I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Classrooms, textbooks, and success are only a small part of education and
experience. Extracurricular activities allow students to express themselves and explore
their interests, skills, and talents in a variety of ways. Furthermore, it is a system that
encourages students to make continual efforts to further develop their potential in a
comprehensive and integrated manner, resulting in individuals who are academically,
spiritually, and physically balanced and harmonious, and have a strong sense of
discipline. Extracurricular activities are an integral part of today's academic program. It
fosters a positive character, provides opportunities for growth, and teaches discipline,
devotion, persistence, and self-control. Such activities are now widely regarded as an
important element of the college experience, with a variety of advantages for participants.

Some students enjoy participating in several extracurricular activities, while others

do not. As a result, their level of commitment and interest in extracurricular activities is
limited to what they desire and are willing to do. One of the advantages of participating in
these extracurricular activities is the opportunity to acquire leadership abilities, such as
time management, stress management, delegation, decision-making, and meeting
facilitation. Participation in extracurricular activities is also vital for adolescents. Students
who engage in these activities improve their academic performance as well as their social
lives. Many peer pressure issues can be alleviated by extracurricular activities. They make
a positive difference in the lives of students, their families, and our communities. Because
they have been exposed to such possibilities, these activities produce well-rounded
children who learn what their interests and abilities are. With that being said, it might lower
academic stress because of the benefits extracurricular activities can give.

While most extracurricular activities might be enjoyable and help students bond
with their peers, the fact remains that most students are stressed out as a result of their
courses. Furthermore, the majority of the students are frequently overburdened with
homework, leaving them with little free time. Furthermore, chances are students already
have a difficult time juggling their busy schedules, and enrolling him in multiple

extracurricular activities can cause them to miss lessons and even be late with their
assignments. Time management is extremely important during school because students
frequently need to set aside several hours to complete projects, homework, and review
classes. Extracurricular activities can eat into this and affect his time management,
resulting in a drop in his academic performance.

With all the benefits and drawbacks, it is perplexing the effects of curricular
activities on the students especially, the reduction of academic stress and burnout. The
scope of this research is the freshman students of BS Psychology who take extracurricular
activities, regardless of the category they are in. This research will focus on the S.Y. 2021-
2022 in Batangas State University JPLPC Malvar. Students that will not fall under the
scope will not be entertained and will not be part of this study.

A. Statement of the Problem

The COVID-19 pandemic has made a tremendous change in our education system.
Due to this sudden change, the students are experiencing academic stress and burnout.
However, schools and universities continue to provide extracurricular activities, and it
undeniably plays a vital role amid uncertainty. In addition, several empirical studies have
been conducted, yet researchers were not focusing on explaining the benefits of
extracurricular activities in stress management. Thus, this paper aims to determine how
participation in extracurricular activities helps in reducing the academic stress and burnout
of the students. Specifically, this study shall seek answers to the following research
questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the students in terms of:

1. 1. Age
1.2. Gender
2. What kind of extracurricular activities help in coping with the academic stress and
burnout of the students?
3. What are the academic stress and burnout levels of first-year BS Psychology students?

4. Is there any significant relationship between extracurricular activities and students'

academic stress and burnout

II. LITERATURE REVIEW

Foreign Studies
According to a study by Finnerty et al., (2021) previous research has linked
involvement in extracurricular activities to cognitive, social, and well-being advantages.
According to the results of the survey, students engaged in a range of extracurricular
activities during this time, with the most popular being listening to music, watching movies
and series, virtually chatting with others, and engaging in social media. All extracurricular
activities were evaluated as beneficial to well-being, with outdoor exercise, virtual
socialization, and music listening receiving the highest marks. Social engagement was key
in these activities, with students reporting engaging with people (online or in-person) in the
most helpful activities.

An experimental study by Hv et al.,(2022) with an objective of finding out the

effectiveness of engagement in extracurricular activities to lessen stress and improve the
academic performance of students. Using a cross-sectional post-test quasi-experimental
design they examined students who participated and not participated in extracurricular
activities. It was revealed that involvement in extracurricular activities improves the ability
of the students to handle stress. Participation in extracurricular activities reduces
academic stress and improves students' academic performance and overall well-being (Hv
et al., 2022).

Local Studies
According to the findings of a study by Cleofas (2019), there is a link between
engagement in school groups and depression. Students who participated in more groups
had lower depression ratings. This supports Wittrup and Hurd's (2019) conclusion that
participating in extracurricular activities can be related to symptoms of depression
throughout a semester among minority college students in the United States. Research in

a Norwegian vocational school found a similar result: depression had a modest to

moderate link with school involvement and disengagement (Garvik, Idsoe, & Bru, 2013).

A study conducted by Gruyal et al., (2020) aimed to determine the effect of

engagement in extracurricular activity on the academic stress of medical students at a
university. A sample of 677 was randomly selected to fill a self-administered
questionnaire that measures their academic stress subscale of the Student Stress
Inventory Questionnaire (SSIQ) and includes their extracurricular activities. The study
revealed that the students who did not participate in any curricular activities are more
likely to experience academic stress. It also indicates that the medical student’s coping
mechanism when experiencing stress is participation in extracurricular activities.

Velasco (2019) studied burnout among millennial Filipino university students. He

found out that feelings of exhaustion and cynicism are fueled by academic workload but if
students perceive that their grades are going to the positive side the feeling of exhaustion
lessens. However, if students only focused on their academic performance they are
limiting their experience of university education specifically when they are neglecting
extracurricular activities (Velasco 2019). He suggested that distractions such as active
participation in extracurricular activities and socializing could help students to buffer the
feeling of burnout.

