High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35'C, the following guidelines are adopted
as good working practice:

(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled)

environment, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is especially
important to keep cool those surfaces of the equipment which will come into
direct contact with the material itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, arrange temporary
shading as necessary.
(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available to ensure that application
is a continuous process.

Equipment

It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement.

Protective clothing : Protective overalls

: Good quality gloves, goggles and face mask
DO NOT Breathe vapour/spray.

Application equipment : Knapsack type spray equipment

Cleaning equipment : Proprietary blasting equipment Or

High-pressure steam or water jet pump

Application - points of note

Fosroc operates a policy to encourage the use, where possible, of approved or licensed applicators.
This ensures that repairs are completed satisfactorily so that the long term performance of the
materials is assured. For contractors who wish to apply the materials themselves Fosroc is also able
to offer technical assistance and training, either on-site or at its Training Centre in Jeddah.

Section B : Application Method

1.0 Preparation

1.1 The concrete surface should be fresh and free of surface water. Please ensure that there is
no formations of bleed water prior to commencing application.

1.1.1 For new hardened concrete, (after demoulding), the surface should be wet before
commencing application. Dry surface will prove a problem in removing the curing membrane
and will leave stains.

2.0 Application

2.1 Use knapsack type spray equipment for applying Concure WB309 and it will give a
continuous and uniform surface appearance. Maintain pump pressure to give an even
spray.

2.2 Stir the material well before commencing application. By stirring, there should be an even
dispersal of the pigment.

2.3 The spray nozzle should be held at a distance of 450mm from the concrete substrate and
passed back and forth to ensure complete coverage.

2.4 There will be a fugitive white colour formation on the application, which will help in
recognizing the applied areas.

2.5 The application should be continuous and should provide an unbroken membrane.

2.6 Care should be taken that the surface is not trafficked until the membrane dries completely
and the concrete attains it's trafficable strength.

3.0 Overcoating

3.1 Prior to overcoating always ensure that the curing membrane is completely removed
as it effects the bonding of the coating.

3.2 Although Concure WB309 will disintegrate with normal wear and tear of trafficking
and UV exposure, ensure that the curing membrane is completely removed by jet
blasting the substrate with steam or water.
Method statement constructive solutions

4.0 Cleaning

4.1 Cleaning with water will remove the Concure WB309 from the tools and equipment.

4.2 Clean the tool's and equipment's with Fosroc Solvent 102 to remove the wax from the
nozzle.

Section C : Approval and variations

ection C : Approval and variations
This method statement is offered by Fosroc as a 'standard proposal' for the application of
Concure WB309. It remains the responsibility of the Contractor/Applicator to determine the
correct method for any given application.

Where alternative methods are to be used, these must be submitted to Fosroc for approval, in
writing, prior to commencement of any work. Fosroc will not accept responsibility or liability for
variations to the above method statement under any other condition.

THE PROJECT
With the RAF handing Leuchars air base in Fife over to the army at the end of July 2014,
the decision was made to relocate all the rapid response fighters and personnel to RAF
Lossiemouth. With a 7 minute response time in an emergency situation, the fighter
planes are required to taxi to the runway at considerable speed. After an initial survey it
was deemed that the cambered surface on the taxi-way was not sufficiently accurate to
safely support a fast moving, multi-million pound fighter jet. In addition, the entire rapid
response area is a secure location, and security fences and electronic gates had to be
installed to maintain security. These high-tech gates cross the taxi-way, and can only
operate on a level surface (2mm tolerance). With the base going live at the end of July, Applying Nitobond EP
leveling the taxiway was a major priority.

THE SOLUTION
With the help and expertise of Anderson Specialist Contracting a specification was
prepared for planing the taxi-way, applying Nitobond EP to the surface and laying varying
depths of Paveroc (12mm – 100mm). This was accepted by the MoD with the proviso
that the Paveroc be laid to a minimum depth of 30mm. In the areas where the taxi-way
needed to be raised by more than 100mm, the Paveroc would be laid in 2 passes re-
priming the first layer with Nitobond EP before applying the final 30mm of Paveroc. The
rails for the high tech security gates were also to be incorporated into the taxi-way, and Paveroc being mixed in a 40
this meant laying them in place using threaded rods, and grouting them in place using bag mixer
Conbextra HF. To complete the package all the joints in the taxi-way were sealed with
Nitoseal PU878

THE BENEFITS
By providing a fit for purpose specification, and recommending a specialist contractor
highly experienced in the application of Fosroc products, we were able to give confidence
to main contractor Balfour Beatty, as well as decision makers at the MOD and NATO. By
liaising with Anderson Specialist Contracting and submitting accurate forecasts and call
off schedules, we have maintained a reliable supply of materials to the site, amounting Laying Paveroc on a massive
to almost 8500 bags of Paveroc, and Nitobond EP to suit. scale
