Assignment 3 : Powder Metallurgy and Welding Techniques
[Dated 13thApril 2024, due on 18th April 2024, 5 pm] General Instructions: 1. Please note that all the assignment solutions must be handwritten and uploaded in lms before the due date. 2. Clearly mention your name and enrolment no. on the assignment. 3. All the diagrams must be drawn neatly with pencil.
Answer the following questions neatly;
1) With the help of neat sketch explain different techniques for powder production in powder metallurgy process.
2) Differentiate between the following;
a) Angle of repose and angle of bite g) Welding torch and cutting torch (with a neat b) Solid phase and liquid phase sintering diagram) techniques h) Resistance spot welding and resistance c) fusion welding and solid state welding seam welding process d) Laser beam and electron beam welding i) Impregnation and Infiltration e) brazing, soldering and welding processes j) Blending and mixing f) forge welding and forging process k) Wave soldering and Reflow soldering l) AC and DC arc welding 3) An EBW operation is used to butt-weld two sheet metal parts that are 1.5 mm thick. The unit melting energy = 7.0 J/mm3. The weld joint is 0.40 mm wide, so that the cross section of the fused metal = 0.40 mm by 2.0 mm. If accelerating voltage = 15 kV, beam current = 20 mA, heat transfer factor f1 = 0.85, and melting factor f2 = 0.70, determine the travel speed at which this weld is made along the seam. 4) A resistance welding performed on two pieces of 2 mm thick sheet steel uses 14000A for a 0.25 s duration. The electrodes are 5 mm in diameter. Resistance is approx. is 0.0002 Ohm, and the resulting weld nugget is 5 mm in diameter, and 2.5 mm in thickness. The specific melting energy for the metal is 15 J/mm3. How much of the heat generated was used to form the weld nugget, and how much was dissipated into workpiece, surrounding air and electrodes? 5) Explain two non-destructive and two mechanical methods for testing the welded joints. 6) Explain the four classes of PM parts. 7) Discuss Powder rolling and PIM processes with the help of neat diagrams. 8) Explain any four welding defects with the help of neat diagrams. 9) Give two advantages and two limitations each for brazing and soldering techniques, in comparison to welding process. 10) Explain any two solid state welding (SSW) processes with a neat diagram. List two advantages of SSW over fusion welding process.
