    Francis Bacon was an Irish-born British painter known for his emotionally raw and graphic figurative paintings often depicting isolated figures. [1] Bacon found inspiration in photographs but would "pinch" details from many contrasting images to develop new ideas in a non-linear, organic process. [2] His famous triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion was influenced by images of slaughterhouses and created over two weeks of heavy drinking. [3] Bacon saw art as accidental but requiring an artist to select which accidents to preserve, and wanted his paintings to evoke the feeling of a human passing between them like a snail's trail.

    I'vealwaysbeenverymovedbypicturesabout slaughterhousesandmeat,andtomethey belongverymuchtothewholethingofthe crucixion.Itappearsbythesephotographsthat theyareawareofwhatisgoingtohappento them,theydoeverythingtoa\empttoescape.I thinkthesepictureswereverymuchbasedon thatkindofthing,whichtomeisverynearthis wholethingofthecrucixion.

Andit'soneoftheonlypicturesthatI'vebeen abletodounderdrink.Ithinkperhapsthe drinkhelpedmetobeabitfreer.
