Lesson Plan in Science and Health V

I. OBJECTIVES

Identify the bad effects of certain changes in the environment.

Describe the causes and effects of these certain changes in the
environment.
Demonstrate ways how to prevent or reduce the effects of these
environmental changes.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Causes, Effects and Prevention of Certain Changes in the Environment

B. References: Basic Education Curriculum IV:4.2:19

Science for Daily Use Teachers Manual pp. 67-69
Science Spectrum 5 pp. 168-173

C. Materials: Game board, dice, activity sheets, video clips, charts and
pantomime strips

D. Science Ideas:
Everything in the environment is changing due to different chemical
reactions and changes.
Some of the ill effects of the environmental change that affect people,
plants and animals negatively are global warming, acid rain, and ozone
layer depletion.
Global warming is the increase in the temperature of the surface and lower
atmosphere of the earth caused by greenhouse effect.
The major effect of global warming is the melting of ice in the polar
region that leads to the rising of the ocean and sea level.
Acid rain is brought about by burning tremendous quantities of fossil
fuels, such as petroleum and coal. This process releases millions of metric
tons of Sulfur dioxide and Nitrogen dioxide into the air. These compounds
undergo chemical changes and produce acid.
Some of the harmful effects of acid rain are corrosion of metals, allergies
on the human body, damages on the leaves of the plants, and decrease on
the fertility of the soil.
Ozone layer depletion is the damage of ozone layer which is beyond repair
due to the excessive use of CFC’s or chlorofluorocarbons.
The ozone hole allows more harmful ultraviolet rays to reach the earth’s
surface which weakens the human immune system. It also causes cataract
and skin cancer. It causes crop damage, livestock, marine life diseases and
plankton destruction in the sea.

E. Method of Teaching:

F. Value Focus
Concern for the environment.
III. LEARNING PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activities Pupil’s Activities

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer  Officer of the day: I am requesting

everyone to please stand up for our
opening prayer.

2. Greetings  Pupils: Good afternoon! It is our

great honor to be with you all
today. Good morning too,
classmates.
 Officer of the day: You may now
take your seat.
 Pupils: Thank you Carmela.

3. Checking of attendance  Officer of the day: Miss

Secretariat, can you please inform
us of today’s attendance.
 Secretariat: It’s my pleasure to
inform you that we are all present
today.
 Officer of the day: That’s good to
hear! Thank you!

4. Defining the word for the day  (Officer of the day): Our word for
today is pollution. Who would like
to define it?
 (Pupil): Pollution is the release of
harmful substances which destroy
the environment.
 (Officer of the day): Very well
said! Please use it in the sentence.
 (Pupil): Pollution is harmful to our
health.
 (Officer of the day): Excellent
answer! Thank you, classmates, for
your active participation. That is
all for this morning. This is
Carmela Pascua, the officer of the
day.
 Outstanding performance
Carmela! A peaceful
afternoon to everyone! I am
glad that you are all here
today.

5. Setting of class standard

 Be reminded of our three
class rules:(The teacher will
raise the flashcards)
Rule 1:  Listen!
Rule 2:  Focus!
Rule 3:  Participate!
6. Review
 Anything in this world
undergoes change. For
example:
 (The teacher burns a piece of
paper)
Asked: Is the black  No, it has turned into ashes. It
material still a paper? underwent chemical change.
Why?

 (The teacher cuts a piece of

chalk).
Asked: Was there a
change that happened to
this chalk? What type of  Yes, the size of the chalk changed.
change is this? It showed physical change.

7. Checking of Assignment
 Did you look for a copy of
the lyrics of the song
“Masdan Mo ang
Kapaligiran” and familiarize
yourself with its tune?  Yes, we did.
(Please refer to Teacher’s
Resource Sheet No. 1
“Masdan mo ang
Kapaligiran”).

B. Lesson Proper

1. Motivation
 Let us now sing the song.
While singing, try to imagine
or reflect on the different
happenings in our
surroundings.  (The teacher and the pupils will
sing the song altogether).
 What does the song try to
say?  It tells us that the world has
changed, and that the environment
is dirty.
 Where do these pollutants
come from? What are its
effects on the surroundings?
Do we have ways to prevent
them? We will be able to
answer these questions after
doing all the activities for
this afternoon.

