The Challenges of Homework

Homework is an essential part of the learning process, but it can also be a source of frustration and

homework with extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, and family responsibilities, leaving little
time for rest and relaxation.

Additionally, not all students have access to the resources and support they need to complete their
homework effectively. This can be due to a lack of understanding of the subject matter, language
barriers, or other personal challenges that make it difficult to focus on schoolwork.

It's Monday, but I am happy to report that I am home this week enjoying my fall break. In addition,
my comment library is constantly growing as I find new resources and see different things happen in
students' writing. As I entered the technology age (or rather, as my classroom entered the technology
age.I was already there.), I had the students show where they were in the writing process using a
template on our interactive whiteboard. I love seeing pictures of what all of my teacher friends are
up to each week, and in the spirit of getting back to my blog--let's do this. Fellow bloggers are

Since I set this up at the end of last year, all I needed to do was empty out the assignments I gave to
last year's class so that I can start fresh this year. 4. Create a class on Class Dojo. Now, I will never
use anything else. (And when my district eventually insists that I have a FirstClass website, I might
humor them by making a Home page on FirstClass that links to my Google site.). Google Sites are
very user-friendly, easy to edit, and they have a lot of features that I haven't seen matched by any
other site -- particularly for those of us who are not great with coding HTML. Virtually every test
(except math) was done through Edmodo. I've raved about QR codes multiple times in the past, but
this week I did something that I loved with a QR code, so I have to share it. It looks and feels a lot
like Facebook but without all of the potential problems Facebook could create -- especially for very
young users. I must say, however, that once again, technology makes this process SO much easier. It
means that we start school at the beginning of August (teachers report in July!), so we have a short
summer. I could track word counts and changes, and I could even see if she had worked on it at
home (where the big changes seemed to happen). I can hand the students their ring and cover, and
they can change it out themselves and hang it back up when they're done. Before, you could only
give or take away a single point at a time. This includes writing, photographs, images, and
downloads. I decided to use the Booksource Classroom Organizer tool to manage my classroom
library this year, so this was really quite the overhaul -- scanning all of my books, sorting them, and
labeling them. The second way that I use the wall, however, is even more important. While my
students still can't access the links in comments through their iPads, I can let them use one of our
classroom laptops to view the particular video. By giving them this assignment, I'm giving them time
to play around with the iPad and explore the available apps while also getting a baseline writing
sample. As soon as my students saw the slide, they were off. There's no limit to how many outfits
you are sent each month, and you can alert Gwynnie Bee that you're sending something back so
they'll send you your next item. This includes writing, photographs, images, and downloads. And by
the time they got home to do it as homework, they'd forgotten what we'd spent the morning talking
about, so they were back to square one. Each student has a book bin to hold reading notebooks,
writing notebooks, and any books they're reading. I'm not sure what it's like in your district, but
there's a pretty large range of quality for classroom websites at all the places that I've ever taught. We
use a great deal of technology (no 1:1 unfortunately, but BYOD which is exciting) but I am not
totally paperless. At the end of the week, I move everything into the Archive folder, and I start over
creating the assignments for next week. As a side note, having a high quality classroom website can
help make a good first impression when the parents invariably Google you before your back-to-
school meet and greet.;-). They didn't require an Internet connection because I saved the videos
straight to the hard drives, and since they were cheap.mp3 players (.
This approach also allows me to work in pieces, too, because I never know when I'm going to get
interrupted. You can always unlock the group temporarily later on if you end up getting a new
student. This essentially creates a place for students to turn in their work. Gwynnie Bee is a clothing
subscription service that is like the Netflix for clothes. I'm still using the bulk of the resources from
my Classroom Economy Megapack, however. Reply Delete Replies Reply jivey August 10, 2013 at
7:19 PM Your classroom looks sooooo good. I am thrilled to have a class set of iPads next year.
Students were watching the videos at home on their own. Fellow bloggers are always welcome to

obvious concept for one kid may take multiple explanations for another. The solution came for me
this year when Class Dojo allowed for the creation of weighted point values. Nothing can be

a small indulgence that makes me feel extra pampered. I narrowed my list of possible schools to
apply to from that information alone, and I know from talking to other teachers recently hired in my
school, they did the same. I am anxiously awaiting my package from NASA today. It took me over a
week of tinkering and writing, but my Classroom Economy Megapack is now available in my
Teachers Pay Teachers store. I can't wait to read more this year!:) Reply Delete Replies Reply Add

to math. Fellow bloggers are always welcome to link up, but please do not share any of the content

just your traditional page that could include text and links to other subpages. I'd love to hear about
how you're using it for book chats -- I'm really just getting started with Edmodo still. For questions

life balance, but as I've been increasingly pressed for time this past year, I've learned to prioritize and
find shortcuts so that I can still feel pampered despite feeling crunched. For questions about this

