Scuba Diving - Trans Notes

The document provides information about scuba diving including what it is, who can participate, basic equipment needed, safety reminders, and a 5-step pre-dive safety check. Scuba diving allows people to breathe underwater using a tank and regulator while recreational and technical diving are common reasons for participation.

WATER RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
5-POINT DESCENT
SCUBA DIVING
Controlled descent – descending to water in a slow and controlled
manner.
Scuba is an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing
Apparatus  Signal (thumbs down) to descend
 Orient to some surface object for reference
Scuba Diving - is a diving method where a diver uses a regulator as  Remove the snorkel and replace it with the regulator
the breathing apparatus and a tank with compressed air mouthpiece
 Time-check
Scuba Diving Can be For;
 Deflate the BCD just enough
 Recreation
 Feet first in descent or at least head is above the feet
 Technical purposes
 Done by the military or highly qualified divers who do Ascending - to ascend, the diver fins upward, generally assisted by
underwater surveillance buoyancy as the surface is approached
WHO CAN SCUBA DIVE HEALTH-RELATED BENEFITS OF DIVING
Basic Consideration:
 Age – as young as 8 years old can learn to swim  Improves and maintains general fitness and stamina level
 Health – It is important for a diver to be physically fit.  Improves cardiovascular performance
 Disabilities – do not hinder anyone from scuba diving  Muscle tone and strength
 Swimming skill – basic requirement is being comfortable in
water

BASIC SCUBA DIVING EQUIPMENT

 Diving mask
 Snorkel
 Regulator – lets you breath underwater
 Buoyancy control device (BCD) – controls the position in SAFETY REMINDERS IN SCUBA DIVING
water Before diving
 Octopus – backup regulator  Make sure you are fit to dive
 Weight belt – counteract buoyancy  Always listen to instructor or dive guide
 Submersible pressure gauge (SPG) – shows how much air  Plan your dive depth, time, and safety stop with your buddy
is left  Choose dives that match your skills
 Scuba tank – contains pressurized air  Check equipment thoroughly
 Fins
 Scuba or Wet suit During dive
 Dive computer – monitors divers depth  Breathe normally all the time
 Dive lights  Equalize your ears frequently as you descend
 Dive knife  Stay aware where your guide and buddy are located
 Dive case  Keep an eye on your air gauge
 Dive withing the limits of your dive computer
 Do not overexert yourself
 Do not touch anything
 Always ascend slowly from every dive
 Listen to inner voice
Pre-Dive
 Establish neutral buoyancy, ensure that ears are ok, check
- entails procedures that divers adhere to
your air and depth, tighten your weight belt, and
communicate that you are ok
Pre-Dive Safety Check
- is a last-minute review done on the boat just before one
After dive
enters the water
 Stow all gear away on the boat
 Debrief with guide and buddy
5 STEPS OF PRE-DIVE SAFETY CHECK  If you feel something strange, let others know
 Do not fly until at least 18-24 hours
 Check the buoyancy compensator
 Check the weights
 Check the releases
 Check the air regulator
 Final okay
