Internship Project
My project consisted of 3 separate projects, which were 2 separate posters that they could
hang up in the office, and advertising the office location in Gray since not many people know of
it. I knew for the first part of my project, I wanted to choose a skin condition that was common
but not a lot of people knew about. During my internship, I saw a lot of patients come into the
office with HS. So for this part of my project I made a poster about HS that included: What Is
It?, Classifications, What Causes It, Risk Factors, Prescription Treatment, and At Home
Management.
HS is a condition where small or large nodules form beneath the skin. These nodules are
caused by underlying inflammation of hair follicles, and are often found in the folds of the skin
such as the armpits, groin, buttock, and under the breasts. Depending on the severity of the case,
it can be classified into 3 levels. The first classification is presented as small inconsistent painful
lumps that can appear in many different locations. The second classification is presented as
larger, painful bumps appearing in several places but with more consistency. And the third
classification are consistent abscesses that grow, drain pus and create tunnels beneath the skin
inflammation of the hair follicles, some factors that can play a role include: genetics, smoking,
hormones, and being overweight. People who are more at risk of being diagnosed with HS
include, young adults or teens going through puberty, women, black people, and people who
have family members with HS. There is no cure for this skin condition, but there are ways it can
be managed. Prescription treatment options include: oral antibiotics, topical antibiotics, steroid
injections, hormonal therapy, biologic injections, oral retinoids, and prescription painkillers.
There are also some at home management such as washing with antibacterial soap, zinc + copper
Monroe 2
supplements, working on weight loss through the addition of anti-inflammatory foods, and to
quit smoking.
For the next part of my project I made another poster on the importance of sunscreen. I
decided to choose this topic because a lot of people aren’t aware of how beneficial sunscreen is
to our skin and how we should be wearing it everyday. The 6 sections I chose to talk about on
this poster include: What Is Sunscreen?, Types of Sunscreen, Sunscreen Tips, Types of Skin
Cancer, Statistics, and Who?. Sunscreen, also known as SPF, can protect your skin from a wide
range of damage caused by the sun. The sun emits 2 types of ultraviolet rays that reach the
earth's surface, UVA & UVB. Both types of UV rays have the ability to cause skin cancer, but
UVA rays are responsible for premature aging in the skin, while UVB rays are responsible for
causing sunburn. To protect yourself from both UVA and UVB rays, you can use a sunscreen
labeled “broad spectrum”. There are 2 types of sunscreen on the market right now, chemical &
mineral. The one most recommended by dermatologists is mineral sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens
have the active ingredients zinc and titanium oxide. Zinc does not absorb into the skin so it
creates a physical barrier between your skin and the sun, which is why it’s the most
recommended. Chemical Sunscreens have the active ingredients octocrylene, octisalate, and
avobenzone; which can easily absorb into the skin. Some tips I mentioned are to apply sunscreen
up to 15 minutes before being exposed to the sun. use sunscreens with a broad spectrum SPF of
30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours to reduce the risks of getting burnt. Taking
additional measurements such as wearing sunglasses, sun shirts, hats, and staying in the shade.
The lips are a part of your body that can easily burn so using a lip balm with SPF in it is
recommended. It is also important to know the types of skin cancers you can get from sun
exposure which are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell
Monroe 3
carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer that starts in the basal cells. And it is more
commonly found on the parts of the body most exposed to the sun such as our head and neck.
The second more common is squamous cells which start in the squamous cells. For individuals
with fair skin, it is commonly found in places exposed to the sun. For individuals with darker
skin, it is more commonly found in areas not exposed to the sun. Melanoma is the Deadliest type
of skin cancer, found in the melanocytes. It is most often found in areas exposed to light such as
the arms, legs, face, and back. Some statistics I included are that up to 80% of the sun's radiation
can reach the earth surface, even on cloudy days. UVA rays have the ability to penetrate through
sunscreen daily can decrease the risk of getting squamous cell carcinoma up to 40%, and
melanoma up to 50%. The most important part is who should wear sunscreen. Even people with
dark skin should wear sunscreen, and everyone should wear it everyday.
On Thursdays, I went with my site supervisor to the office in Gray. Not many people
know they are there on Thursdays, so the last part of my project was to advertise the Gray office.
I decided to design a couple of flyers that I could put up around Gray. The first flier is just
advertising the office in general, and I was able to put it in a couple of restaurants, and the senior
center that my grandmother goes to. Though most of the people that go there are elderly, it is the
same building where the county holds elections, so many people will see it that way as well. I
made a second flier to post in the hair salon in Gray, and for this flier I targeted people
experiencing hair thinning and hair loss, and also mentioned that the office offers treatments for
many types of alopecia. Although it wasn’t in the budget to do anything else, my site supervisor
