Calculate the surface area of the solids below.

A Pyramid has a polygonal base with triangle formed from each side of the base.
The triangle faces meet a point called the apex.

Triangular based pyramid.

1
Areaof triangle 1= bh
2
=½x4x6

= 12 cm2

3 cm Area of triangles meeting at the apex are equal, so area = 3 x 12 = 36 cm2

Area of the base(triangle) = ½ bh

=½x3x4

= 6 cm2

Surface of the pyramid = 36 + 6 = 42 cm2

Area of trapezium = ½ (a + b)h , where a and b are parallel sides

= ½ (8 + 14) x 4 = ½ x 22 x 4

6 cm = 44 cm2
3 cm
Since there are 2 trapezia, then their = 2 x 44 = 88 cm2

Area of top rect. = l x w = 10 x 8

80 cm2

Area of right rect = l x w = 3 x 10

30 cm2

Area of the base rect. = l x w = 14 x 10

= 140 cm2

Area of left rect. = l x w = 6 x 10

= 60 cm2

Surface area = 88 + 80 + 30 + 140 + 60

= 398 cm2
Square based Pyramid

Area of front triangle = ½ bh = ½ x 5 x 8

20 cm2

Area of all triangle is the same, therefore 20 x 4 = 80 cm2

Area square base = l x w = 5 x 5

= 25 cm2

Surface area = 80 + 25 = 105 cm2
