1. Provide at least RRL that will support the importance of Multilingual


Education
According to Bussmann (1996), the term multilingualism is derived from two
Latin words namely “multi” that means many and “lingua” that means language.
Thus, multilingualism is referred to as the ability of a speaker to express himself or
herself in several languages with equal and native like proficiency. However, it has
been realized in both the written and verbal communicative practices that proficiency
in one language usually tends to dominate in a multilingual set up as compared to
the others.
Nevertheless, the following are collected Review of Related Literatures that
support the cruciality or importance of Multilingual Education in the classroom:
 Knowledge of more than two languages allows us to communicate with many
people in both personal and professional contexts. This is owing to the fact that
the vast amount of knowledge that people possess is often only effectively
accessible through particular languages whether official or unofficial.
Multilingualism is a big resource (Webb et al., 2000). When one knows the
official language and perfectly speaks the indigenous languages then the
person will be able to synthesis knowledge and express it accordingly. It is
therefore necessary to include indigenous languages in education so as to
realize the benefits of synthesizing and clearly expressing knowledge.

 Multilingualism Education opens doors for quicker and easy communication.


To remove the notion of ‘fixity of reference’, entrenching multilingualism in
education will of course enable one to avoid restrictions in communication thus
enabling him to move to another stage of communication (Okal, 2014).
Multilingualism practices enhance intellectual flexibility and creativity. Recent
studies have indicated that children who grow up in a supportive environment
speaking more than one language from an early age are more perceptive and
intellectually flexible than those who speak one language (Okal, 2014).

 Multilingualism provides an insight into the understanding of different cultures


and experiences hence a multilingual becomes multicultural in nature (Barasa,
2005). Since languages don’t operate in a vacuum, culture and society play a
key role in its existence. This is because language is a sociolinguistic, an
ethno-linguistic and a psycholinguistic issue (Webb et al., 2000). Thus,

language relies on society, culture and mind. In this regard, multilingualism


enhances an automatic understanding and appreciation of cultural values of
the societies that are contained in the concerned languages.

 Multilingualism provides our students with a competitive edge in an


increasingly interconnected world. It equips them with the skills necessary to
navigate global challenges, collaborate on an international scale, and thrive in
multicultural environments. Multilingualism also provides a strong sense of
empowerment. Our students gain the confidence to communicate clearly in a
variety of circumstances as they become more fluent in many languages. They
develop their interpersonal skills and get ready for a day when diversity is the
norm by learning to adjust to various language and cultural standards (Harrow
International School, 2020).

 Embracing multilingualism offers a multitude of benefits for students. From


fostering cultural exchange and global connections to enhancing cognitive
skills and opening doors to future opportunities, language learning is a
powerful tool that equips students with the skills they need to thrive in an
interconnected world (Ochieng, 2010).