2. Presentation
 Children, be guided by the
three objectives which I
posted in that corner.  Identify the bad effects of certain
changes in the environment.
 Describe the causes and effects of
these certain changes in the
environment.
 Demonstrate ways how to
prevent/reduce the effects of these
environmental changes.
3. Pre-activity
 This afternoon, we will be
witnessing video clip
presentations, and which will
be followed by a game, “The
Ladder of Sources and
Prevention”.
 As you watch the video clips,
take note of who are these
awful pollutants, where do
they come from and what are
its ill effects to the
environment.
 Are you ready?
 (Show rules 1 and 2)
 (Actual video presentation)

4. Activity Proper
 (After the video clip
presentation, asked):
a. What are the ill or bad
effects of these changes in  The environmental changes
the environment? mentioned in the video clip were:
1. Acid rain
2. Ozone layer depletion
3. Global warming
b. What are the pollutants
that cause each of these
changes? Where does it
come from?  The air pollutants that cause acid
rain are Sulfur and Nitrogen
oxides; chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)
for ozone layer depletion and
Carbon dioxides and methane for
global warming.
(Teacher’s follow-up
discussion)
 Burning tremendous
quantities of fossil fuels,
such as petroleum and coal
releases millions of metric
tons of Sulfur dioxide and
Nitrogen dioxide into the air.
These compounds undergo
chemical changes and
produce acid which makes
the rainwater acidic.

 Ozone layer depletion is the

damage of ozone layer which
is beyond repair due to the
excessive use of CFC’s or
chlorofluorocarbons. The
ozone hole allows more
harmful ultraviolet rays to
reach the earth’s surface.

 Carbon dioxide and methane

are gases that allow the rays
of the sun to enter the Earth
but the infrared radiation that
should be released into the
outer space are reflected into
the Earth. This is termed
“greenhouse effect”. This
phenomenon causes the
increase in Earth’s
temperature.

c. How these environmental

changes affect the lives of the
people, plants, other
animals, and the whole
Earth’s ecosystem?  Acid rain: death of plants and
animals, corrosion of metals
Ozone layer depletion: eye and
skin diseases, bleaching of corals
Global warming: melting of polar
 Since the Earth including all iceberg, flood
the species living here are
harmed, what can we do to
reduce or prevent the effects
of these changes?
 You can find the answer to
this question in the game
board which I prepared for
our second activity, “The
Ladder of Sources and
Prevention” (Please refer to
Pupil’s Activity Sheet No. 2
and Teacher’s Resource
Sheet No. 2).You play this
game following the snake
and ladder game mechanics.
Are you familiar with this
game?  Yes, we are!
 Three members of each
group will play. While others
are playing, observers should
take note of the pictures of
the different activities
presented in each station as
the players move forward or
backward (Please refer to
Teacher’s Resource Sheet
No. 3 for the checklist for
group participation).
 Leaders, please claim the
materials here in front.
 Are you ready? Let’s play.  (The pupils will play by group).
 (Show rules 2 and 3)
 (After the game…)
Pollutants can be products of
man-made activities or
natural phenomena.
 Asked:
a. What are the activities of
man that produce or
contribute pollutants to
the environment?  Firecracker display, use of leaded
fuel, burning trash, deforestation,
and the like.
b. What are natural
phenomena that release
great pollutants into the
atmosphere?
 Volcanic eruption, forest fire and
the like.
c. What can we do to
prevent or minimize the
bad effects of changes in
the environment?  Waste segregation, reforestation,
biking, saving fuel and electricity,
efficient use of vehicles and the
like are some of the preventive
measures.
 Do you have any
clarifications? Comments or
queries?

C. Application

 Children, let me see if you

understood the lesson. I will
give each group pantomime
strips. It could be a cause,
effect, or prevention of
environmental changes. While
a group is pantomiming, the
rest of the groups will guess
and write the activity being
performed. Every correct
answer of the group will be
given points.
 Group leader, please claim
your pantomime strip and
other materials (Please refer
to Teacher’s Resource Sheet
No. 4).
 (The pupils will be given one
minute to prepare)  Yes, we are!
 Are you ready?
 (Shown rules 2 and 3)
 Let us start with group 4.  1…2…3… Curtain!
Children, all together. . .
(Please refer to Teacher’s
Resource Sheet No. 5 for the
rubrics).
 What group got the highest
score?

D. Generalization and Valuing

 What are the causes of  Environmental changes happened
environmental changes? due to pollution brought by
modernization and
industrialization.
 It is also due to man-made
activities like kaingin, illegal
logging and improper waste
management.

 Where does these pollutants come

from?
 Are you in favor of industrialization  Yes, because it improves the
and modernization? Why? quality of life.
 No, because it also has
counterclaims like environmental
changes.

 Modernization and industrialization

are beneficial to human life. But the
same factors for human progress
may erode the moral fiber of the
society and may cause deterioration
of our natural habitat.
 Discuss preventive measures that
you can possibly do to save the
deteriorating environment.
