Remote Sensing

Remote Sensing

Collection of information about type and characteristics of remote objects

Remote sensing is the small or large-scale acquisition of

information of an object or phenomenon, by the use of
either recording or real-time sensing device(s) that are
wireless, or not in physical or intimate contact
with the object. In practice, remote sensing is the
stand-off collection through the use of a variety of
devices for gathering information on a given object or
area.

Useful for avoiding to damage the object, for staying hidden, for
keeping distance from dangerous situations…

Passive systems

Examples: optical systems (cameras), radiometers measuring thermal radiation, …

Remote Sensing

Active systems

Radar, Lidar, Sonar

They do not need external sources as sun light!!

Remote Sensing

Commonly used active systems

• active microwave (RADAR), based on the transmission of long-

wavelength microwaves (e.g., 3 – 25 cm) through the atmosphere
and then recording the amount of energy back-scattered from
the terrain;

• LIDAR, which is based on the transmission of

relatively short-wavelength laser light (e.g., 0.90 mm)
and then recording the amount of light back-scattered
from the terrain; and

• SONAR, which is based on the transmission of sound waves

through a water column and then recording the amount of energy
back-scattered from the bottom or from objects within the
water column.
