Schools may send their entries on a spread sheet if there are more than 5 entries.

REGULATIONS:

1. Dates are final and will not be moved.

2. Closing date for entries: 2 October 2023.

3. Prepared art entries close: 10 October at 1pm.

4. Entries are done per item.

5. Minimum requirement to be an Itemwinner is 90%.

7. Should a learner participate outside of his/her item group he/she forfeits the opportunity to qualify as
Itemwinner even if he/she obtains the highest mark in that item.

8. Contestants may not enter in more than one age group or school grade group.

9. Contestants may only enter one item per section category.

10. The adjudicator’s decision will be final.

11. You will be advised after 4 October of the date & time of your entered item.

12. There will be a R10 entrance fee for spectators.

13. There will be a tuckshop available.

GRANTING OF AWARDS

1. Trophies will only be awarded to Section winners. Itemwinners receive a special certificate.

2. All Section & Itemwinners will be notified via email.

3. Section winners will perform at the Gala evening.

4. Section winners & Item winners must be present at the Gala evening, if not they will loose out on their
certificate / trophy.

POWERS OF MANAGEMENT

The Management has the right to :

1. Give a ruling which shall be final and binding on all concerned in any dispute that may arise.

2. Should any appointed adjudicator, for any reason whatsoever, not be able to judge the section to which
he/she has been appointed, management reserves the right to appoint additional adjudicators should it deem
necessary.

3. In a case where a participant is a member of the appointed adjudicator’s drama school, management reserves
the right to relieve the adjudicator of his/her duties regarding the judging of that section.

GALA EVENING

Prestige event where Section winners will perform. Price giving for Section & Item winners. VIP’s from participating
schools as well as the local media will attend. Winners of the art & photography sections work will be displayed in the
foyer.

POETRY / POëSIE
AFRIKAANS
Gr. R - 12

Bepalings vir Poësie:

1. Voorgeskrewe of eie keuse word aanvaar.

2. Die gedig word stilstaande voorgedra, sonder bewegings & gebare.

3. Slegs skoolklere / neutrale drag word toegelaat. (Neutrale drag is swart, sonder prentjies
en helder kleure.)

4. Geen kostuums of rekwisiete mag gebruik word nie.

5. Hierdie voorgeskrewe gedigte geld vir Afrikaans Eerste Taal asook Afrikaans Tweede Taal.

6. ‘n Leerder mag slegs 1 gedig per Afdeling lewer.

SECTION: B
POETRY
ENGLISH
Gr. R - 12

Regulations for Poetry:

1. Prescribed & own choice poems are accepted.

2. The poem must be rendered without movement or gestures.

3. Only school uniform or neutral dress allowed. (Neutral dress is black, without pictures or
colours.)

4. No costumes or props.

5. The prescribed poems are for English First Language as well as English Second Language.

6. A student may only perform 1 poem per Section.

SECTION: C
INSTRUMENTAL

Regulations for Instrumental:

1. Music will be judged according to genre.

2. Any instrument, other than the piano, must be tuned in and brought to the venue in good time, at the
participant’s own risk and removed in the same manner, without encroaching on the time or the programme
or disturbing same. PARTICIPANTS BRING AND USE OWN ELECTRICAL CORDS AND SOUND EQUIPMENT &
STAND.

4. All music and accompaniment must be performed according to the chosen music. A copy of the music must
be given to the adjudicator at the competition. It is preferred that, when a solo instrument is accompanied
by piano, a copy of the full score, solo as well as accompaniment, must be submitted to the adjudicator.

6. No repetitions must be played, except Da Capo.

SECTION: C
Classical

Regulations:

1. No Keyboards or backtracks are allowed in this category.

2. The items are classified according to UNISA or similar standards for music examination grades except the
items for beginners and advanced beginners, in which any piece out of an acknowledged CLASSICAL
beginners book may be presented. THE ENTRY WILL THEREFORE NOT BE ACCORDING TO SCHOOL GRADES!
THE SCHOOL GRADE WILL ONLY BE MENTIONED FOR THE SAKE OF ITEM WINNERS EVENINGS AND TO
DETERMINE THE SECTION WINNERS (ONE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL AND ONE FOR HIGH SCHOOL).

