SIMOC
OVERVIEW
Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) is the brainchild of SIMCC. After organizing the
Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) for a decade and competing in various international
math competitions, along with the experience of running Maths Warriors and Mind Sports contests in Singa-
pore for more than 18years, SIMCC decided to incorporate these into a new international contest (SIMOC) in
2015 that would let students experience the thrill of math games along with the challenge of solving
puzzles.
The first SIMOC was held in Singapore on August 12, 2015. Thirteen countries attended along with 414
participants and over 350 parents and teachers. In 2022, we achieved a record of 2,162 contestants from 27
countries and territories attending the 3rd SIMOC online despite the COVID pandemic, showcasing SIMCC’s
leadership in organizing global competitions. For 2023, we are targeting at least 2000 contestants in Singa-
pore from over 30 countries and territories, our largest physical gathering of SIMOC in our 9th year.
OBJECTIVES
Encourage creative thinking and build contestants’ problem-solving skills
Develop their ability to enjoy mathematics and apply them in real life
Promote a culture of international understanding, sharing and learning among students from
different countries
Forming Teams
After the individual Math Olympiad round, all students will be divided into 3 different divisions,
according to their grade to take part in Maths Warriors and Mind Sports Challenge.
At SIMOC 2023, the students will be grouped into a team of 3 and placed into their division by SIMOC organizers.
Each team will be comprised of a member from a different country and as much as possible a different grade within
the same division.
Each student will join 2 partners from different grades and countries to compete in one of 3 divisions
Math Olympiad Contest

Math Warriors is a game that tests student’s ability to do mental sums as well as strategic
thinking. There is also an element of luck involved which makes the game even more
exciting.
HISTORY
It was designed in 2002 by Henry Ong, the Founder of SASMO to help students weak in
math to develop faster mental sums skills and master the Times Table. It is used by many
Singapore Primary schools to improve mental math processing, strategy and thinking skills.
The first National Primary Schools Maths Warriors’ Challenge started in 2004 and was hosted
by Nan Hua Secondary School. It was introduced as an event in the inaugural Singapore
International Math Olympiad Challenge last year and was very received.
At SIMOC 2023, the students will be grouped into a team of 3 and placed into their division
by SIMOC organizers. Each team will be comprised of a member from a different country
and as much as possible a different grade within the same division.
Each student will join 2 partners from different grades and countries to compete in one of 3
divisions:
This competition will encourage pupils to play math more often. It is an excellent opportunity for
them to improve their mental math as well as increase their skills in fractions, percentages,
probability and definitely strategy.
COMPETITION RULES
3. For the preliminary round, each team of 3 will pit their skills at each table. They will play the
best of 5 to 6 games to determine the winner. For each game, the team gains points as
follows:
a. 2 - 0 = 3 points b. 2 - 1 = 2 points
c. 1 - 2 = 1 point d. 0 - 2 = no points
4. During each match, contestants must state the operation(s) and attack (Strength or Mind)
that they are using to capture their opponent’s die. For any attacking team/player who
does not do so, his opponent can raise his hands to call a Judge to ensure compliance and
the judge could disqualify the offending team.
5. Once the die/dice used in the attack, the player/team must re-roll their dice. If any player’s
die/dice is accidentally moved, and both players can agree to the numbers on the die/dice
previously, putting them back in the proper number is allowed. If there is any
disagreement, then the die/dice affected should be re-rolled. In case of further
disagreements, raise your hands to call a Judge in to ensure compliance and the judge
could disqualify the offending team.
6. If any team does not make an attack within 15 secs, the opponent team can call for a Judge
to ensure compliance and the judge could disqualify the offending team.
7. At the end of each game, the Event Director will ask the winners to get a stamp and the
other team will get a cross mark on their score cards. Every player will move one position
clockwise, so there is a rotation of players.
8. At the end of the preliminary round, all contestants from the same team must submit their score
sheet to the section chief for tabulation of results. The best 64 or 32 scores (depending on group
size) will be selected for the Finals.
9. For the final 64 or 32 teams, we will use the following progression process:
a. Final 64 Round - 2 x 32 teams = > winners go to Final 32
b. Final 32 Round - 2 x 16 teams = > winners go to Final 16
c. Final 16 Round - 2 x 8 teams = > winners go to Quarter finals
d. Quarter Finals - 2 x 4 teams => winners go to Semi finals
e. Semi Finals - 2 x 2 teams => winners go to Final
f. Final - 2 teams => winner is champion, and other team is runner up
3rd/4th Match - 2 other teams from semi-finals will vie for 3rd and 4th place
The 1st 4 teams will get certificates for placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
10. For the above matches, teams will be competing as individuals against 3 members of the
other team. Scoring will be based on the results from the 3 players. So teams with score of 2-0
or 2-1 will be declared the winning team.
11. Judges and the Event Director will be assisting in any issues or disputes (please refer to rules
on How To Play) that arise during the competition. By participating in this competition, you
agree to abide by all of the above-said rules and regulations.

