Water Pollution
Water can be found on the continents in lakes, rivers, and steams. There is
even water under your feet, deep down below the ground you stand on. It is
called groundwater. Groundwater is rainwater that seeps and collects
underground after it rains. If you think water is not so important, try going one
day without drinking any water at all. It's not easy, is it?

Water is very important to every living thing on the earth. All living things
need fresh, clean water. All plants, animals, and people need clean water to drink.
When you look at a model or picture of our planet, you can't help but notice it's
mostly water. It seems that with so much water all around us, we could never run
out. Unfortunately, most of the water on the earth is not usable. It's mostly
saltwater and you can't drink it. Only one ten thousandth (0.00001) of all water
on the earth is fresh water. Even a smaller amount is drinkable because people
keep putting trash, wastes, and harmful chemicals into water.

If water is so important to us, why don't we take good care of water? We

dump garbage, sewage, and medical wastes into water. Industries drain poisonous
chemicals into it, and we pour harmful liquids onto the ground to seep into
groundwater. Every time you wash dishes or clothes, or take a shower, you are
sending liters of waste water down the drain. That water is no longer usable until
the chemicals and wastes are removed from it and it is treated to kill germs.

Other sources of water pollution can cause even more problems.

Whenever it rains or snows, water runs off roofs, streets, parking lots, yards,

1
and farms, picking up many toxic substances. Toxic substances are poisonous
materials that can harm plants, animals, and people. The fertilizer a farmer
spreads in his fields can be a toxic substance if it enters our water supply.
Industries are another source of water pollution. Factories can spill or dump
thousands of liters of dangerous materials into streams, rivers, and reservoirs.
Reservoirs are structures used to hold water for future use. This type of
pollution is difficult to remove from the water.

To save the water we have, we should stop treating it so badly. We

should clean it up.