SECTION: C
Pop / Popular / Rock / Jazz / Boogie

Regulations:

1. Keyboards are allowed in this category. Supply own instruments / amps etc.

2. No backtracks allowed for this category, unless permission is received in advance from the Chairperson.

Improvisation / Play by ear / Own composition

Regulations / Bepalings:

1. Any instrument allowed.

2. No sheet music required.

3. Category is for those who play by ear & can’t read music / improvise.

4. No backtracks allowed for this category

SECTION: C
Instrumental Duets

Regulations:

1. Keyboards are allowed in this category.

2. The items are classified according to Trinity, ABRSM , UNISA or similar standards for music examination grades
except the items for beginners and advanced beginners, in which any piece out of an acknowledged CLASSICAL
beginners book may be presented. THE ENTRY WILL THEREFORE NOT BE ACCORDING TO SCHOOL GRADES! THE
SCHOOL GRADE WILL ONLY BE MENTIONED FOR THE SAKE OF ITEM WINNERS EVENINGS AND TO DETERMINE
THE SECTION WINNERS (ONE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL AND ONE FOR HIGH SCHOOL).

3. No backtracks allowed for this category

4. In PIANO DUETS the teacher must play the secondo part, will not be adjudicated and will only pay for the pupil.

SECTION: C
Orchestras / Bands / Instrumental Ensembles

Regulations:

1. Maximum of 3 songs may be entered.

SECTION: D
Vocal

Regulations:

1. No contestant may present the same song twice.

2. Self accompaniment allowed – example: contestant may play guitar and sing.

3. Backtracks only allowed in Contemporary / Pop / Popular section. No CD’s will be used. Music has to be
sent via Dropbox to tcg.eisteddfod@gmail.com with entry. Music has to be in .mp3 / .mp4 / .wav
format. No links to youtube will be accepted.

4. Sheet music (and or words) must be presented to the adjudicator before participation.

SECTION: D
Vocal
Classic

Regulations:

1. Only piano accompaniment allowed.

2. Song may be presented in Afrikaans, English or any other language.

3. The items are classified according to Trinity, ABRSM or UNISA for music examination grades except

Vocal: Solo / Duet

Regulations:

1. Song may be presented in any language.

2. Piano and any other acoustic accompaniment allowed as well as backtracks. (Please note that we
promote piano or other acoustic accompaniment.)

3. Categories to be chosen from:

Contemporary

SECTION: D
Vocal Ensemble

Regulations:

1. This section includes Trio’s.

2. Groups of 4 – 15 contestants.

Choirs:

Regulations:

1. Each choir must perfrom a maximum of 3 own choice songs.

2. Instrumental accompaniment or a cappella is preferred. Backtracks allowed with special permission.

SECTION: F
PREPAIRED ART &
PHOTOGRAPHY

Regulations:

1. All instructions must be followed meticulously. No changes will be accepted after the closing date.

2. All entries must be the learners’ own work.

3. Only one entry per learner per item is permitted. This includes photography.

4. All entries must be done on A3 paper, except for Grade 10-12, who may do their art on A3 or A2 paper as
well as oil paint on canvas. No form of framework (board/glass/wood/steel) will be accepted
No other size will be accepted.

5. The name, school and contact details of participant as well as the medium used, should be posted on the
back of the art work.

SECTION: G
UNPREPARED ART

Regulations:

1. No theme will be provided prior to item actually commencing.

2. Use / bring own drawing material/medium. This includes paper (A3), pencils, etc.

3. No pre-drawings may be brought into the venue.

4. Only learners will be allowed into the venue. No parents.

5. Learners will draw from 14h00 to 17h00.

SECTION: H
PUBLIC SPEAKING / REDENAARS

Regulations:

1. Speech should be debatable.

Moet ‘n beredeneerbare praatjie wees.

2. Time keeping of speeches is of utmost importance.


- High School learners may speak for 5 - 7 minutes.
- Primary School learners :
Gr 1 – 3 : 2 - 4 minutes
Gr 4 – 5 : 3 - 5 minutes
Gr 6 – 7 : 4 - 6 minutes

SECTION: I
Dance

Regulations:

1. TIME LIMITS FOR DANCE SECTION : Time limits will be in place with each and every dance. The music should not be
less than 1 minute 30 seconds and not more than the schedule as set out below. Once over the time limit, the
music will be faded and stopped. Please ensure that the music does not exceed the limits.
1. Solo – 1:30
2. Duet – 1:30
3. Trio/Quartet - 3 minutes
4. Groups - 4 minutes
5. Characters - 4 minutes

2. All dancers to be ready and dressed at least 15 minutes before time of performance.

3. Only teachers and dancers are allowed backstage.

4. During a performance only teachers are allowed in the wings of the stage.

5. Props for Character dances must be removed from backstage once dance is completed.

6. In groups larger than 10 dancers, only one certificate will be allocated.

7. 31 July cut off date to determine age of dancer.