III. PROJECT METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes the presentation of the project design and materials that will
be used in the study as well as the processes to be used in gathering the data.
Furthermore, it also presents how the data is being analyzed and interpreted using
statistics. All of these were represented to serve as a basis for the researchers in
formulating the appropriate project design based on the problem.

A. Data to be Collected

The researchers will utilize and gather data coming from First year psychology
students. The data to be collected is subjected to the responses of the said group of
premises and will be used by the researchers to successfully conduct the project
proposal. Hence, academic stress, and extracurricular activity were the main data
proponents of this project proposal. The literature review will also be considered in
the data collection with the help of guidance from the project’s statement of the
problem.

B. Methods of Data Collection

The project proposal will discuss how being involved in extracurricular activities
helps to reduce academic stress and burnout of the college students of Batangas
State University. The researcher used quantitative research because the study
focuses on the link between the independent and dependent variables. Furthermore,
the study requires numerical data which will be analyzed in this research. To obtain
the results, the researcher applied mathematical tools. The data required comes from
the target population's respondents. To obtain numerical data, the researchers will
create questionnaires. Finally, quantitative research requires less time for data
collection and analysis.

C. Participants of the Study

The researcher will conduct the study for the First Year Bachelor of Science in
Psychology of the School Year 2021-2022 in JPLPC-Malvar with a population of One-
Hundred and Thirteen (113). Due to the huge population, the researchers determined
the sample size using the formula given by the National Education Association in the
United States to compute the needed sample size for the credibility of the project.
They will be asked to answer the questionnaire, and are expected to participate
actively.

Page 6 of
17

College of Arts and Sciences

The researchers arrived at Eighty-eight (88) respondents in this project. They

will use stratified random sampling to achieve accurate results since the research
study requires the insight of different categories of individuals. This holds as the
study’s proposal, if approved, will be utilized by several different members of the
university population, and necessitates the feedback of such concerned parties.
According to Crossman (2020), stratified samples can ensure that each of the different
subgroups in a certain population can be adequately represented within the study’s
whole sample population. This method is primarily deemed as effective when looking
at how studying a particular issue, trend, etc., as well as the perspectives surrounding
them, can change across different subgroups.

D. Data Gathering Instruments

To support the proposed project, the researchers will make use of a data table
to gather the necessary information. It would also utilize books, research, and journals
that have primary sources and relation to the study. Furthermore, the researchers will
use a questionnaire which will serve as the study’s main instrument. The item
statements were extracted from the related studies, concepts, and ideas accumulated.
The questionnaire aims to gather the academic stress and burnout levels of first-year
BS Psychology students and also the Extracurricular Activities that lessen their
academic stress and burnout levels.

Construction of Questionnaire.

The research questionnaire will consist of three (3) parts. The first part of the
questionnaire will gather the demographic of the participants specifically if they
participate in Extracurricular Activities. The second part of the questionnaire will
include Ten (10) negative statements regarding academic stress. The value mark
given for each choice is 1 for ‘Never’, 2 for ‘Somewhat Frequent’, 3 for ‘Frequent’,
and 4 for ‘Always’. The last part of the questionnaire will determine if there are
changes in the academic stress levels of the respondents if they participate in
extracurricular activities.

Validation of the Instrument.

The researchers will use questionnaires as their research instrument as they
could be used to ask a constant set of questions that can be fixed if problems occur
after running through a test-retest (''Research Methods: Questionnaires'', 2020). To
accurately measure the levels of stress among the respondents, the researchers will
use the Student Stress Inventory (SSI) which was approved and given an 82.2% of
validity value and 84.2% reliability value.

Administration of Questionnaires
After checking the Validity of the research questionnaire the respondents will
be randomly selected. The respondents will be informed about confidentiality and will
be given an option to participate voluntarily and an option of non-participation. The
students who will voluntarily participate will be given a questionnaire that they can
answer in their vacant time.

E. Data Gathering Procedures

The group of researchers will follow certain procedures in the conduct of this
study. The researchers will be randomly selecting freshmen psychology students
who are willing to participate in the study. The researchers will give a briefing about
confidentiality and the background of the study before administering the
questionnaire. The researchers will distribute an extra amount of questionnaires that
will exceed their sample size to maximize the response rate. The questionnaires will

Page 8 of
17

be given to the respondents in their free time to avoid interfering with their classes.

F. Method of Analyses

The data gathered by the researchers from the questionnaire will be

statistically analyzed to draw meaningful research conclusions. This research type
includes the recruitment of individuals and analysis of data. The researchers applied
different methods and procedures to clarify and anatomize the data gathered from
the questionnaires and interpret it. The researchers will use the following:

1. Percentage. The data will be analyzed using the percentage frequency

distribution. It will specify the number of observations for each data point in
percentage form. It's a great way to express the relative frequency of questionnaire
responses and other data. Moreover, using this will determine the demographic
profile of the respondents.

2. Chi-Square of Independence. The statistical measure that will be used to

thoroughly evaluate the findings is the Chi-Square of Independence. Using this will
determine if there is a significant relationship between the involvement of students in
Extracurricular activities and the reduction of Academic Stress and Burnout. McHugh
M. (2013) claims that the chi-square of independence is an effective statistic that
allows researchers to test hypotheses about nominally measured variables.
