Reading: Paraphrase a Text and Find the Main

Idea
Practice

Informational texts are often filled with new ideas and terms. When you read such
texts, it is helpful to preview the text to find the main idea. It is also helpful to
paraphrase the text after reading, restating the main ideas in your own words. This
last step ensures that you will remember what you have read. Here are some things to
do to help you find a text’s main idea and paraphrase its meaning:

• Before reading, preview the text. Look at the heads, topic sentences, and graphics
for clues to the main idea.
• As you read, take a few notes about the text’s important points.
• After you read, paraphrase the text, putting the main ideas into your own words.

Preview the following informational text and answer the first question. Then, read
the text and answer the second question.

1. What information did you find about the text’s main idea when you previewed?

Lincoln's second inaugural address, delivered on March 4, 1865, reflects on the ongoing

Civil War. In the speech, he acknowledges the war's magnitude and its unexpected duration,

emphasizing the shared responsibility for the conflict between the North and the South.

Lincoln suggests that slavery, a powerful interest in the Southern states, was a primary cause

of the war. He expresses hope for a just and lasting peace, urging reconciliation and healing

for the nation. The speech is marked by its tone of forgiveness and a commitment to move

forward, even in the face of the significant challenges posed by the war.

Dominance Behavior Among Dogs

Domestic dogs exhibit many of the same behaviors as dogs in the wild, so it is vital
for the dog trainer to understand the behavior of the species. Dogs in the wild live in
packs, and their relationship to one another is understood by all of the pack members.
The alpha dog is the pack leader, and he determines who eats first, among other
things. He also nips or growls at dogs that misbehave or challenge his dominance.
2. Paraphrase the text, putting its main points into your own words.

Domestic dogs share similar behaviors with their wild counterparts, making it crucial for

dog trainers to comprehend the species' behavior. In the wild, dogs form packs where the

dynamics are clear to all members. The alpha dog serves as the leader, deciding on priorities

like who gets to eat first. Additionally, the alpha dog uses cues like nipping or growling to

correct misbehavior or challenges to its dominance. Understanding these natural behaviors is

essential for effective dog training.

The headlines in the case study suggest that it focuses on careers in dog training,

Case Study: Careers in Dog Training

Want to combine your love of dogs with your career?
Dogs are more popular today than ever before. People are busier today than ever
before. Busy people often think a dog will be “no trouble,” but there is more to owning a
dog than petting it and taking it for an occasional run. In short, the need for dog trainers
has never been greater.
What It Takes: Preparation
Dog trainers need to learn about dog behavior, about what dogs need, and about
how they behave in the wild. Understanding the true nature of dogs helps trainers adapt
their methods to the needs of each dog.
Prospective dog trainers also need to work with professionals to learn the “tricks of
the trade.” They must learn how to assess dog-owner relationships, find solutions to
problem behavior, and be firm with both dogs and owners.
Getting a Job
New trainers should start with puppies, progressing to problem dogs once they gain
experience and confidence. Great skill is required, for example, to retrain dogs that bite.
Rewards
The rewards of professional dog training are great, but so are the heartaches. New
trainers must avoid becoming emotionally involved with their clients so they can

approach problems clearly. However, nothing beats the happy wags and warmth of a
successful dog-owner relationship.
