LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 8
RELATIONSHIP OF EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR ANGLES OF A CONVEX POLYGON
Lessons about angles have a great importance in our daily life, because almost everything we
see in our surroundings consist of different angles, isn’t it? This Activity Sheet (LAS) will guide you to
understand fully the concept of angles and polygons, specially the relationship of exterior and interior
angles of a convex polygon.
At the end of this learning activity, you should be able to derive inductively the relationship of
exterior and interior angles of a convex polygon. M7GE-IIIf-1
Example 1. Find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a convex pentagon.
Solution:
Pentagon has 5 sides. Then, using the formula for Sum of the interior angles of a convex polygon,
Si = (n – 2) 180
= (5 – 2) 180
= (3) 180
Si = 540 , this means that the sum of the interior angles of a convex pentagon is 540.
Example 2. How many sides does a convex polygon have if the sum of the measures of its interior
angles 1,980?
Solution:
Si = (n – 2) 180
1,980 = (n – 2) 180
1,980 = 180(n) – 360
n = 1,980 + 360 apply the addition property of equality
180
n = 2, 340
180
n = 13 , this means that a polygon with 1,980 as sum of its interior angles have 13 sides.
Example 2:
1. A convex heptagon has exterior angles with measures 30°, 33°, 45°, 54°,67°, and 79°. What is the
measure of an exterior angle at the seventh vertex?
Solution:
Let x = be the seventh exterior angle
x + 30+ 33+45+ 54+67+ 79 = 360
x + 308 = 360
x + 308 – 308 = 360 – 308
x = 52
Therefore, the measure of an exterior angle at the seventh vertex is 52.
