PROCEDURE

BREAST SELF EXAMINATION

DEFINITION

Breast self-examination (BSE) is a screening technique performed by individuals to detect any

abnormalities or changes in their breast tissue. It involves visually inspecting and palpating
(feeling) the breasts regularly to identify any lumps, changes in texture, or other irregularities
that may indicate the presence of breast cancer or other breast health concerns.

PURPOSE

 Early Detection of Breast Abnormalities: BSE aims to enable individuals to identify any
changes in their breast tissue promptly, such as lumps, swelling, or changes in texture,
which could indicate the presence of breast cancer or other breast health issues.
 Empowerment: BSE empowers individuals to take an active role in their breast health by
becoming familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts. This familiarity allows
them to detect any deviations from the norm and seek medical attention if necessary.
 Increased Awareness: Regular BSE encourages individuals to become more aware of
their bodies and any changes that may occur over time. This heightened awareness can
lead to earlier detection of abnormalities and potentially improve treatment outcomes.
 Education: BSE serves as an educational tool, providing information on breast health and
encouraging individuals to engage in proactive health behaviors. It helps raise awareness
about breast cancer risk factors, symptoms, and the importance of regular screening.
 Peace of Mind: For many individuals, performing regular BSE can offer peace of mind
knowing that they are actively monitoring their breast health and taking steps to detect
any potential issues early.
 Complementing Clinical Examinations: While BSE is not a substitute for clinical breast
exams performed by healthcare professionals or screening mammograms, it can
complement these examinations by providing individuals with an additional means of
monitoring their breast health between appointments.

ARTICLES

S.NO ARTICLES RATIONALS

1 Mirror: A handheld or wall-mounted mirror can be used to visually
inspect the breasts. The rationale for using a mirror is to
enable individuals to view their breasts from different
angles and detect any changes in size, shape, or skin
texture
2 Well-lit Room: Adequate lighting in the examination area is essential for
accurate visual inspection. Good lighting helps individuals
identify any changes in the appearance of their breasts
more effectively.

3 Pillow or Towel: Placing a pillow or folded towel under the shoulder of the
breast being examined can help provide support and
comfort during palpation. This helps individuals maintain a
relaxed position and facilitates thorough examination.
4 Fingers: The primary "equipment" used in BSE is the fingers.
Clean, dry hands are essential for palpating the breast
tissue. The rationale for using fingers is to feel for any
lumps, thickening, or changes in texture within the breast
tissue
5 Educational Materials: Brochures, videos, or online resources providing guidance
on BSE technique, breast anatomy, and signs of breast
abnormalities can be valuable tools for educating
individuals about self-examination.

6 Reminder System: Using a calendar, smartphone app, or other reminder

system can help individuals establish a regular schedule for
performing BSE. Consistency in performing self-
examinations is key to early detection.

AFTER CARE OF ARTICLES

Cleanliness: Ensure that any equipment, such as mirrors, breast models, or pillows, used during
the examination is cleaned and sanitized after each use. This helps prevent the spread of bacteria
or germs that could potentially cause infections.

Disinfection: Use appropriate cleaning agents or disinfectants to sanitize equipment thoroughly.

Follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfecting each item to ensure effectiveness
and safety.

Drying: Allow equipment to air dry completely before storing it away. Proper drying helps
prevent the growth of mold or mildew and ensures that the items remain in good condition for
future use.

Storage: Store equipment in a clean, dry, and secure location to prevent contamination or
damage. Avoid storing items in areas where they may come into contact with moisture or dirt.
Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect equipment for any signs of wear, damage, or
contamination. Replace any worn-out or damaged items promptly to maintain the effectiveness
of BSE practices.

Educational Materials: If you have educational materials, such as brochures or diagrams, used
during BSE, store them in a safe and accessible location for future reference. Consider
laminating printed materials to protect them from damage and ensure longevity.

Reminder System: Maintain a reminder system to ensure regularity in performing BSE.

Whether it's a calendar, smartphone app, or other method, continue to use reminders to stay
consistent with self-examinations.

Follow-Up: If you detect any abnormalities or changes during BSE, follow up with a healthcare
professional for further evaluation and guidance. Keep track of any findings or concerns to
discuss them during medical appointments.

CONCLUSION

After conducting BSE, individuals should follow up with healthcare professionals if they detect
any abnormalities or changes in their breasts. Regular self-examination, combined with proper
aftercare practices and timely medical evaluation, can contribute to early detection and improved
outcomes in breast health.

Overall, breast self-examination plays a vital role in breast cancer awareness and prevention
efforts. By promoting early detection and encouraging proactive health behaviors, BSE
empowers individuals to prioritize their breast health and take control of their well-being.
