Chapter 4 REFRACTION AT PLANE SURFACES

This document discusses refraction of light at plane surfaces and through prisms. It includes 15 questions about topics like critical angle, total internal reflection, minimum deviation through a prism, refractive index, speed of light in different media, and more. Calculations involving refractive index, wavelength, speed and time taken by light are also included.

10th preparation by Gaurav Singhal Sir 9897569249

1. If a monochromatic beam of light undergoes minimum deviation though an equiangular

prism, how does the beam pass through the prism, with respect to its base?

2. What is meant by (i) Critical angle. (ii) Total internal reflection.

3. A ray of light is incident normally on a plane glass slab. What will be the angle of refraction

and the angle of deviation for the ray?

4. What do you mean by absolute refractive index of a medium?

5. Write a relation between the angle of incidence (i), angle of deviation(d), for a ray of light

passing through on equilateral prism.

6. If a glass block is placed over a mark on paper, the mark seems to rise. Explain?

7. A pencil partially immersed in water in glass, appears bent. Explain with the help of a ray

diagram.

8. A prism deviates a monochromatic ray of light through an angle ‘𝛿’ when the angle of

incidence at the surface of the prism is ‘i’.

(i) Draw a graph showing the variation of ‘𝛿’ with ‘i’. On your graph show the angle of

minimum deviation.

(ii) What is the relation between the angle of incidence and the angle of emergence when

the ray suffers minimum deviation?

9. Red light of wavelength 6600 Å travelling in air gets refracted in water. If the speed of light in

air is 3×108 m/s and refractive index of water is 4/3, find:

(i) The frequency of light in air. (ii) The speed of light in water.

(iii) The wavelength of light in water.

10.A postage stamp appears raised by 7.0 mm when placed under a rectangular glass block of

refractive index 1.5. Find the thickness of the glass block.

11.The speed of light in air is 3×108 m/s. Calculate the speed of light in glass. The refractive index

of glass is 1.5.

12.A ray of light of wavelength 5400 Å suffers refraction from air to glass. Taking a𝜇g= 3/2, find

the wavelength of light in glass.

13.Can the absolute refractive index of a medium be less than one?

14.Calculate the time taken by a light ray when it passes through a glass sheet of thickness 2mm

and 𝜇 =3/2 and c = 3×108 m/s.

15.The speed of light in diamond is 125000 km/s. What is its refractive index?