8. The age of the oldest dancer in the group determines the age of the group/duet/trio/quartet.

9. If one dancer is amateur in a group the group dances as an amateur group/duet/trio/quartet.

10. In a group/duet/quartet with a Non School going dancer the group/duet/quartet can not qualify for item winners.

11. A dancer can only enter in a solo according to the age group. No multiple entries in the same form of dance in
different age groups will be permitted.

No CD’s / USB will be used. Music to be sent via Dropbox to tcg.eisteddfod@gmail.com with entry.

SECTION: J
MONOLOGUE / DIALOGUE

Regulations / Bepalings:

1. Time: Maximum of 3 minutes.

2. Monologue: He/she acts the part of ONE character only. Prose will narrate the story of Rapunzel but in a
monologue the learner is Rapunzel. There may be more than one character in the play, but the learner acts
only the part of one. The other characters are only imaginary characters and not seen on stage. The learner
may listen to the other characters, but only his/her response is heard on stage. Monologues are presented
on stage using appropriate costumes, sound effects and decor. He/she acts the part of ONE character only

3. Dialogue: Opposite of monologue. Two participants.

4. The script must be handed in prior to the item.

5. Will be adjudicated according to School grade.

SECTION: J

ENGLISH PLAY / AFRIKAANSE TONEEL

Regulations / Bepalings:

1. Time: Maximum of 30 minutes.

2. This section is for one act plays only.

3. Contestants must take responsibility for their own equipment.

4. You are responsible for the supervision of contestants visiting the hosting school, at all times.

5. A copy of the text and a complete character distribution must be submitted prior to the item.

6. Stage prep : maximum 10 minutes.

7. Will be adjudicated according to School grade.

SECTION: J

DRAMATISED PROSE /
GEDRAMATISEERDE PROSA

Regulations:

1. The learners chooses his/her own prose and renders the piece, using appropriate movement.

2. The stage must also be used effectively. Gestures alone cannot be seen as dramatisation.

3. Prose portrays narrative parts, as well, as characterisation of the various characters.

4. Neutral dress without shoes. No props or costumes may be used.

5. The script must be handed in prior to the item.

6. Time duration: Grade 1 – 7 - maximum 3 minutes

Grade 8 & 9 - maximum 4 minutes

Grades 10 – 12 - maximum 6 minutes

SECTION: J

DRAMATISED GROUP PROSE /


GEDRAMATISEERDE GROEP PROSA

Regulations:

1. Prose, accompanied by movement across the stage, performed by a small group of learners.

2. Gestures only, cannot be seen as dramatisation.

3. Learners choose the piece of prose themselves as it is not prescribed.

4. Time duration: Grade 1 – 7 - maximum 3 minutes

Grade 8 & 9 - maximum 4 minutes

Grades 10 – 12 - maximum 6 minutes

SECTION / AFDELING: K
Unprepared Reading /
Onvoorbereide Lees

Regulations:

1. Literature will be provided by the adjudicator.

2. Participants will be taken to a separate venue on the same premisis. While the first participant is
performing, the next participant will prepare his/her piece of sight reading.

3. Participants will not be allowed to enter the venue before their performance, or leave the venue after
performance, waiting inside until their section is completed.

4. Only learners with good reading skills should be entered.

SECTION: L
MIME

Regulations:

1. The prepared story is performed on stage with the appropriate movements and gestures.

2. The story must have a definite beginning, middle and conclusion.

3. Gestures alone cannot be seen as dramatisation.

4. Costumes or props may be used.

5. The title of the story must be announced before your performance.

6. Maximum time: 4 Minutes.

SECTION: M
CREATIVE WRITING

Regulations:

1. Participants are to hand in a letter from their parents & school teacher stating that the piece
entered is the learner’s own work.

2. Adjudicator can refuse to judge a piece entered, should there be any doubt regarding the
authenticity thereof.

3. Choice language and originality.

4. The chosen theme must be indicated very clearly.

Gr. 4-7: 100-150 words


Gr.8: 200-250 words
Gr.9-10: 250-300 words
Gr. 11-12: 300-400 words
