One of the most famous works of art in the world is Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
Nearly everyone who goes to see the original will already be familiar with it from
reproductions, but they accept that fine art is more rewardingly viewed in its original
form. However, if Mona Lisa was a famous novel, few people would bother to go to a
museum to read the writer’s actual manuscript rather than a printed reproduction. This
might be explained by the fact that the novel has evolved precisely because of techno-
logical developments that made it possible to print out huge numbers of texts, whereas
oil paintings have always been produced as unique objects. In addition, it could be
argued that the practice of interpreting or ‘reading’ each medium follows different
conventions. With novels, the reader attends mainly to the meaning of words rather
than the way they are printed on the page, whereas the ‘reader’ of a painting must
attend just as closely to the material form of marks and shapes in the picture as to any
ideas they may signify.

The most famous pyramid is the Great Pyramid of Giza which is actually
only one of over a hundred surviving pyramids. There is a long-standing
question about how the pyramids were built given the lack of technology
over 4,000 years ago but scientists are piecing together the puzzle. The
blocks which make up the pyramids were hewn from quarries and then
transported to the pyramids for construction. This was an incredible feat
considering the distance that the raw materials had to travel and their
enormous weight. The transportation of the materials was either by river
using a boat or by land using a wooden sledge. Given the softness of the
ground, the wheel would have been of little use had it been invented at that
time. It is believed that the sand in front of the sledge was wet with water
in order to facilitate the movement of the sledge and reduce friction. These
sledges were pulled manually or sometimes by using beasts of burden
depending on the ease at which the sledges could move over the ground.
Interestingly, two thousand years after the pyramid building era of the
Ancient Egyptians, the Romans moved stones using similar techniques at
Baalbek. Once the blocks arrived at the pyramid construction site, it is
thought they were moved into place using a ramp and pulley system.
The Old Kingdom period in Ancient Egyptian history is also known as the
pyramid building era. The Ancient Egyptians achieved the most remarkable
feats of building work which have still not been surpassed, particularly given
the primitive technology used to build them. There is nothing remotely
mystical or magical about how the pyramids were built as is commonly
thought.

True/False/Not Given
Further still, while popular belief is that the Great Pyramid was built using
slave labour, this theory has since been debunked. The first building made in
a pyramid shape is thought to be the Stepped Pyramid which consists of six
steps placed on top of each other in a pyramid shape to create the world's
first superstructure. The credit to the superstructure finally achieving a
smooth sided pyramid goes to Imhotep, an architect commissioned by King
Sneferu. The pyramids were not an instant achievement, but the
achievement of trial and error.

A) The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by the Norwegian
explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911,
five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra
Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned safely to their base, and later
learned that Scott and his four companions had died on their return journey.
B) Amundsen's plans had focused on the Arctic and the conquest of the North Pole by
means of an extended drift in an icebound ship. He obtained the use of Fridtjof
Nansen’s polar exploration ship Fram, and undertook extensive fundraising. Prepara-
tions for this expedition were disrupted when, in 1909, the rival American explorers
Frederick Cook and Robert E. Peary each claimed to have reached the North Pole.
Amundsen then changed his plan and began to prepare for a conquest of the South
Pole; uncertain of the extent to which the public and his backers would support him,
he kept this revised objective secret. When he set out in June 1910, even most of his
crew believed they were embarking on an Arctic drift.
C) The expedition's success was widely applauded. The story of Scott's heroic failure
overshadowed its achievement in the United Kingdom, unable to accept that a
Norwegian had been the first person to set foot in the South Pole, but not in the rest
of the world. Amundsen's decision to keep his true plans secret until the last moment
was criticized by some. Recent polar historians have more fully recognized the skill
and courage of Amundsen's party; the permanent scientific base at the pole bears his
name, together with that of Scott.

Hundreds of years ago in 1785 Dutch scientist Jan Ingenhousz was studying
a strange phenomenon that he couldn’t quite make sense of. Minute
particles of coal dust were darting about on the surface of some alcohol in
his lab.
About 50 years later, in 1827, the Scottish botanist Robert Brown described
something curiously similar. He had his microscope trained on some pollen
grains. Brown noticed that some of the grains released tiny particles –
which would then move away from the pollen grain in a random jittery
dance.
At first, Brown wondered if the particles were really some sort of unknown
organism. He repeated the experiment with other substances like rock dust,
which he knew wasn’t alive, and saw the same strange motion again.

