Unit I AMPLITUDE MODULATION SYSTEMS 9

Introduction to Communication systems- Need for modulation-Amplitude Modulation,


DSBSC, SSB, VSB - Modulation index, Spectra, Power relations and Bandwidth –
Generation methods of AM, DSBSC,SSB,VSB –Detection of AM -comparison of AM
techniques, Super heterodyne Receiver

Unit II ANGLE MODULATION SYSTEMS 9

Phase Modulation - Frequency Modulation - Narrow Band FM - Wide Band FM -


Frequency Spectrum of FM – Transmission Bandwidth - Relation between FM and PM-
FM generation methods- FM detection methods-PLL as FM discriminator.

Unit III RANDOM PROCESS 9

Random variables, Central limit Theorem-Random Process, Stationary Processes,


Mean, Correlation & Covariance functions, Power Spectral Density, Ergodic Process,
Gaussian Process, Transmission of a Random Process Through a LTI filter.

Unit IV NOISE CHARACTERIZATION 9

Noise sources – Noise figure, noise temperature – Noise in cascaded systems.


Representation of Narrow band noise –In-phase and quadrature, Envelope and Phase –
Noise performance analysis in AM & FM systems – Threshold effect, Pre-emphasis and
de- emphasis for FM.
Unit V INFORMATION THEORY 9

Entropy – Discrete Memoryless channels – – Information rate - Mutual information-


Channel Capacity -Hartley – Shannon law – Source coding theorem – Huffman ,Shannon
Fano codes , LZ codes.

Total : 45 Periods
