What is biotechnology? Biotechnology is the integration of natural sciences and engineering

sciences in order to achieve the application of organisms, cells, parts thereof and molecular
analogues for products and services.
Stages of Biotechnology
1. Ancient Biotechnology- The earliest example of biotechnology is the domestication of plants

and animals.
2. Classical Biotechnology- Classical Biotechnology. The second phase of evolution and

development of biotechnology can be called 'Classical Biotechnology'.
3. Modern Biotechnology- "Modern biotechnology" is used to distinguish newer applications of

biotechnology, such as genetic engineering and cell fusion from more conventional
methods such as breeding, or fermentation.
Branches of biotechnology
1. Red Biotechnology- What is the red biotechnology?
Red biotechnology deals with biotechnological techniques such as gene therapy

(replacing a defective gene causing diseases by a healthy gene), stem cell research (to
fight off leukaemia), genetic engineering (changing the genetic makeup of genes to
produce improved organisms) and the development of new drugs

textiles, pharmaceutical substances
4. Grey Biotechnology- Grey Biotechnology refers to environmental applications, and is focused

on the maintenance of biodiversity and the removal of pollutants/contaminants using
microorganisms and plants to isolate and dispose of different substances such as heavy metals
and hydrocarbons.
5. Blue Biotechnology- This fifth volume in the Commonwealth Blue Economy Series, Blue
Biotechnology, provides a high-level assessment of the opportunities available for economic
diversification through the development of a blue biotechnology sector in SIDS for food, health

1. Microbial Biotechnology- Microbial biotechnology, enabled by genome studies, will lead to
breakthroughs such as improved vaccines and better disease-diagnostic tools, improved
microbial agents for biological control of plant and animal pests, modifications of plant and
animal pathogens for reduced virulence, development of new industrial .
2. Agricultural Biotechnology- Agricultural biotechnology, also known as agritech, is an area of

agricultural science involving the use of scientific tools and techniques, including genetic
engineering, molecular markers, molecular diagnostics, vaccines, and tissue culture, to modify living
organisms: plants, animals, and microorganisms.
3. Animal Biotechnology- Animal biotechnology is a branch of biotechnology in which molecular

biology techniques are used to genetically engineer (i.e. modify the genome of) animals in order
to improve their suitability for agriculture, industrial, or pharmaceutical applications.
4. Forensic Biotechnology- Forensic biotechnology deals with the study and investigation of
genomic information for the identification of specific signatures. The data obtained from
forensic biotechnology are utilized by the legal system to make necessary interpretations about
criminals.
5. Bioremediation-Bioremediation is a process that uses mainly microorganisms, plants, or

microbial or plant enzymes to detoxify contaminants in the soil and other environments.
6. Aquatic Biotechnology- Aquatic biotechnology involves the application of science and

engineering for the direct or indirect use of aquatic organisms or parts or products of
living aquatic organisms in their natural or modified forms.
7. Medical Biotechnology- What is Medical Biotechnology? Medical biotechnology is a branch of

medicine that uses living cells and cell materials to research and then produce
pharmaceutical and diagnosing products. These products help treat and prevent diseases.
8. Regulatory Biotechnology- The three main Federal agencies responsible for regulating the safe
use of genetically engineered organisms are APHIS, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Food and Drug
Administration (FDA).
