READING
7 Read the article and choose the correct options.
Crime and punishment
From a very early age, we learn that not following the rules can lead to unwanted results, such as being sent
to your room or not being allowed to go out. For most of us, the negative consequences of some actions act
as a deterrent. We then transfer that awareness into adult life, meaning that we obey the law and generally
follow the rules. A small percentage of the population, however, grow up to break the law, with some
becoming career criminals. These people treat punishment as a necessary price to pay for their illegal activities.
Society has always struggled to work out the best way of dealing with these people.
One common way of addressing the issue is to send people to prison. This raises the question of whether
prison exists to punish people or to prepare them to live as an honest member of society. Historically, prison
was seen as a place where offenders were sent in order to be punished, and sentences often included corporal
punishment as well. In many countries today, prison is thought to work as a deterrent due to the unpleasant
nature of life inside. However, some countries believe that the loss of freedom itself is the punishment and that
life in prison should be at least basically comfortable. In these systems, some effort is made to provide
prisoners with skills that will be useful to them on the outside. This process is known as rehabilitation, and it is
intended to lower the rate of reoffending.

An interesting development for minor crimes is the use of community service as an alternative to prison. This is
particularly effective when the type of community service is related to the crime someone has committed.
Someone who is guilty of vandalism might be asked to work in a park painting benches or removing graffiti,
for example. The idea is that putting something back into your local community helps you realise why rules
and laws exist for us all.
The main aim of community-based sentences is to make the people who commit crimes realise that other
people are harmed by their actions. This process starts even before a crime is committed, with some places
trying to point out the link to deter the crime in the first place. For instance, a playground might just seem like
something provided by the local council, and so some people might vandalise it without thinking. However,
posters made by children asking people not to damage the playground they love can help potential criminals
realise that victims of crime are real and this can help to prevent crime.
1 According to the writer, a small number of people who have been punished as children
A become aware of the need to comply with society’s rules.
B choose crime as a way of life as adults.
C learn how to avoid being punished for breaking the law.
D have problems in pursuing a chosen career.
2 Many countries try to prevent crime by
A ensuring that prison life is as uncomfortable as possible.
B giving more freedom to prisoners serving their sentences.
C equipping prisoners with the ability to live well outside prison.
D extending prison sentences for reoffenders.
3 The aim of community service is to
A keep offenders in the community they come from.
B force offenders to do physical work to help the community.
C educate offenders about the consequences of law breaking.
D ease the problem of overcrowded prison communities.
4 Putting posters in a playground is given as an example of
A showing how children can be influenced by criminal activity.
B encouraging potential offenders to refrain from committing a crime.
C pointing out how criminal actions can harm the offenders themselves.
D illustrating that criminals do not believe they are really hurting others.
