HW 3.2 — due Monday, 9/19 @ 10pm EDT Yinue _________________

#1: Complete the following 2 exercise sets in the MGTA workbook:

• Assignment 3.4, I. A. — All.
• Assignment 3.4, II. A. — All. Use accidentals on individual pitches, not key signatures.

#2: The melody of Jerome Kern’s “The Way You Look Tonight” (1964) is below. The song is in
AABA form — the music shifts to a different major key in the B section (the “bridge”), but the
key signature does not change.

First, analyze this melody with SDs:

• Label the major keys of the A and B sections below the staves
• Use the pattern of accidentals to help identify the key in the B section
• Annotate the melody with scale degree numbers (SDs) in each key

Then, on the blank staves on the next page, use SDs to transpose the melody:
• Label the major key given by the key signature in the A section
• The transposed B section will be in D major, which does not match the key signature
• Using your SD analysis, transpose the AABA-form melody to the appropriate two keys
• The first note is given
• You’ll have to use accidentals in the B section
• Be sure to use good notational hygiene — proper stem direction, beaming, etc.

#3: Write a short paragraph (~4 sentences) explaining how the circle of fifths is a useful aid for
quickly spelling and identifying major scales and key signatures. (You might imagine that you’re
trying to explain this to a friend.)

Be sure to address how the circle helps specify both the number of accidentals in a major key,
and the order in which these accidentals appear in a major key signature. Feel free to annotate
portions of the circle to aid in your explanation.
