5.1 All cables are XLPE insulated PVC outer sheathed, copper conductor, mul? core cables,
armored for direct buried and un-armoured for above ground installa?on. The cable
armouring shall be SWA*/AWA** and the outer sheath shall be Flame retardant and
termite resistant PVC suitable for 90°C maximum rated conductor temperature. All cables
shall be UV light resistant and shall be provided.
5.2 Motor power factor and efficiency shall be considered as per IEC and same shall be
updated upon receipt of actual data. The motors shall be IE3 type.
5.3 The following installa?on condi?ons are considered to arrive at overall de-ra?ng
factor for cable ampacity;
Air temperature is considered as per temperature +45 deg.C for electrical cable
laying indoor and outdoor loca?ons.
Ground temperature is considered as per temperature +45 deg.C for direct
buried electrical cable laying outdoor loca?ons.
5.5 Values of Resistance & Reactance are taken from Riyadh Cable catalogue (Please refer
Appendix-2)
5.6 Cable Ampacity is selected from Riyadh Cable catalogues (Please refer Appendix-2)
5.7 Cable Ampacity shall be based on maximum conductor temperature of 90ºC for XLPE
insula?on.

A. Cable con?nuous current carrying capacity influenced by various de-ra?ng factors based on
installa?on method and site condi?ons.
B. When SCPD is current limi?ng type, conductor cross sec?on is based on let through energy of
short circuit protec?on device (SCPD). Cable k2S2 value should be more than SCPD let through
(I2t) value. Let through values of ABB make, SACE Tmax XT MCCBs are considered for cable sizing
purpose. When SCPD is not current limi?ng type, it is checked that short circuit current
withstand by cable for ≤ 1 second is greater than the fault current.
Note:
Maximum of the conductor cross-sec?on calculated by A to D above is to be selected.
Criteria ‘D’ are applicable only for DOL started motor feeders.

(Note: Factor √3 shall be replaced by Factor 2.0 for 1-phase voltage drops.)
The minimum cross sec?on of any cable shall be such as to ensure that no damage occurs to the
cable in case of a short circuit un?l fault is cleared by protec?ve device such as breaker or fuse.
For short circuit clearance dura?ons of 0.1 sec. ≤ t < 5 sec., the following formula is used
for calcula?ng the minimum cable sizes:
K²S² ≥ I²t
√
i.e.
For short circuit clearance dura?ons (< 0.1 sec.) of current limi?ng devices, k²S² must be
greater than the value of the transmiSed energy (I²t) specified by manufacturer of the
protec?ve device.
Maximum let-through energy value of 150A MCCB is 0.48x106 and Min. standard cable size is 6 sq. mm.

Project Document Number: PM210011-NUI900-EC1-00020 Release Purpose: Issued for Client Review Rev: 02
As per Cable sizing, doc. No. PM210011-NUI900-EC1-00020, the selected cable size for the 150A breaker
is 70 mm2.
k2S2 ≥ I2t
1432 702 ≥ 0.48x106
Condi?on 1 Ib ≤ In ≤ Iz and
Condi?on 2 I2 ≤ 1.45 x Iz
Where
Ib = Full load current for the circuit
Iz = Con?nuous current-carrying capacity of the cable (adjusted ampacity)
In = Rated current of the protec?ve device
I2 is the current ensuring the effec?ve opera?on in the conven?onal ?me of protec?ve device
(conven?onal tripping current I2 = 1.45 In is assumed, The current I2 ensuring the effec?ve
opera?on of the protec?ve device shall be provided by the manufacturer.)
Note- For the adjustable protec?ve devices, the rated current In is the current seang
selected.

Since the selected breaker size is more than the Full load current, so the selec?on of breaker is
complying the condi?on 1.
Op?on 1
Ampacity of 4C x 70 Cu Cable 173 Amp (Refer the Appendix-2)
Con?nuous Ampacity aber de-ra?ng, Iz = 173x 0.89 = 153.97 Amp.
Op?on 2
Ampacity of 4C x 50 Cu Cable 139Amp (Refer the Appendix-2)
Con?nuous Ampacity aber de-ra?ng, Iz = 139x 0.89 = 123.71 Amp.
Op?on 3
Ampacity of 4C x 35Cu Cable 35 Amp (Refer the Appendix-2)
Con?nuous Ampacity aber de-ra?ng, Iz = 114x 0.89 = 101.46 Amp.

Now, The conven?onal tripping current I2 = 1.45 In =1.45 x 125= 181.25 Amp.
Condi?on 2 is I2 ≤ 1.45 x Iz
181.25 amp ≤ 1.45 x 153.97 amp
181.25 ≤ 223.25
L =10 meter
V = 400 V
R = 0.343 Ohms/Kilometer (Refer the Appendix no-2)
X = 0.086 Ohms/Kilometer (Refer the Appendix no-2)
CosΦ = 0.85 (Assumed)
SinΦ = √ (1 – Cos2Φ) = 0.526
Ib = 85.20 Amp
N = No. of parallel cable Runs
Hence for the selected cable (70 mm2 Cu Cable), the voltage drop is within limit.

LV Power Cables
The values given apply to cables laid in free air and shaded areas at 55⁰C. It is assumed here
that heat dissipation by convection and radiation will not be impeded, that the ambient
temperature will not rise and that there are no external heat sources. These conditions can be
taken as met if:
• The cable is laid at least "one cable diameter" from the nearest wall, floor or ceiling.
• The spacing between adjacent cable is at least twice the cable diameter.
• Cables being laid above each other have a vertical separation of at least twice the cable
diameter, the cable systems are at least four cable diameters or 30 cm.
• The rise in ambient temperature due to the dissipating heat is taken into consideration or
adequate space and ventilation is provided.
The leading ampacities determined according to IEC 60287 or CENELEC 64 will be identical.
They are based on the following figures for the thermal resistivity of the insulating materials.
PVC : 6.0 Km/W
XLPE : 3.5 Km/W
We also hold computerized calculations for the most varied working conditions and can
determine the maximum permissible load currents for almost any practical service condition.