maximum at the beginning of my math block to do anything whole group. Alison Delete Replies

assignments. For me, my classroom website serves 3 important purposes. And usually, I destroy my
nails taking them off, too, because I'm impatient.
I then created a QR code for that page, and embedded it in a slide on a flipchart. When I went to
ISTE this summer, I learned about Kaizena, a tool that integrates with Google Drive and allows you
to give feedback in a variety of ways. It's pretty easy. 4. Once all of your students have joined the
group, lock your group. It's great to use for sponge activities and review. Here's a short (1 minute)
introductory video from Google that overviews Google Sites. They could all work at their own pace,
and they came to class more confident and prepared for practice the following day. Plus my nails
always look good now.:-) If you'd like to try a free sample, you can fill out my form at. Needing - I

I've done a great job. Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest. I've downloaded the

Hey Alison, I started making my Evernote notebooks the other day and have integrated Kustomnote
as well. If you're writer then you have no need to write your book with the ink pen in your hands.
Once I've made the video, I need to upload it to a platform for students to view. It will be a separate
blog as I doubt my classmates in other programs will really want to read about Eberopolis, but I'll
share a link here if you're interested in following or learning more. Nothing can be reposted from this

When you look at the Navigation side bar on my website, you can see several subpages listed. I
cherish these days of hugs and laughter together. In addition, my comment library is constantly

directions most of the time; students get the wrong idea about authentic writing. The math drawer
contains their math journals, any manipulatives they may need, and any math work-in-progress. It
lets me pass out some materials in advance -- I can put math manipulatives for the day in each team's
drawer, for example, before we get to the lesson. Nothing can be reposted from this site (excluding

attempt to go paperless from day 1. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the front side, and carefully
place the Writing Process cutouts so that there is one on each cake circle. I'm constantly adding links
to new resources I find or reorganizing it to better suit my class and my instructional needs. Usually
when I change them out, it's because I want a new pattern and not because the wraps are coming off.
It's all part of my master plan to delegate as much as possible so I can focus on the important stuff.
It's still a mini-lesson, after all, and if I go any longer than that, my students will tune out. I include a
link to the video I've created in my sub plans, and I have the sub watch the video with the class again
to start the lesson. The solution came for me this year when Class Dojo allowed for the creation of
weighted point values. I'm hosting a Jamberry open house tomorrow for my friends who want to try
Jamberry. I read the book quickly as I started to flip, but I think there are more ideas to be pulled
from it. Students can borrow and take home two books at a time, and they sign out their books in
library checkout folder. There's no limit to how many outfits you are sent each month, and you can
alert Gwynnie Bee that you're sending something back so they'll send you your next item. I'd love to
hear your thoughts about it in the comments section. It's a rare moment when the TV is off, the dogs
are asleep, and all is quiet in the house. I did this pretty consistently for the second half of the year,
and I couldn't be happier with the results. I'm so glad that I did--it's been a lot of fun, and it has
helped push me out of my comfort zone. Fellow bloggers are always welcome to link up, but please

things might be a little different, but I always like seeing other's ideas. I've heard that an iPad app is
in the works, but until then, I'm having to devise my own alternatives. Fellow bloggers are always

the two carts (one on each side of the room), I have 24 drawers. I write all of the homework
assignments for the day or week below. From this angle, you can also see my filing cabinet, my
second storage cabinet, my student mailboxes, and my other rolling table. This is true especially
when everything gets busy and chaotic between work and grad school and caring for my family. It
makes me feel festive without going over the top. Next, I used Command hooks to hang all of the
students' cover pages. There are some teachers who update their websites regularly, and then there
are others who work on their website for the couple hours devoted to staff website development on a
professional learning day, and then never go back. It will be a separate blog as I doubt my classmates

students tend to stagger their completion. I've never been great with the work-life balance, but as
I've been increasingly pressed for time this past year, I've learned to prioritize and find shortcuts so

In the weeks ahead, I plan to share more about the tools I use to create flipped lessons and some
troubleshooting tips for problems that might come up. Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to

