DATA
COMMUNICATION
Data Communication
This is the transmission and exchange of digital
information between two or more devices or
systems.
Components of Data Communication
• Sender: The device or system that
initiates the communication and
encodes the data for transmission.
WIRELESS
TRANSMISSION MEDIA
Microwaves
Microwaves are radio waves that
provide a high-speed signal
transmission. A microwave station
is an earth-based reflective dish
that contains the antenna,
transceivers and other equipment
necessary for microwave
communications.
Satellite
Communications satellite is a
space station that receives
microwave signals from an
earth-based station, amplifies
(strengthens) the signals, and
broadcasts the signals back
over a wide area to any
number of earth-based
stations.
Infrared
Infrared is a wireless transmission
medium that sends signals using
infrared light waves. Devices,
such as a mouse, printers, and
smartphones often have IrDa
ports that enables the transfer of
data from one device to another
using infrared light waves.
WIRELESS NETWORK
TECHNOLOGIES
WI-FI (Wireless Fidelity)
This is a wireless radio
technology that can be used to
send data between devices
and computers. Small LANs
can be built using only WIFI,
and the signal is good enough
to be used with shared internet
access. Some cell phones can
use WI-FI technology to access
the internet.
Hotspot
This is a public area or space where
you can access WI-FI. These may be
provided by a commercial
organization like a hotel or
restaurant. Some charge a fee for
WI-FI access, while others offer a
free service to anyone who wants to
use it.
Bluetooth
This is a radio technology
that is similar to WI-FI but
only works over short
distances, and is slower. It is
mainly used to send data
between two devices such
as a cell phone and headset,
or between a digital camera
and a laptop.
