developing an argument to support it.
Example:
The Importance of Working Out in our daily life

We all know that exercise is crucial in our daily lives, but many of us don't understand why or what it can
do for us. Here are some of the advantages of working exercise.

Exercise boosts energy levels. Exercise increases the strength and efficiency with which your circulatory
system transports oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. When your cardiovascular system is functioning
properly, everything appears to be easier and you have more energy for the enjoyable aspects of life.

Exercise increases muscle strength. Staying active maintains muscular strength and flexibility in joints,
tendons, and ligaments, helping you to move more freely and avoid injury. By keeping joints in
appropriate alignment, strong muscles and ligaments lessen your risk of joint and lower back pain. They
also enhance coordination.

3. Argumentative Text
Text that uses evidence and facts to support the claim it’s making. Its purpose is to persuade the
reader to agree with the argument being made.
Example:

As online learning becomes more common and more and more resources are converted to digital form,
some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and, in their place, everyone should
be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription.

Proponents of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are expensive
to maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they won’t have to travel to
a library to get a book; they can simply click on what they want to read and read it from wherever they
are. They could also access more materials because libraries won’t have to buy physical copies of books;
they can simply rent out as many digital copies as they need.

However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books and resources
are associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. A study done on tablet vs book
reading found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information, and understand
10% less of what they read compared to people who read the same information in print. Additionally,
staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause numerous health problems, including blurred vision,
dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much higher instances than reading print does. People
who use tablets and mobile devices excessively also have a higher incidence of more serious health issues
such as fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain. I know that
whenever I read from my e-reader for too long, my eyes begin to feel tired and my neck hurts. We should
not add to these problems by giving people, especially young people, more reasons to look at screens.

Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries offer is book lending.
Libraries have a multitude of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location.
Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to converse with their
neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering patron questions, and keeping
the community connected. One neighborhood found that, after a local library instituted community events
such as play times for toddlers and parents, job fairs for teenagers, and meeting spaces for senior citizens,
over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community. Similarly, a Pew survey
conducted in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their local library
would have a major impact on their community. People see libraries as a way to connect with others and
get their questions answered, benefits tablets can’t offer nearly as well or as easily.

While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to
spend even more time looking at digital screens, despite the myriad issues surrounding them. It would
also end access to many of the benefits of libraries that people have come to rely on. In many areas,
libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a
simple object.

4. Discussion Text
Text which presents a problematic discourse. This problem will be discussed from different points
of view. It presents pro and contra opinions on certain issue.
Example:
Homework must be fanished

I've been debating if homework is required. I believe that homework is beneficial since it allows us to
study and update our work. Homework assists folks who are not particularly bright in remembering what
they have learned. Homework is beneficial since it aids in our education. However, doing things from
home is not always a good option. I believe we should not have homework since I enjoy going out to eat
or to the movies after school. Homework might be tedious and unimportant at times. I dislike homework
since I enjoy playing and talking with my family. Homework, in my opinion, is neither wholly bad nor
entirely good for students' education.

5. Debate Text
Refers to the language used in a formal discussion, both verbal and written. It contains the
justifications, assertions, supporting details, and refutations made by participants in a discussion.
Debate material is meticulously prepared to present convincing arguments, provide evidence to
back up claims, and successfully counter opposing ideas.
Example:
Topic: Should students be given unlimited freedom?

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,

Near adulthood, adolescence declares itself. So, shouldn't an adolescent be permitted to explore the
world's wonders on his or her own? The current atmosphere and educational facilities undoubtedly
facilitate this. However, I am convinced that some form of guidance is required for their impressionable
young minds.

It is true that the modern world provides a wide range of opportunities for people of all ages in all
disciplines of expertise, and everything is available at the touch of a button. However, by pressing the
wrong button, one can gain access to potentially damaging information. As a result, there must be some
form of control over the amount of independence a teenager has.

One could argue that aren’t teenagers capable of deciphering the good from the bad as they are on the
threshold of adulthood? I agree with this thought but too much curiosity can lead to added confusion and
even chaos. Some kind of parental guidance should be exercised on teenagers regarding the kind of
movies to be watched, the books to be read, friends to have, etc.

Some of us may strongly protest as to why can’t we be on our own and enjoy life. But the truth is that the
world consists of both good and bad things and teenagers are not in a position to differentiate between the
grey areas amidst good and bad. So the parents’ guidance to a certain extent is essential.

Therefore, I think that while creative urges and the inquisitiveness of teenagers about the goings-on in the
world should not be suppressed with too much parental interference, teenagers, on their part should not
insist on complete freedom to make their choices in life.

Thank you.
