Question 1. Indicate the conditions likely to be experienced physiologically when


a person is exposed to an environment with CO concentration of 0.08 % for 0.2hr,
0.7hr, 1hr, 1.5hr, 2hr and 5 hr (NB: Please use the “Toxicity of Carbon monoxide as
a function of the concentration and time” given below) [6 marks]

Question 2. (a) Using figure 2.3 (from handout), indicate the possible effect of
carbon monoxide exposure on a person based on the following conditions. [9

Question 2. (b) What conclusion can you draw from the above observation. [2

Question 2. (c) Under what conditions is a person’s blood haemoglobin expected


to be saturated with approx. 40% of carbon monoxide, when he/she is exposed to
an environment with 4.0 parts CO per 10000 parts of air? [6 marks]

Question 2. (d) What activity of a person will result in 50% CO saturation of the
haemoglobin if he/she is exposed in an environment with 7.5 parts of CO per 10000
parts of air for three hours [give the answer and show, with a diagram, how you
arrived at the answer]. [4 marks]

Question 3. Not all asphyxiating gases are considered toxic. True/False. Please
explain your answer. [4 marks]

Question 8. Calculate the minimum velocity of air required to avoid layering of


methane gas in an underground mine when width of the airway is 1.83 m, layering