As the largest animal in the world, the blue whale also has the most fat. In a
1968 study involving 49 different species of mammal from across the US and
Brazil, researchers deduced that the blue whale had the highest percentage
of body fat – more than 35%. With the whales weighing in at up to 180 tons,
that’s easily a record-breaking amount of fat for one animal.
But if we look at things proportionally, you might be surprised by some of
the world’s full-fat species. We’ll begin with blubber, the fat rich tissue
belonging to marine mammals that has myriad benefits for streamlining,
buoyancy, defense, insulation and energy storage.
In waters further north live bowhead whales. To survive in these frosty,
remote waters they have a layer of blubber almost half a meter thick. In his
studies, Dr Craig George found blubber mass ranged from 43% to 50% of the
body mass of yearling whales.

AIR RAGE
The first recorded case of an airline passenger turning seriously violent during
a flight, a phenomenon now widely known as "air rage", happened in 1947 on
a flight from Havana to Miami. A drunk man assaulted another passenger
and bit a flight attendant. However, the man escaped punishment because it
was not then clear under whose legal control a crime

Gap Fill Tasks
committed on plane was, the country where the plane was registered or
the country where the crime was committed. In 1963, at the Tokyo
convention, it was decided that the laws of the country where the plane is
registered take precedence.
The frequency of air rage has expanded out of proportion to the growth of
air travel. Until recently few statistics were gathered about air rage, but
those that have been indicate that passengers are increasingly likely to
cause trouble or engage in violent acts. For example, in 1998 there were 266
air rage incidents out of approximately four million passengers, a 400%
increase from 1995. In the same period American Airlines showed a 200%
rise. Air travel is predicted to rise by 5% internationally by 2010 leading to
increased airport congestion. This, coupled with the flying public's increased
aggression, means that air rage may become a major issue in the coming
years.
Aside from discomfort and disruption, air rage poses some very real dangers
to flying. The most extreme of these is when out of control passengers
enter the cockpit. This has actually happened on a number of occasions, the
worst of which have resulted in the death and injury of pilots or the intruder
taking control of the plane, almost resulting in crashes. In addition, berserk
passengers sometimes attempt to open the emergency doors while in
flight, putting the whole aircraft in danger. These are extreme examples and
cases of air rage more commonly result in physical assaults on fellow
passengers and crew such as throwing objects, punching, stabbing or
scalding with hot coffee.

Write at least 150 words.
Answer:
The two maps illustrate how the village of Stokeford, situated on the east bank of the
River Stoke, changed over an 80 year period from 1930 to 2010. There was considerable
development of the settlement over these years and it was gradually transformed from a
small rural village into a largely residential area.
The most notable change is the presence of housing in 2010 on the areas that were
farmland back in 1930. New roads were constructed on this land and many residential
properties built. In response to the considerable increase in population, the primary
school was extended to around double the size of the previous building.
Whilst the post office remained as a village amenity, the two shops that can be seen to
the north-west of the school in 1930, no longer existed by 2010, having been replaced by
houses. They also used to be an extensive property standing in its own large gardens
situated to the southeast of the school. At some time between 1930 and 2010, this was
extended and converted into a retirement home. This was another significant
transformation for the village.

Describing A Diagram /Processes
Answer
The diagram explains the way in which bricks are made for the building industry. Overall,
there are seven stages in the process, beginning with the digging up of clay and
culminating in delivery.
To begin, the clay used to make the bricks is dug up from the ground by a large digger.
This clay is then placed onto a metal grid, which is used to break up the clay into smaller
pieces. A roller assists in this process. Following this, sand and water are added to the
clay, and this mixture is turned into bricks by either placing it into a mould or using a
wire cutter. Next, these bricks are placed in an oven to dry for 24 – 48 hours.
In the subsequent stage, the bricks go through a heating and cooling process. They are
heated in a kiln at a moderate and then a high temperature (ranging from 200c to
1300c), followed by a cooling process in a chamber for 2 – 3 days.

Many colleges and companies are also increasingly looking for this type of
experience. Most school leavers have the same grades and charitable works
can help set you apart from other students when making college
applications. For example, Cambridge and Oxford receive thousands of
applications from straight-A students every year and can only accept a
small percentage of applicants. What you have done outside the classroom
is often the thing that differentiates you from everyone else and gets you
that coveted spot.