with my kids while I'm gone.
Once I've made the video, I need to upload it to a platform for students to view. I didn't make as
many videos as I'd wanted to last year, but I'm grateful for the ones I already have done because
that's less work I'll have to do this year. My system has evolved a lot in the last 5 years, and I've
finally taken the time to put it all together in a format that can be shared with others. I'm trying to do
Daily 5 and CAFE this year, and I came across the very cute CAFE letters from Terri over at the
Creative Apple. (I think she's updated them since then, but I'm not quite ready to return to my printer
and laminator just yet!) I also finally hung up my cursive letters from Ladybug's Teacher Files. I also
made something new that I'm trying out this year for exit tickets, but I'll share more about that in a
future post. Use the link at the top right of this page (under Never Miss a Post) to subscribe to my
mailing list. Not to mention, manicures never hold up on my nails. Hi bloggy friends! I know it's
been forever since I've updated this blog, and trust me -- lots of ideas are percolating in the hopper
about my flipped(!) fourth grade classroom and other things I've tried this year. Those used to be
drawers for students to store their many notebooks and folders. This year, I will be on maternity
leave for 12 weeks, so I'm nervous about what will happen with my kids while I'm gone. One
possibility might be some of the grammar, vocabulary, and word study components of my ELA
block. I still have some Jamberry samples available to mail out, so if you'd like to try Jamberry nail
wraps for yourself, I'd love to share. Last year, it was flat against the wall, but this year, I built it as a
little nook inside our classroom. I was shocked beyond words when I was named Teacher of the Year
at a faculty meeting last week, and my dear friends went out of their way to make me a crown, a
tutu, and a sash for the local homecoming parade last week. My comment library allows me to give
more thorough feedback in much more depth. I look forward to learning and sharing with you during
the year. The rest of my math block was then spent working with small groups, conferring with kids,
and getting into richer practice and problem solving than I could ever fit in before. I could usually
tackle this in a couple of hours each week, and it was much less stressful than trying to film every
day. Perhaps it would be good to use if you were organizing a field trip or something like that. Once
the daily folders are set up within the Student Assignments folder, I can share all of the folders
through a link on my class website, and students can easily access everything they'll need for daily
assignments. I've never been great with the work-life balance, but as I've been increasingly pressed
for time this past year, I've learned to prioritize and find shortcuts so that I can still feel pampered
despite feeling crunched. Nothing can be reposted from this site (excluding the button features)

so I decided to change my system this year. Nothing can be reposted from this site (excluding the

December 3, 2012 at 4:31 PM Thanks for your comment. I love my Gwynnie Bee subscription for a
variety of reasons. By the time I felt confident they could try some problems on their own, we hardly
had any time left. I love getting my nails done, but I lack the time and budget to do that with any
regularity. It will be a separate blog as I doubt my classmates in other programs will really want to
read about Eberopolis, but I'll share a link here if you're interested in following or learning more. I've
been doing Weight Watchers, and losing weight has been easy when I've taken the time to plan what
I'm going to eat and track what I eat throughout the day.
As some of you may know, I'm working on my PhD in addition to teaching fourth grade full-time.
And while you're there, you might want to check out my Colorful Class Schedule Cards that I'll be
using this year. (I report back in a little over a month, y'all. I know that reading other teachers' blogs
has been hugely inspiring for me as a teacher, and I can't imagine what I would do if I didn't have
access to so many great teaching minds across the globe. Next week, I'll share more about what my
math block looks like under the flipped model. In addition to a personal business card that I give to
parents with all of my contact information, I've created a couple other business cards this year.
Sometimes the lessons are a bit more hands-on (e.g., using a protractor), and I want to show students
some examples. Last year, the bins were on the floor, and I hated it, so I decided to splurge on a shelf
from Ikea. Most of my students had Internet access at home to watch the videos, but a couple didn't.
Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest. I love working with small groups or one-on-
one with students. Invariably some kids don't pay attention or don't really check their work, and then
it's just lots of time lost. Nothing can be reposted from this site (excluding the button features)
without written permission from the author. I'm hosting a Jamberry open house tomorrow for my
friends who want to try Jamberry. While I always tried to keep my in-class mini-lessons short, there
were days when they would drag on because some kids just weren't getting it. This will be the first
year that I use the flipped model for the whole year, so I will need to prepare more video lessons and
give some thought to how I'll transition my students (and their parents) toward this model. I gained a
bit when I had my daughter, and then I packed on a few more pounds when I started working on my
PhD last year. I start classes for my doctoral program on Monday, so I don't know how often I'll get
to blog this year, but I promise not to drop off the face of the blogosphere anytime soon. I'll be using
that back table to meet with small groups this year. I've heard that an iPad app is in the works, but
until then, I'm having to devise my own alternatives. There are several classroom printables, posters,
rewards certificates, and student and teacher-forms in the packet as well. I could usually tackle this
in a couple of hours each week, and it was much less stressful than trying to film every day. So if
you're thinking about setting up a classroom economy this year, please consider checking it out. This
includes writing, photographs, images, and downloads. I adore lesson planning and coming up with
creative ways to get my students to master concepts. Then once all of the slides are in place, I'll
record the audio over them. And like so many of my projects, what I thought would take me 1-2
days of work this summer ended up being closer to 5, so that really ate up a sizable chunk of my pre-
planning. I promise not to spam you or share your contact information ever. I narrowed my list of
possible schools to apply to from that information alone, and I know from talking to other teachers
recently hired in my school, they did the same. The short version is that I'm going to study how
reading and writing about classroom practices through blogging affects teachers' feelings of
effectiveness in the classroom (self-efficacy beliefs). Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to
