TUTORIAL 5 (Kinetics of RBs in Plane Motion)

This document contains 6 questions about kinetics of rigid bodies in plane motion. The questions cover topics like angular acceleration and force calculations for pendulums, rotating mechanisms, disks, cylinders, wheels and pulleys. Complex diagrams and multi-step calculations are involved in determining values for acceleration, velocity, tension, reaction forces and applied moments.

KINETICS OF RIGID BODIES IN

PLANE MOTION

MEC420 (DYNAMICS)
Question 1
A pendulum is released from rest at the position
shown in Figure. The pendulum is made of a 0.5 kg
thin rod of length L = 0.6 m and a 2-kg disk of radius r
= 0.2 m. The mechanism is in vertical plane.
Determine immediately after the pendulum is
released,

(i) the angular acceleration of the pendulum, and

(ii) the force supported by the pivot at O.

Answers:
α = 10.774 rad/s2 (CW)
Ox = 9.43 N (←)
Oy = 8.20 N (↑)
Question 2
Motor at O is used to produce a moment M to rotate a
mechanism shown in Figure Q4 in the vertical plane at
an angular speed of Ω = 10 rad/s and increasing at a
rate of α = 2 rad/s2, both in the counterclockwise
directions. The mechanism consists of a 1.5-kg small
sphere which is rigidly welded to the 50-cm arm OA of
negligible mass.
(a) Draw the free-body diagram and kinetic diagram of
the mechanism. State the necessary assumptions.
(b) Determine the dynamic-force reaction at the support
O and the moment applied by the motor. Answers:
OX = 400 N (←)
OY = 201.9 N (↓)
M = 39.24 Nm
Question 3
A thin disk of mass 2 kg with a radius of 280
mm in a vertical plane is released from rest at
the position as shown in Figure where θ =
50°.
(i) Draw the free-body and kinetic diagrams
of the disk at this instant.
(ii) determine the resulting angular
acceleration of the disk and the dynamic
reaction at the pin support O immediately
after released.
Answers:
α = 17.9 rad/s2
Ox = 6.44 N (←)
Oy = 11.94 N (↑)
Question 4
The velocity of the 8-kg cylinder is 0.3 m /s at
a certain instant. What is its speed v after
dropping an additional 1.5 m? The mass of
the grooved drum is 12 kg, its centroidal
radius of gyration is k = 210 mm, and the
radius of its groove is ri = 200 mm. The
frictional moment at O is a constant 3 N∙m.

Answer:
v = 3.01 m/s
Question 5
A double wheel of mass 45 kg with inner and
outer radii of 150 mm, and 250 mm,
respectively, on the horizontal platform is pulled
by force P without slipping as shown in Figure.
The radius of gyration of the double wheel
about its mass center is 100 mm. Determine the
angular velocity of the wheel at the instant 3 s
after P of magnitude 90 N is applied for the
following conditions
(i) the wheel is initially at rest, and
(ii) the wheel is initially moving to the left at
1.2 m/s.
Answers:
ω2 = 73.8 rad/s (CW)
ω2 = 65.8 rad/s (CW)
Question 6
Figure shows the 30-kg grooved pulley is applied with
a constant force F = 80 N through a cable wrapped
around the outer radius of the pulley, causing the 20-
kg block A to move up the 30-degree incline surface.
The kinetic coefficient of friction between the block
and the incline surface is μk = 0.25. The inner radius,
outer radius, and radius of gyration of the grooved
pulley are ri = 100 mm, ro = 200 mm, and ko = 120
mm, respectively. Knowing that the system is at rest
when the force F is first applied, determine:

(i) the velocity of the block A after 2 seconds,

(ii) the tension in the cable which supports the block
A. Answers:
v = 1.959 m/s (up the incline surface),
T = 117.69 N
