CBSE Class 10 Science Chapter 13: Our

Environment - 2 Mark Questions with Answers

1. Define the term environment.

Answer: An environment is the physical and biological surroundings of an organism

or a group of organisms that affect their development and survival. It includes both
living (biotic) factors like plants, animals, and microorganisms, and non-living
(abiotic) factors like air, water, soil, temperature, and sunlight.

2. Differentiate between producers and consumers in an ecosystem.

Answer:

 Producers: These are organisms that can manufacture their own food using
sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Green plants are the
primary producers in most ecosystems.
 Consumers: These are organisms that cannot make their own food and depend
on producers or other consumers for sustenance. Herbivores (plant-
eaters), carnivores (meat-eaters), and omnivores (both plant and animal eaters)
are different types of consumers.

3. Explain the significance of decomposers in the environment.

Answer: Decomposers are organisms like bacteria and fungi that break down dead
and decaying organic matter, returning nutrients back to the soil. This process plays a
crucial role in nutrient cycling, as the released nutrients are then absorbed by plants,
restarting the food chain.

4. What are the main causes of water pollution?

Answer: Several factors contribute to water pollution, including:

 Industrial waste: Untreated industrial effluents containing harmful chemicals

and toxins can contaminate water sources.
 Sewage disposal: Improper sewage disposal and leakage contaminates water
with microbes and organic wastes, leading to oxygen depletion and waterborne
diseases.
 Agricultural runoff: Fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture can run off
into water bodies, causing algal blooms and disrupting aquatic ecosystems.
 Oil spills and littering: Accidents involving oil spills and careless disposal of
plastic and other waste materials further pollute water sources.

5. Describe two ways to conserve water at home.

Answer:
 Fix leaky faucets and pipes: Even small leaks can waste significant amounts of
water over time. Regularly checking and repairing any leaks is crucial for water
conservation.
 Use water-efficient appliances: Install low-flow showerheads, faucets, and
washing machines that help reduce water usage per cycle.

6. What are the benefits of afforestation?

Answer: Planting trees and reforestation offer numerous benefits, including:

 Soil conservation: Trees prevent soil erosion by binding the soil with their roots.
 Improved air quality: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release
oxygen, contributing to cleaner air and combatting climate change.
 Increased biodiversity: Forests provide habitat for diverse species of plants and
animals, enhancing ecosystem stability.
 Regulation of water cycle: Trees regulate the water cycle by absorbing rainwater
and releasing it slowly back into the atmosphere, preventing floods and droughts.

7. Briefly explain the concept of sustainable development.

Answer: Sustainable development is a concept that aims to meet the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs. It focuses on development that considers both environmental, economic, and
social factors for long-term sustainability.
