Morning Lab News Volume 2, Issue 3

Activities from Last Week: February 14-24, 2022
Last week we discovered many new materials. We investigated how magnets attract metals, such as metal
marbles, pipe cleaners, and many more. In our dramatic play area, we explored the role of being a
veterinarian. We found different tools that veterinarians use, as well as the different animals veterinarians
take care of. On our light table, we had many different animal x-rays to investigate the skeletal system of
animals like rabbits, hedgehogs, and many others. In our block area, we built cages to hold various
dinosaurs.

Activities for This Week:

For this week we will be exploring shapes by painting with Q-tips in the art area. We will also have a grocery
store for our dramatic play area where we will explore the use of money to buy groceries. In the STEM area,
we will discover more aspects of engineering by creating designs with cups and popsicle sticks. Along with
these areas, we will have a variety of new materials in our manipulative, block, writing, light table, and
science/nature areas for everyone to investigate and explore.

The article above gives information about how you can engage children in a variety of different reading
materials. It also talks about how these materials can have an impact on how children perceive the importance of
reading and writing. Below is a list of a few of the different reading materials children can be introduced to:

• Newspapers- Newspapers are a great tool to use to find information that is going on in the world,
especially when there isn’t time to watch the news. Children can learn a lot by looking at, reading, or
listening to newspapers.

• Writing letters- Writing letters is a great way to engage children in writing. You can even ask a friend, or
relative to be a pen pal. Children can write letters to their pen pal and they can receive a letter from their
pen pals. Children can learn about the importance of mail and how we used to communicate before
technology.

• Story Books- Reading, listening, and looking at story books can help children learn life lessons through an
engaging story. They can also be great to fuel children’s imagination, vocabulary, and listening
comprehension.

Here’s a quote that we feel is inspirational for the children-

• “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places
you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
