Job Analysis

This assignment is a realistic, problem-based project. It is a research report in memo form in which you present your
solution to the problem.

Here’s the scenario: Redbird Public Relations (RPR) needs to hire three top-level executives for its business over
the next 12 to 18 months. Because RPR is new and been growing well, it needs solid information, analysis, and
guidance about what executives in PR ought to be and be able to do, plus RPR needs to know what compensation
executives receive, especially in the Midwest. Your memo, then, is critical to RPR’s future as it will define key
attributes for successful leaders.

You MUST find ONLY top-management level (e.g., chief communications officer, president, partner, vice
president, director) from agencies and nonagencies. You may use any job search resources you wish, especially
those available online. Look particularly at the job postings in the websites for the PRSA, IABC, PR Week, PR
News, and others.

NOTE: “Redbird Public Relations” is a fictitious agency that I made up for the assignment. In this way, you need to
think about what you learned in the textbook and in class so far then apply that information to the scenario’s
problem to be solved. You may make assumptions about what’s going on in Redbird PR as an agency, but make
sure you document those assumptions by stating them and explaining them, including citing any sources you use to
support your assumptions.

Use the memo template (a separate file) for this assignment to write your content. Treat your collection of jobs as a
dataset and each job as a data point. You are to look for patterns in your data and analyze (explain) why they matter
—answer the question, “So what?” For your analysis you MUST use the textbook, sources in the “Career Pathing
Articles” folder in Canvas for your report, and/or other credible and timely sources to explain why the patterns you
found matter and in what ways, including things that are not stated and should be. Review the score sheet for details
about how your paper will be evaluated.

For this assignment you must:

• Collect twelve (12) or more very recent and actual top-management, executive-level job postings from various
organizations (agency and nonagency) and attach them to your report. Refer to them in your memo as needed.
o The job postings must not be more than two months old. (-2 points each for not doing this)
o Evenly distribute the postings among nonagency and agency organizations. (-3 points for not doing this)
o Give the web addresses for each job in the table in the memohead. (-2 points each for not doing this)
o Your memo must be turned in by the date and time in the syllabus and suit a professional setting. So write
your memo in a style that is formal but not stuffy; do NOT write it like a personal journal, a letter to a
friend or acquaintance, or a record of your process. Write to express not to impress.
• The content of your memo will follow the headings in the template. Most fundamentally, you must:
o Write an introduction that summarizes your memo’s content, from its purpose to is method, then state what
the final outcome of the memo will be and the topics you will cover under section headings.
o In each section of the memo:
 Describe (i.e., identify and present) specific patterns in your data that concern job duties, requirements,
compensation, and the other factors in the memo. Follow the memohead’s section headings.
 Analyze (i.e., make sense of and explain) the patterns you see in your job descriptions based on
information from the sources given above about what those patterns are and why they matter. You are
expected perform research about PR executives and use that research to give meaning to your findings
and put them in the context of what is known about PR executives’ jobs. Answer the question, “So
what?” for each topic in the memo.
o Conclude your memo with a section that presents a research-based recommendation about what PR
executives are, do, and earn in all respects under the headings of the memo template.
o Use APA style for in-text source citations, references, and manuscript formatting. Use AP style for all
writing and language use.
o List all your jobs in your dataset in the table given at the end of the memohead. Alternatively, you may
save each job as a PDF file and include all jobs with your finished memo.

***
All of this is due directly to me by email at or before the official starting time for class on the date given in the
syllabus. Late papers will be penalized according to the policy in the syllabus.
