ADJUSTMENT

DISORDER
Adjustment disorder is a short-term condition
experiences an exaggerated reaction to a
stressful or traumatic event.

Stressors can be single events (like a bad


breakup) or can be multiple events (like work
problems, struggles at school, or financial
issues).
Stressors can happen to an individual, a
family, or an entire group (such as disaster
survivors).
Stressors can also be recurrent (like factors
associated with seasonal business or with
specific “milestone” events (like going to
school, getting married, or retiring).
ADJUSTMENT DISORDER

functioning and performance, and arising
in the period of adaptation to a significant
life change or to the consequences of a
stressful life event (including the presence
or possibility of serious physical illness).
Adjustment disorder is thought to affect 2 to 8% of
the general population.
It can affect anyone at any age.
It affects twice as many females as males.

This disorder usually occurs in those individuals
who are vulnerable due to poor coping skills or
personality factors.
It is assumed that the disorder would not have
arisen in the absence of the stressor(s).
The duration of the disorder is usually less than 6
months, except in the case of prolonged
depressive reaction.
SYMPTOMS
Feeling sad, hopeless or not enjoying things you used
to enjoy
Frequent crying
Worrying or feeling anxious, nervous, jittery or
stressed out
Trouble sleeping
Lack of appetite
Difficulty concentrating
Feeling overwhelmed
Difficulty functioning in daily activities
Withdrawing from social supports
Avoiding important things such as going to work or
paying bills
Suicidal thoughts or behavior

DIAGNOSIS
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)

1. Your emotional or behavioral symptoms developed within three months of


the start of the stressful event in your life.
2. Your emotional or behavioral symptoms are clinically significant. This means
that your distress must exceed what would normally be expected and/or the
distress is causing significant problems in your work, home or social life.
3. Your symptoms don’t meet the criteria for another mental disorder and are
not a flare-up or worsening of an existing mental health problem.
4. Your symptoms are not part of a normal grieving process.
5. Your symptoms don’t last more than six months after the triggering event has
ended.

Acute adjustment disorder - last less than six months.


Chronic adjustment disorder-last six months or longer.
TYPES
The DSM-5 lists six types of adjustment disorder:
1. Adjustment disorder with depressed mood: Symptoms include feelings of sadness,
hopelessness, crying and lack of joy from previous pleasurable things.
2. Adjustment disorder with anxiety: Symptoms include feeling worried, anxious and
overwhelmed. You also have trouble concentrating. Separation anxiety is a dominant
symptom in children.
3. Adjustment disorder with mixed anxiety and depressed mood: Symptoms include
feeling both anxious and depressed.
4. Adjustment disorder with disturbance of conduct: Symptoms include behavioral issues
such as acting rebellious, destructive, reckless or impulsive.
5. Adjustment disorder with mixed disturbance or emotions and conduct: Symptoms
include anxiety, depression and behavioral issues.
6. Adjustment disorder unspecified: Symptoms include physical symptoms such as
headaches, body aches, stomach aches, heart palpitations, or insomnia.
TREATMENT
Supportive psychotherapy
Talk therapy (psychotherapy)
Individual, family or group therapy
Crisis intervention is useful in some patients, by helping to quickly
resolve the stressful life situation which has led to the onset of
adjustment disorder.
Stress management training and Coping skills training.
Drug treatment may be needed in some patients for the
management of anxiety (benzodiazepines) and/or depressive
symptoms (antidepressants).
