CONTEXT AND RATIONALE (BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY)
For centuries chalk has always been a tool used for teaching, it is commonly found
inside classrooms, and can also be seen in different workplaces of different fields. Chalk
is a soft, fine-grained, easily pulverized, white-to-greyish variety of limestone.
The Republic of the Philippines is fighting against the hands of poverty, as its
roots have reached the doorsteps of our sacred schools. Education must be the key to a
successful life but to lose chalk, the symbol of educators indicates that we are moving
further away from what we see as the way to success. We have noticed that the
number of Chalk in public schools is becoming scarce because of the lack of supply in
most schools.
This study aims to produce an Eco-Friendly alternative chalk that can be used in
educational institutions by using a recycled eggshell for production.
1. Does Alternative chalks function better than average chalks in terms of quality?
2. How effective does the alternative chalk work in terms of durability, dustiness,
and marking quality?
3. What are the positive results that are expected in the recreation of chalk using
eggshells as the main material in production?
PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION STRATEGY
In this study, the researchers want to achieve in producing an alternative product
that is comparably cheaper than your average chalk. Our idea of creating the said
byproduct has a component of an eco-friendly material that can be found in our
household.
Proposing and implementing the idea of eggshells as substitute components for the
production of chalk was thoroughly thought by the researchers, hoping this idea could
help coup the shortage of chalk in public schools.
The chalks are considered to be much cheaper than whiteboard markers, plus most
classrooms already have chalkboards to begin with. The reason why whiteboards have
become less expensive as time goes by is due to them being refillable, a trait that
chalks do not possess but according to L. Hough (2017), Chalk is preferred by some
educators because they believe writing with chalk slows down the pace, allowing
students to better follow the lesson and more easily take notes.
The researchers will conduct a survey of school educators regarding the said topic and
ask for insights and opinions on the idea of making a by-product for chalk. One of our
major sources of information is through researching related articles on the said topic
and by visiting the campus library to search for further details that may help with our
experiment. Lastly, in our practical experimentation, we will mainly observe for the
difference through trial and error by constant series of experiments to achieve the
desired outcome.
I. Planning Phase
In this study, Researchers are determining the feasibility of using eggshells to create
chalk, analyzing pertinent studies on the subject of using eggshells to make chalk based
on literature review and preliminary findings, and formulating a study hypothesis.
After the preliminary findings, the researcher gathered supplies, experiment with
eggshell ratios, and record the chalk-making process to observe observations and
difficulties.
Researchers test various batches of eggs to assess the quality, texture, and efficacy of
an eggshell-based test, gathering opinions from educators and potential users. These
data gathered were analysed to be useful and efficiency of utilizing eggshells in place of
chalk.
The data gathered will be endorsed to public instituition so they may be able to
compare them with the original hypothesis and evaluate the efficacy of eggshell-based
chalk.
COST ESTIMATE
After the study is conducted, the researchers will make use of the result by giving the
new production method to public school officials in order for them to review the Egg-
shell Based Chalks if product needed rooms for improvement so that upgrades can be
implemented and for it to finally help with the said problem regarding the shortage of
chalks in public schools.
