1. Word of welcome
Welcome to the Technology and Innovation Management module! Many organisations
acknowledge the importance of technology and innovation for sustainable competitiveness.
We hope that you will learn some fundamentals regarding the management of technology
and innovation and how to apply it successfully within organisations. Remember that we can
spend only a limited time together to exploit the new insights, so teaching and interaction will
be intense and interactive. And most importantly: The major part of the learning experience
depends on the effort you put in yourself.

3. ETM Programme objective

The honours programme in Engineering and Technology Management is aimed at engineers and
scientists who have recently completed a bachelor’s degree and who have insufficient work
experience or require an entry qualification to enrol for a master’s degree in the technical
management sciences.

The honours programme provides the first step towards technical management and exposes the
young graduate to the management of technology and the management of technological innovation
through predefined modules as well as a research project.

By successfully completing the honours programme, young engineers and scientists should have
improved their ability to manage technology and have the knowledge on how to develop and deploy
technology innovations.

4. Module description
The module aims to develop theoretical and application knowledge of technology and innovation
management. To remain sustainable organisations must develop a competitive advantage while
meeting the needs of their stakeholders. Technology and innovation are strategic enablers to achieve
this. “Technology is the knowledge, products, processes, tools, and systems used in the creation of
goods or in the provision of services” (White & Bruton, 2017). “Innovation is the process whereby new
and improved products, processes, materials, and services are developed and transferred to a plant
and/or market where they are appropriate” (Rubenstein, 1989). Technology and innovation
management is the process used to coordinate technological and innovation processes to achieve an
organisation’s strategic objectives.

6. Teaching philosophy and approach
The teaching approach will be based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, apply a “Flipped Classroom” and a hybrid
teaching model. The approach for the course requires from the student to prepare selected materials
before class contact, to complete electronic quizzes, to attend classes, to perform presentations, to
write a report and to write an exam. Class sessions will be used to review theory, to discuss and debate
the principles, to discuss case studies and practical applications, to perform practice applications and
to present group projects. The Internet (clickUP) will be used throughout the semester to facilitate
groups and communication.

By the 12th of March, the online Mini-Quizzes must be completed. There will be seven (7) Mini-Quizzes.
Each Mini-Quiz will have 10 multiple-choice type questions and must be completed within 10 minutes
each. A student will have two attempts per Quiz. The highest mark per Quiz will be used for grading
purposes. The questions for the Quiz will be randomly selected by the clickUP system from a list of
questions (thus if you perform a Quiz for the 2nd time the questions will not be the same). This is an
individual assignment. The first Quiz will cover the Study Guide and the remainder of the Quizzes will
cover a theme of the module (See Module content).

11.2 Group Assignment Presentation

The Group Assignment Presentation will entail a group presentation to the class on the 14th of March.
The requirements of the presentation will be available on clickUP. Topics will be made available and
class members will be able to self-enrol on a first come first served basis until the group is full. The
group topics will be published on clickUP. Group presentations must be loaded onto clickUP by the

with the lecturer before the 10th of March to confirm whether it will be possible. It is important to
note that any presentations loaded onto Blackboard Collaborate will not be able to illustrate
animations. The presentation must be 20 minutes or shorter. Each member in the team must take
part in the presentation. For the presentation and the report, it is highly recommended that you
familiarise yourself with Altlas.ti and utilise it for the assignment. Please contact IT support to assist
you with the installation. There are many online videos and training material that you can access.

11.3 Group Assignment Report

The Group Assignment Report will be on the same topic and be performed by the same team members