Technology is being used more and more in education. Discuss the advantages and
disadvantages.
০১
Advantage/Disadvantage essay
SAMPLE ANSWER
Having access to more information and student autonomy are the principal advantages
of an increase in the use of electronic devices in education. With the internet, students
can access all the information available about any topic, regardless of what books and
other resources are available in the school. Furthermore, students have the freedom to
focus on whatever topic or subject they want and study it in depth.
A prime example of this is the number of online university courses available to students,
covering a myriad of subjects, that up until recently were unavailable to most learners.
This has resulted in more people studying third level degrees than ever before, at a pace
and schedule that suits them.
The main disadvantages associated with the increasing use of technology in education is
the dependency on this technology and the decrease in face-to-face interaction between
students. With many students now using the internet as their primary source of
information, they often struggle to use other academic resources to find what they’re
looking for.
As well as this, students spend more time looking at computer screens by themselves
than interacting with each other, and this is thought to lead to lower levels of emotional
intelligence. For instance, the recent explosion in smartphone use has been at the
expense of genuine human interaction. This results in soft skills, such as verbal communi-
cation and empathy, being
affected.

Task 2: Cause/Solution essay
Sample Question
Students are becoming more and more reliant on technology. What are some of the
problems associated with reliance on computers, and what are some of the possible
solutions?
Sample Answer
Learners are becoming ever more dependent on technology, such as the Internet and
mobile devices. This essay believes the main problems associated with dependence on
computers is the lack of original thought and copying original work from others and
suggests critical thinking classes and writing analysis software as the most viable
solutions.
The principal problems with over-reliance on technology are people not being able to
think for themselves and plagiarism. With access to so much information, students often
rely on other people’s opinions instead of forming their own. As well as this, they often
use search engines to answer a question and simply copy the text from a website, rather
than thinking about the question. This practice is not only prohibited in schools and
universities but also stunts a student’s intellectual development because they will never
০১
Task 2: Cause/Solution essay
truly think for themselves, which is what university is supposed to really be for. For
example, many teachers complain that students copy web pages straight from Wikipedia
word for word rather than giving a reasoned answer to their questions.
Solutions to these worrying problems are special classes to focus on critical thinking and
teachers using anti-plagiarism software to detect copying. If teachers create situations
where students have to infer meaning and express opinions based on a small amount of
information, this will ensure that students have an opportunity to develop these skills.
Also, if students know that their assignments are being checked for plagiarism, this will
be enough to deter them from doing so. For instance, many universities already use this
kind of software to scan course work for plagiarism and it could be extended to include
all homework, by learners in both secondary and tertiary education.
In conclusion, the main problems with overuse of technology in education are the lack of
original thought and plagiarism and these can be solved through special classes that
teach students analytical skills and the use of plagiarism detection software.

SAMPLE ANSWER
It is clear that the Internet has provided students with access to more information than
ever before. This has given learners the ability to research and learn about any subject at
the touch of a button. It is therefore agreed that technology is a very worthwhile tool for
education. Wikipedia is a prime example, where students can simply type in any keyword
and gain access to in-depth knowledge quickly and easily.
However, many disagree and feel that technology deprives people of real human
interaction. Human interaction teaches people valuable skills such as discourse, debate
and empathy. Without these soft skills, many people find it difficult to become successful
in work and their personal lives. Despite this, human interaction is still possible through
the internet and this essay disagrees technology should be dismissed for this reason. For
instance, Skype and Facebook make it possible for people to interact in ways that were
never before possible.
While the benefits of technology, particularly the internet, allow students to tap into
limitless sources of information, some still feel that people should be wary of this new
phenomena and not allow it to curb face to face interaction. However, as long as we are
careful to keep in mind the importance of human interaction in education, the education-
al benefits are clearly positive.

Task 2: Direct question essay
SAMPLE QUESTION
As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an
important element of individual wellbeing.
০১
Task 2: Direct question essay
SAMPLE ANSWER
As the majority of adults spend most of their time at work, being content with your
career is a crucial part of a person’s health and happiness. This essay will first suggest fair
pay as a key element leading to job satisfaction and it will then state that it is not very
likely that everyone can be happy with their job.
The most important thing that leads to someone being satisfied at work is being
compensated fairly. If those more senior than you respect you as a person and the job
you are doing then you feel like you are valued. A fair salary and benefits are important
marks of respect and if you feel you are being underpaid you will either resent your
bosses or look for another job. These two factors came top of a recent job satisfaction
survey conducted by Monster.com, that found that 72% of people were pleased with their
current role if their superiors regularly told them they were appreciated.
With regards to the question of happiness for all workers, I think this is and always will
be highly unlikely. The vast majority of people fail to reach their goals and end up
working in a post they don’t really care about in return for a salary. This money is just
enough to pay their living expenses which often means they are trapped in a cycle of
disenchantment. For example, The Times recently reported that 89% of office workers
would leave their jobs if they did not need the money.
In conclusion, being satisfied with your trade or profession is an important part of one’s
well-being and respect from one’s colleagues and fair pay can improve your level of
happiness, however, job satisfaction of all workers is an unrealistic prospect.
