6.0 CRITERIA FOR CABLE SELECTION

The sizing of power cable shall be based on the following considera?ons:

A. Cable con?nuous current carrying capacity influenced by various de-ra?ng factors based on
installa?on method and site condi?ons.

B. When SCPD is current limi?ng type, conductor cross sec?on is based on let through energy of
short circuit protec?on device (SCPD). Cable k2S2 value should be more than SCPD let through
(I2t) value. Let through values of ABB make, SACE Tmax XT MCCBs are considered for cable sizing
purpose. When SCPD is not current limi?ng type, it is checked that short circuit current
withstand by cable for ≤ 1 second is greater than the fault current.

C. Voltage drop during running condi?on

D. Voltage drop during motor star?ng condi?on(for Motor loads).

Note:
Maximum of the conductor cross-sec?on calculated by A to D above is to be selected.
Criteria ‘D’ are applicable only for DOL started motor feeders.

As per Cable sizing, doc. No. PM210011-NUI900-EC1-00020, the selected cable size for the 150A breaker
is 70 mm2.

k2S2 ≥ I2t
1432 702 ≥ 0.48x106

100 106 ≥ 0.48x106

Criteria of k2S2 ≥ I2t is sa?sfied, hence selected conductor size is acceptable.

10.0 SAMPLE CALCULATIONS

(a) System Data

Load Name = 900G06-P730A

Feed from = 900-P412
Length of Feeder = 10 meter
Demand Load = 59.03 kVA
Voltage = 400 V
Frequency = 60 Hz
The opera?ng characteris?cs of a device protec?ng a cable against overload shall sa?sfy
the two following condi?ons as per SBC_401, clause 43-3.1:

Condi?on 1 Ib ≤ In ≤ Iz and
Condi?on 2 I2 ≤ 1.45 x Iz

Where
Ib = Full load current for the circuit
Iz = Con?nuous current-carrying capacity of the cable (adjusted ampacity)
In = Rated current of the protec?ve device

I2 is the current ensuring the effec?ve opera?on in the conven?onal ?me of protec?ve device
(conven?onal tripping current I2 = 1.45 In is assumed, The current I2 ensuring the effec?ve
opera?on of the protec?ve device shall be provided by the manufacturer.)

Note- For the adjustable protec?ve devices, the rated current In is the current seang
selected.

(b) (Step-1) Circuit breaker sizing

Full load current (Ib) = KVA*103 / (√3*V)

= 19.93 * 103 / (√3*400)
= 85.20 Amp
Nearest Nominal (In)
With 20% spare = 125A
Breaker Size (In) = 125 AT (125AF)

Since the selected breaker size is more than the Full load current, so the selec?on of breaker is
complying the condi?on 1.

(c) (Step-2) Continuous current-carrying capacity of the cable

Installa?on method Indoor Cable tray

Overall de-ra?ng factor 0.89 (Refer to dera?ng factor
calcula?on)
Demand Load 59.03 kVA
Voltage 400 V

Full load current (Ib) 85.20 Amp

Op?on 1
Ampacity of 4C x 70 Cu Cable 173 Amp (Refer the Appendix-2)
Con?nuous Ampacity aber de-ra?ng, Iz = 173x 0.89 = 153.97 Amp.
Op?on 2
Ampacity of 4C x 50 Cu Cable 139Amp (Refer the Appendix-2)
Con?nuous Ampacity aber de-ra?ng, Iz = 139x 0.89 = 123.71 Amp.
Op?on 3
Ampacity of 4C x 35Cu Cable 35 Amp (Refer the Appendix-2)
Con?nuous Ampacity aber de-ra?ng, Iz = 114x 0.89 = 101.46 Amp.

Considering the future load/addi?onal requirements we are proposing 16mm2 cables

which can carry a full load current up to 65.86 Amps aber de-ra?ng.

Page | 10
Project Document Number: PM210011-NUI900-EC1-00020 Release Purpose: Issued for Client Review Rev: 02

Checking for Compliance the condi;on 1 and condi;on 2

Iz = 153.97 Amp (Refer the sec?on 10. c)

In = 125 AT (Refer the sec?on 10. b)
Since Iz ≥ In as per above data, so the selected breaker and cable size complying the
condi?on 1.

Now, The conven?onal tripping current I2 = 1.45 In =1.45 x 125= 181.25 Amp.
Condi?on 2 is I2 ≤ 1.45 x Iz
181.25 amp ≤ 1.45 x 153.97 amp
181.25 ≤ 223.25

So, the compliance of condi?on 2 is also verified.

(d) (Step-3) Checking the cable for the Voltage drop

%Voltage Drop = [√3 * L * Ib * (R CosΦ + X SinΦ) ÷ (V * N * 1000)] * 100

L =10 meter
V = 400 V
R = 0.343 Ohms/Kilometer (Refer the Appendix no-2)
X = 0.086 Ohms/Kilometer (Refer the Appendix no-2)
CosΦ = 0.85 (Assumed)
SinΦ = √ (1 – Cos2Φ) = 0.526
Ib = 85.20 Amp
N = No. of parallel cable Runs

%Voltage Drop = [√3 * L * Ib * (R CosΦ + X SinΦ) ÷ (V * N * 1000)] * 100

= [√3 * 10 * 85.20 * (0.343 x 0.85 + 0.086 x 0.526) ÷ (400 * 1 * 1000)] * 100

= 0.12

Hence for the selected cable (70 mm2 Cu Cable), the voltage drop is within limit.

GUIDELENES FOR LOAD CAPACITY

The loading of the cable must be so limited that, at any point of the cable installation, all the
heat produced in the conductors under set conditions can be safety dissipated to the ambient
medium. Experience has shown that cables may be loaded as indicated in the tables The values
stated in Table no. 1 for cables laid in ground are based on standard service conditions mostly
used in power systems of electricity boards.

Load Factor : 1.0

Thermal resistivity of soil : 2.0 Km/W (dry area)
Ground temperature : 40oC
Air temperature : 55oC
No. of Cables/System :1
Laying depth : 0.7 meters
The current values apply to cables laid direct in the ground, bedded in sand if necessary and
covered with table tiles. It is also assumed that any pole mounted distribution points will be
shielded from direct sunlight.

The values given apply to cables laid in free air and shaded areas at 55⁰C. It is assumed here
that heat dissipation by convection and radiation will not be impeded, that the ambient
temperature will not rise and that there are no external heat sources. These conditions can be
taken as met if:
• The cable is laid at least "one cable diameter" from the nearest wall, floor or ceiling.
• The spacing between adjacent cable is at least twice the cable diameter.
• Cables being laid above each other have a vertical separation of at least twice the cable
diameter, the cable systems are at least four cable diameters or 30 cm.
• The rise in ambient temperature due to the dissipating heat is taken into consideration or
adequate space and ventilation is provided.
The leading ampacities determined according to IEC 60287 or CENELEC 64 will be identical.
They are based on the following figures for the thermal resistivity of the insulating materials.
PVC : 6.0 Km/W
XLPE : 3.5 Km/W
We also hold computerized calculations for the most varied working conditions and can
determine the maximum permissible load currents for almost any practical service condition.
