Asifabad town is declared as a municipality by state government

As of today, March 29, 2024, Asifabad town is officially a municipality! The

state government issued a decree converting the district headquarters from a
gram panchayat to a municipality. This change brings several improvements:

● Upgraded Local Governance: Asifabad will now benefit from a more

urbanized form of local governance with a municipality structure.
● Expanded Municipality: The new municipality incorporates Jhankapur
and Godavelly gram panchayats, forming Asifabad municipality with 20
wards.

● Interim Leadership: To ensure a smooth transition, the Kagaznagar

municipal commissioner will act as the interim commissioner for
Asifabad.

C
This change holds significance because Asifabad was the only district
headquarters functioning as a gram panchayat since the division of the

PS
erstwhile Adilabad district in 2016. A municipality typically has a larger budget
and more resources to address the needs of a growing urban center.

Telangana's GIS Hub Initiative: Ushering in a New Era of Urban Planning

Rapid Urbanisation in Telangana:

● Since 2014, Telangana has witnessed a surge in urbanization with the

ET
notification of 73 new Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and 7 Urban
Development Authorities (UDAs).
● This rapid growth highlights the growing importance of robust urban
planning for Telangana's future.
G

● With 143 ULBs and 11 UDAs having a population of over 1.83 crore (i.e.)
48.5%, Telangana has urban infrastructure of gigantic magnitude.
R

Occupying less than 4% of geographical area of the state, urban

comprises 46% of its population while contributing to 66% of state’s
economy.
TA

Limitations of Existing Urban Planning Methods:

● Current GIS-based Master Plan Maps primarily focus on land-use zones,

existing land use, circulation plans, and utilities plans.
● Newer urban concepts and planning requirements necessitate
incorporating more comprehensive data sets.

The GIS Hub Solution:

● The Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) is

establishing a web-based GIS Hub within the Directorate of Town and
Country Planning (DTCP).

● This initiative falls under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme and aims to improve
urban planning through data-driven decision making.
● Telangana is 3rd state to have GIS Hub after Assam and Meghalaya

C
Objectives of the GIS Hub:

PS
● Data Quality and Consistency: The Hub will conduct quality checks on
existing geospatial data, ensuring its accuracy and consistency.
● Enhanced Urban Planning Database: Fresh data capture will be
undertaken to create a comprehensive urban planning database.

TS
● Shared Platform for Collaboration: A web-based GIS platform will be
developed for data sharing between departments and with the public
(with security measures).

Expected Benefits:
ET
● The GIS Hub will empower various departments under MAUD to make
informed decisions for scientific urban planning.
● Improved intra-departmental and inter-departmental coordination will

streamline urban development processes.

● Increased transparency and public access to data will foster greater
