1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Methodology
There were two methods that we used to complete this study which are online research
and online survey. Prior research and study on smart clotheslines aimed to forecast issues using
the automated clothesline in an actual environment, control the automatic suspension system
with an Arduino microcontroller, and construct an automated clothesline that is climate-friendly.
Next, for the online survey method, we had prepared questionnaires using Google Form then
analyzed them by using Google Spreadsheet. We also constructed a bar chart to analyze
consumer preferences. The responders were classified into different groups depending on their
age, average salary and gender. The questionnaire was divided into 2 sections. First section
consists of demographic questionnaires and the second section was about the preference of the
product and consumers’ willingness to buy the product.
1.2 Limitation
The limitation in completing this study was lack in reliable information for online
research hence having difficulty in data collection from the previous study. Next limitation was
difficulty in finding the research participants involving the age group between 50 to 59 years old.

2.0 TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION
For the new product development, there is one product that has been selected and
introduced, which is known as S.M.A.R.T Automated Clothesline. The S.M.A.R.T Automated
Clothesline is fitted with an innovative rain sensor module that allows the system to recognise
changes in the surrounding weather and to draw out individual clotheslines. In addition, this
product is to assist and help people who are busy and focused on their daily chores outside. This
innovative concept was created to keep garments from being wet from the rain. This product was
created to improve the clothesline in a better way and is able to facilitate the work of its users
who are often busy outside and do not have time to take clothes from the clothesline if the
weather changes occur, such as rain. In simple words, the automatic clothesline system's primary
purpose was to sense when it was raining and move the laundry to a covered area on its own,
without assistance from an individual.
3.1 Definition
Our product, S.M.A.R.T. Automated Clothesline was created and the abbreviation
"S.M.A.R.T." stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, and it
indicates that these concepts were taken into consideration when designing this automated
clothesline system. In addition, this product was created because there are several problems that
occur if we continue to use the existing clothesline, one of which is since customers won't always
be in their homes, it is currently difficult to anticipate when it will rain. When it rains on its own,
users who are accessible can take their clothes to a safe location. Even when the users are present
in their houses, it takes time for them to recognise the coming rain and take the necessary
precautions to store their clothes in a secure location. When it rains while they are gone from
home, the clothes will get soaked. So, the existence of an automated system that can help
individuals manage their laundry on a daily basis would be convenient.

3.2 Classification of New Product Development
This product development is classified as the modified innovation… which means this
product is the original ideas brainstormed by this group. This completely new product is a
new-to-the world product which is a new invention inspired from the ordinary clothesline.
The idea of this group was motivated by our daily life routine at home in which to do our
laundry. The reason we specify it to the home scope is due to the limited time to monitor the
clothes to be dried especially when someone is having a busy life in the working field. Therefore,
the innovation of the clothesline was inspired by the list below which consists of automatic
umbrellas, thermometer usage and the prototype created by the collaboration of certain institutes.
4
3) Prototype of Smart Automated Clothesline by the collaboration of Kolej Komuniti
Kemaman, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris
The innovation is motivated by this collaboration between several institutes. It is
considered as an advanced rain sensor module that enables individual clotheslines to
extend automatically in response to changes in the surrounding weather conditions. This
innovative project was designed to assist individuals in staying productive and
concentrating on their daily activities outdoors while ensuring their clothes remain dry
and unaffected by rain.
Based on the generated idea above, we had decided to develop a smart automated
clothesline with the following features:-
1) Time Efficiency:- Smart automated clotheslines streamline the drying process, saving
time for users. With features like automated retraction and smart scheduling, users can
optimize drying times to suit their schedules.
2) Energy Efficiency:- Many smart clotheslines incorporate energy-efficient technologies,
such as solar-powered drying or sensors that adjust drying times based on weather
conditions. This reduces reliance on traditional energy sources.
3) Space Optimization:- Smart clotheslines often come with space-saving designs, utilizing
vertical space or offering retractable options. This is particularly advantageous for those
with limited drying space.
4) Weather Adaptability:- The ability to retract or cover the clothesline in response to
unfavorable weather ensures that the drying process is not hindered by rain or excessive
humidity. This adaptability is a significant advantage over traditional clotheslines.
5) Preservation of Clothing Quality:- Smart features like adjustable drying temperatures
and humidity sensors contribute to the preservation of clothing quality. Delicate fabrics
can be dried at optimal conditions, reducing the risk of damage.
5
6) Sensor Technology:- Advanced sensors can detect the moisture levels in clothes and
adjust drying times accordingly. This not only saves energy but also ensures that clothes
are dried efficiently without overexposure to heat.
7) Customizable Features:- Users can often customize drying settings based on their
preferences and clothing types. This level of control allows for a personalized and
efficient drying experience.
6
4) Durability:- The useful life of the product is proven when it comes to the change of
weather conditions in Malaysia. The clothesline structure is designed to withstand various
weather conditions, such as rain, sun, and wind, without deteriorating. Quality finishes
and coatings can protect against corrosion, ensuring the product's longevity due to the
inconsistent weather condition.
5) Special features:- There are also a few extra characteristics featured by this product.
7
3) Illustrating and developing the visual representations of the product concept:- Make
illustrations that accompany the product concept. To help customers understand more
clearly what is proposing, this may include sketches, product representations, or even a
prototype of your S.M.A.R.T. automated clothesline.
4) Conduct the concept testing of the product:- Give the participants the concept
description and any accompanying visual aids throughout the testing session. Make sure
they are well informed about the features, advantages, and practical applications of the
product.
5) Gathering the feedback from the target customers:- Invite participants to share their
ideas, concerns, and inquiries on the SMART automated clothesline. To get feedback,
you can employ structured surveys and open-ended inquiries. Important topics to research
are:
● Perceived value: What advantages do users see with the product? In what way
does it satisfy their wants or solve their problems?
● Questions and reservations: Do participants mention any problems,
disadvantages, or reluctances?
● Pricing: Find out what they think is a reasonable price and how much they are
willing to pay for the product.
● Usability and friendliness: Find out what they think about how simple it is to
use and set up.
6) Analyzing the feedback from the target customers:- Sort through and evaluate the
comments you have been given. Examine the responses for recurring themes and trends
and determine any recurrent issues or noteworthy positives.
7) Making an improvement if needed:- Make adjustments to the SMART automated
clothesline concept based on the input that has been given by the target customers.
Respond to any worries or questions participants may have. Make any required changes
to the features, price, marketing plan, or product design.

3.3.3 Build Prototype
3.3.3.1 2D Prototype
The majority of our survey participants were female with 81% and another 19% were
male participants. For the age group, our participants mostly consisted of people who were
between 20 to 30 years old. Next, we analyzed that most of the participants’ average salary was
below RM2,000 per month.
9
From consumers’ preferences survey, we also analyzed the features that attract
participants to buy the product which are movable, foldable and user-friendly installation. They
also preferred stainless steel for the clothesline stand material and vinyl as the outer sheaths of
the clothesline.
Lastly, we also asked for additional suggestions and their willingness to buy the product.
Through this survey, we concluded that 48 from 50 participants were interested in buying the
product.
