I didn’t know what to do. Then I noticed the woman nearby. She took out her purse, which had a
lot of money in it. She opened her purse and counted the money loudly. The thieves watched her.
Then she dropped her purse! As she walked away, she kicked it into the storeroom.
The thieves went straight into the storeroom to get the purse. Then the woman suddenly came

millions of stars! I didn’t need a telescope!
Nick: There’s one important question I want to ask you: where did you get your
food from? You can’t grow food in space!
Helen: The food came in rockets! Every few months a rocket arrived with fresh
food and food in packets for the astronauts.

Our bodies need to work well. We need food for energy and to make us grow. We also
need food to help us sleep. Carbohydrates, like bread and cereal, give our bodies
energy. Fats, like cheese and olive oil, help to keep us warm. Fruit and vegetables,
such as bananas and carrots, help to keep our brains working. Proteins, for example
fish and eggs, help our bodies get better when we’re unwell. When we eat all these
foods, we have a balanced diet. When we don’t eat breakfast or lunch, we have no
energy and can’t work hard at school.

Simple machines like a slide and a seesaw have only got electric
one part to make them work. An escalator and a bike motor
need more than one part to work. They’re called compound
machines. This is because an escalator and a bike have
got more than one simple machine to make them move. bike wheel
A bike has got a chain and a wheel and axle. It’s also
got two pedals to make the chain move the wheels round
axle
and round.
An escalator has got chains on many wheels and axles.
But an escalator needs an electric motor to move the
chains. Then the escalator can move people up and down
on its steps.

1 Read about how water helps us. Then answer the questions.
Drinking water helps our body temperature to keep us cool. It’s important to
drink more water when we do exercise and sports or when it’s a hot day. When
we drink water, we don’t get very tired and we shouldn’t get headaches. Drinking
water also helps us to think and work better at school. We should drink water
when we have breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Forces are pushes and pulls. When we push or pull something, we move it.
Pushing something moves it away from you and pulling something moves it to you.
For example, we push a supermarket trolley but we pull a sledge. We push a ring
on a finger but we pull on our socks. We can push or pull a door to open and close it.
When you give a skateboard a strong push, it goes faster. When you pull a kite
slowly, you use a weak force. You need a strong force to pull something heavy.
When a magnet attracts a metal key, it uses a very strong force. When gravity
pulls things down to the ground, it also uses a very strong force.

1 when you move something away from you ✓
2 when you move something to you
3 when you move a sledge
4 when you put on your socks
5 when you open or close a door
6 when you run with a kite
3 What do you push and what do you pull? Do you use a strong force or a
weak force?
Materials have got many properties and they’re all different. Materials can be natural. For example,
cotton and wood are from plants, leather is from an animal and iron is from minerals. Some
materials, like glass, paper and plastic, are made in factories. Some materials, like leather, are
strong because they don’t break. Other materials, like clay and glass, are fragile because they can
break. Materials have got other properties. For example, we can see through glass and some plastics
because they’re transparent. And some materials can change their shape because they’re flexible.
Is it a natural material?

1 Read about water. Then match the questions with the answers.
ice cube ice melts water boils water vapour water freezes
and turns and turns into gets cold and and turns into
into liquid water vapour turns into liquid ice cubes again
Some other materials can also change from one state to a different state. For
example, a chocolate bar is solid when we buy it. When we heat it in a pan, it melts
and changes into a liquid. When the chocolate cools, it turns into hard chocolate again.
