Mars Scavenger Hunt

For this activity you will be required to complete the following scavenger hunt about
Mars. Attached is a list of several items you may choose to do. Although there are
many items listed, you will not be required to complete all the items. Choose the items
that most interest you. The items vary in points depending on the time requirements of
each. The grade you receive on this project depends on the number of points you
earn. You may choose to do more than the required items for extra credit. The project
will be graded as follows:

A 90-100 points
B 80-89 points
C 70-79 points
D 60-69 points
F below 60 points

Please note that you must complete each item to a satisfactory degree in order to
receive the full credit that is listed.
For each item you complete, you must provide a list of references. Items may be
turned in as they are completed. Each student will have a file that will have points
listed as they are earned.
Points Options
List all past and current NASA missions to Mars. Give the name,
dates and explain the purpose of each mission. Be sure to note
25 whether or not the mission was successful and what type of
information was gathered.

Give a listing of times when Mars can be viewed in our nighttime


10 sky. Also include the location of the planet in the sky.

Visit the Mars exhibit at Adler Planetarium. Write a one page


report on the exhibit. Include an admission ticket with a parents

signature.

Design and build a model of a vehicle that could be used for


transport on the surface of Mars. Include a detailed explanation
of your design choice. For example, what type of fuel will your

vehicle use? Overall design must be based on conditions on
Mars. Labeled model must be brought into school.

On page report explaining who Percival Lowell was and what he


10 had to do with Mars.

Create a game that involves answering questions about Mars.

Create a poster of Mars identifying its main geological features.

Scientists are changing their views about life on other planets
such as Mars, due to some of the places on Earth where life has
20 been found. List 3 instances that life has been found under
extreme conditions here on Earth.

Write a short science fiction story about Mars. The story should
be based on scientific facts, but take place in the future.

Minimum 2 pages.

Find and describe two Indian or ancient myths concerning Mars.

Explain what the names Mars, Phobos and Deimos mean.

Find 5 articles concerning Mars from current (this year’s)

newspapers, magazines or journals.
