(c) (i) Sketch the graph of y = |3x + 1|. 1


(ii) For what values of x is it true that:

(d) Describe carefully a pair of transformations that will transform the graph of y = x3 2

(ii) Find the quotient when P (x) is divided by x − 1. 2

(c) By considering the graph of y = (x + 1)(x − 2)(x − 3) ≥ 0, state the values of x for 2

(d) Consider the quadratic polynomial P (x) = (x + h)2 + k for some constants h and k. 2
Find the values of h and k given that x + 2 is a factor of P (x) and 16 is the remainder
when P (x) is divided by x.

(a) The polynomial P (x) is given by P (x) = x3 − mx2 + mx − 1, where m is a constant.


(i) Given that (x − 1) is a factor of P (x), find a quadratic factor of P (x). 2
(ii) Hence find the set of values of m for which all the roots of the equation P (x) = 0 2
are real.
(iii) If m = 3, the graph of y = P (x) is a simple transformation of the graph of y = x3 . 1
