Acceleration Calculations
A Formula One circuit is split into three parts called sectors. The time it takes each driver to complete
each sector is recorded.

The table below shows the fastest sector times for Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in
the qualifying session for the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.

1. Complete the final column of the table by calculating the average speed of both drivers in each
sector. Use the equation:

average speed (m/s) = distance travelled (m) ÷ time taken (s)

Write the values to four significant figures.

Driver Sector Sector Length (m) Sector Time (s) Average Speed (m/s)

1 1725 29.12

Charles Leclerc 2 2334 38.70

3 1353 22.71

1 1725 29.04

Carlos Sainz 2 2334 38.84

3 1353 22.71

At the start of their qualifying lap, both drivers were stationary.

2. What was their speed at this point?

Tick one box only.

0m/s2
10m/s
10m/s2

Speed is a scalar quantity. Velocity is the vector quantity of speed.

3. Which of the following statements about velocity and speed are true?
Tick two boxes.

Speed has a direction and a magnitude.

Speed has a magnitude only.
Velocity has a direction and a magnitude.
Velocity has a magnitude only.

When signalled to begin the lap, the cars accelerate rapidly. Acceleration is the change in velocity of
an object over time. It can be calculated using the equation:

acceleration (m/s2) = change in velocity (m/s) ÷ time taken (s)

Use this equation to help you answer the following questions.

4. Calculate the acceleration of Charles Leclerc when his velocity changed by 2m/s in 10s.

 m/s2

5. Calculate the acceleration of Carlos Sainz when his velocity changed by 27.9m/s in 9s.

 m/s2

6. Calculate the acceleration of Charles Leclerc when his velocity changed by 18.3m/s in 6s.

 m/s2

The change in velocity can be calculated by subtracting the final velocity from the initial velocity.

7. Complete the sentences using the words in the box below.

accelerating decelerating positive negative steady speed zero

a) When the change in velocity is a positive value, the object is . Its acceleration
will have a value.

b) When the change in velocity is a negative value, the object is . Its acceleration
will have a value.

c) When the change in velocity is zero, the object is travelling at a . Its

acceleration will be .

Use the information from the table in question one to help you answer the following questions.

8. Carlos Sainz qualified for the race with the fastest average speed in sector one.

a) State his change in velocity between the end of sector one and the start of the race.

 m/s

b) Calculate his average acceleration over the first sector. Give your answer to three significant
figures.

 m/s2

9. Charles Leclerc qualified for the race with the fastest average speed in sector two.

a) Calculate his average change in velocity between sectors one and two.

 m/s2

b) Calculate his average acceleration over the second sector. Give your answer to three
significant figures.

 m/s2

10. Charles Leclerc’s average speed decreased during sector three.

Calculate his acceleration during sector three. Give your answer to three significant figures.
