pointing it out, but it makes sense
that it’s the mothers who showed
concern over moral corruption.

I originally thought that, in the

same spirit of highlighting the

MICHELLE SMITH
Michelle Remembers
FEMMES INFERNALES
Michelle Remembers was a book based on
therapy sessions between Michelle and her
husband, psychiatrist Lawrence Pazder. It tells
how, through hypnosis, Michelle was able to
retrieve hidden memories of her childhood,
discovering that she was abused by a
Satanic cult.

Following the book, other adults, also through

hypnotherapy, unlocked long forgotten
memories of ritualistic abuse. The process
was simple; tell your doctor about your
strange nightmares, and using vague
description of abstract imagery, they will be
able to tell you that you are, also, the star of
your very own tragic horror story.

The book explained that, as a child, Michelle

was taken and tortured by Satanists. After
years of abuse, her body was obviously
bruised and battered. and while Michelle
didn't have a single scratch on her body then,
she had a good explanation.

At the end of her book, after an epic battle

between good and evil, Jesus removes all
the scars from Michelle's body, as well as
take away the horrid memories from her
mind, so she could have a normal childhood.

Michelle went on to give lectures to law

enforcements and serve as consultant on
more than 1000 cases linked to Satanism.

Michelle wasn't the only one to release a totally real book

about her experience with Satanism. Other authors went on
to explain how they used to be part of dark cults, explaining
how they for real had magic powers and could levitate, turn
invisible, and summon Satan, before turning to Christianity.

But the shared principle was that there existed a global,

secret Satanic organization. It was another type of
Satanism, reported just as factually as the three others
we've seen before. They had a name for it, too.

PAT PULLING

Out of all the conmen of the Satanic Panic, I
believe Pat Pulling was one of the few who
genuinely believed everything they said.

Her son committed suicide. He was also an

avid Dungeons & Dragons player. When
searching through his things, Pat found a note,
which explained that her son's character had
been in-game: "Your soul is mine. I choose
the time. At my command, you will reave the
land. A follower of evil, a Killer of man."

Another note explained that he had been

summoned to kill someone, and that
unwilling to do it, he took his own life instead.

Pat never believed her son had actually been

cursed, but she thought that perhaps her son,
absorbed in the game, did. That was her
platform; D&D blurs reality and fiction, and
depressed, impressionable teenagers can be
hurt by it. That's why she created Bothered
About Dungeons & Dragons (B.A.D.D), to
raise awareness about the harm, she believed,
could be caused by the game.

Even if I disagree with her interpretation of

the facts, I can empathize with the pain she
had to live through after the death of her son.
But to this day, you'll hear people talking
about "that crazy woman that believed her
son was cursed by D&D."

He was a great killer;

He sneaked into houses,
He stole, he raped, he killed.

He was a pro.
He was on trial when they called him a Satanist.
Huh. Maybe he drew a pentacle or two, just to give a
scare, but he didn't worship the guy. But when he
realized he only had to raise two fingers to make the
crowd shiver, he decided to keep on the act.

He had a cousin who did the same things he did. A

killer and a rapist. They called him Raping Ricardo. It
wasn't as good as "Satan Salvadore", but that was on
him: the cousin never cared much for gimmicks.

Everyone wanted a piece of Satan Salvadore. The

love letters, the interviews, the book deals; handsome
actors were already fighting over who was going to
play him in the film adaptation. He had hundred of
documentaries and true crime series cover him,
whether it was hate or fascination, the people yearned
for him.

Salvadore met his cousin in jail, "Getting caught is

the fun part", he told him. But Ricardo disagreed; no
one sent him letters. He wrote a book, but every copy
was sent back with the same note; Who wants to read
about a guy named Raping Ricardo?

He tried telling himself that it's not about the fame,

that it's about the craft and yet, whenever he went to
sleep at night, you could barely hear him whisper to
himself:
"If only I had drawn one pentacle..."

In terms of moral gatekeepers, none deserves
the title more than Mary Whitehouse.
Looking like an old, mean librarian, she was
an activist who made it her mission to clean
up TV once and for all. Media needed to be
clean and inoffensive, anything with
profanities, sexual innuendos, and violence
had to go.

She was opposed to everything from

pornography to Doctor Who, and she became
an enemy of every woman in America the
moment she attempted to ban sex toys.

Gay News, an LGBT newspaper, once

published a poem about a Roman centurion
having sex with Jesus Christ. It was
blasphemous, Whitehouse claimed, and she
declared that she would personally prosecute
the publishers for their sin.

And, in 1977, she won. The publishers were

found guilty, and even though they did
campaign to abolish blasphemous libel as an
offence, they weren't able to make that
happen either, not until 2008.

And so, as well as being opposed to profanity,

premarital sex and violence, she was also
opposed to the portrayal of homosexuality on
TV. I wonder if she was still around, if she too
would complain that Netflix is shoving
homosexuality down her throat.

An important part of Whitehouse's legacy was
the Video Recordings Act 1984, which she did
not directly create, but it was passed as a result
of her campaigning

Stricter rules were put in place for films

released on home media; not all theatrical
releases could be released on VHS. These

Musicians have been accused of hiding hidden messages in

their music, specifically messages recorded in reverse through a
method called backmasking. There is something uncanny about
hearing a song backwards, especially when, late at night, you feel
as if you can hear voices, words... Scary stuff.
While there are plenty of examples of real backmasked
messages, most are myths surrounding reversed audio clips that
vaguely sounds like words, like the Satanic message in Stairway to
Heaven, "Here's to my sweet Satan."
But out of the real ones, many are simply a response to the
rumors, and direct criticism of the PMRC and accusations of
Satanism.

In 1987, a psychotherapist published a list of symptoms

that were identified in children abused by Satanists. The
symptoms were vague, subjective, and relatively common.
That list was used by actual mental health professional even
though none of it was back by scientifically evidence.

TV special; It didn't start it, far from it, although it did push
it back into the limelight. What it does is capture the
essence of the panic at the time, and it goes like this.

Look at these serial killers, drawing pentacles.

I hope you can tell the difference now, but to the viewers of
Geraldo's show, it was pitched to them as one big thing. All
of these people are Satanists, millions of people, from
Charles Manson to your nephew who loves Metallica, they
are all the same. When you put it this way, it does seem a
lot worse.

People were afraid; sex and violence was everywhere, at

the cinema, on TV and on the radio, ad children were being