Mind Sports
The puzzles are usually put together or take apart metal or wood puzzles, string puzzles, and math
challenges with manipulative supplied. These will require the team to collaborate, tap on their combined
creativity and problem solving skills to complete these challenges.

Refund Policy
The contest fees paid by students to the competition are non-refundable. To host the competition, our
organization invests a significant amount of time and resources, not to mention the various charges
incurred to process the payments and registration.
As a social enterprise, SIMCC operates with a very lean team and limited resources to keep our
operating costs low in order to make our competition affordable to all students. Hence, we will not
be able to offer any refunds for competition fees to students who withdraw or cancel beyond our
control.
If any student has been wrongly charged by SIMCC, or we cancel an event due to reasons under our
control, we will happily refund the fees paid by the students.

SOAR
I am Henry Ong, Founder of SIMCC and Scholastic Trust
Singapore. Like many others before me, I am paying back for
all the support from my many mentors in my life.
In 2022, we were invited by the Math Tournament Directors from
Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley to host the
global round of the Stanford Math Tournament (SMT), Berkeley mini
Math Tournament, and Berkeley Math Tournament (BMT). We have
incorporated these prestigious Ivy League Math Tournaments with
the Singapore Math Global Finals and Mustang Math Tournament
(MMT) to offer to our SOAR social equity program to offer to needy
students for free, improving their portfolios for admission to top
American universities with scholarships through our University
Scholarship Passport Program (USPP).
SIMMC
This year, we are launching the SOAR program, to reach out to needy and disadvantaged students
“Sharing Opportunities, Achieving Recognition”. We were inspired by Alfred Wu Hardy, an autistic
Indonesian student from a disadvantaged single family, whom SIMCC and our Indonesian partner,
Rudy Susanto sponsored, to compete at the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge
(SIMOC) 2019 in Singapore. Alfred went on to win Gold at SIMOC and Rudy and SIMCC again
sponsored Alfred to attend the Young Achievers Leadership Academy (YALA) 2019 camp in
Singapore. This year, Alfred gained admission as a first-year Computer Science student to Institut
Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS Surabaya), which is one of the top public universities in Surabaya,
Indonesia. To celebrate Alfred’s achievement and Rudy’s generosity, we named our initiative SOAR,
with A= Alfred, and R = Rudy.
In each of the 42 countries, SIMCC supports, we offer 5% of enrolment to SOAR students from
disadvantaged families to join our international competitions run locally by our partner for Free.
Once these SOAR contestants win a silver award or above, we will sponsor them to join our online
Singapore Math global final and Ivy League Math Tournaments in the same academic subject.
We then invite and sponsor the highest-scoring SOAR student from each country to join SIMOC 2023.
Hopefully, we will identify our next Alfred Hardy!
Our top USPP experts will support SOAR students to determine the highest yield valued extra-curricular
activities and how to maximize their choices to best demonstrate their skills to create their brand and
express their unique personality for their university applications
Our goal is to help these students SOAR over an increasingly competitive application crowd — making
sure they strengthen their portfolio to gain admission to top universities with scholarships.
