General ABB Turbosystems Ltd has developed a new nozzle ring design. The new
design provides increased flexibility which reduces the risk for deformation
and cracks, see enclosed ABB Service News 03 / 2004.
A nozzle ring which keeps its shape and thus the gas flow path constant
secures a consistent performance of the turbocharger and thus ensures
that the thermal loading of vital engine components is kept within design
limits.
Recommendation Whenever deformation and/or extensive cracks in the nozzle ring is
experienced, or a nozzle ring replacement otherwise is necessary, the new
nozzle ring design must be implemented.
Wärtsilä Corporation and ABB Turbosystems Ltd have settled a mutual
agreement on this procedure.
Failure to comply with this recommendation, as well as application of any
kind of reconditioning of old nozzle rings means acceptance of significantly
increased risk of more extensive and costly damages, and an increased
rate of wear and tear, caused by increased thermal loading.
The new nozzle rings can be ordered from the local Wärtsilä or ABB
network office. The order must be marked with the feature index TN03 for
the slit nozzle ring.

Introduction
ABB has developed a new nozzle ring design, which increases the flexibility of
the vanes to adapt to severe operation conditions with intensive thermal cycles.
The new nozzle ring design features a number of slits in the outer ring, which
allows more expansion and contraction of the vanes.
Recommendation
The experience has shown, that a severe operation with intensive thermal cycles,
e.g. frequent load changes in combination with water cleaning of the turbine side,
may lead to deformation and/or cracks of the nozzle ring vanes.
In order to minimise the deformation of the vanes, ABB recommends to convert
to the slit nozzle ring during a replacement.
The slit nozzle ring is interchangeable with the standard design and can be
ordered at any certified ABB Turbocharger Service Station.
This new type will be available as an option from April 2004. The standard type of
nozzle ring will remain available.

Introduction
In applications where a high number of severe exhaust gas temperature
changes are experienced, cracks may form in the nozzle ring. These cracks
are normally found in the very thin areas of the nozzle ring blades and are
due to the thermal stresses in case of a rapid temperature change of the
exhaust gas. Many engine load changes, start and stop cycles and water
cleaning in operation are typical situations, where the nozzle ring material is
exposed to rapid temperature changes.
In most cases these cracks can be tolerated and are of no concern. They
actually lead to a lower stress during rapid temperature changes, because
there is less restriction of the free expansion and contraction of the material.
Recommendation
Cracks in the nozzle ring form usually early in the nozzle ring life, grow over
a certain time span and come to a stop. There is absolutely no negative
impact on the thermodynamic performance of the turbocharger.
However, in very rare cases cracks may become critical. Therefore, should
you find cracks in your nozzle ring, we recommend contacting an official
ABB service station to clarify any uncertainties. The cracks will then be
carefully investigated and assessed and you can get an expert judgement
about the further use of the nozzle ring.
