Fall 2022
FINAL EXAM

Instructions
• This exam has 11 pages. Write your name on every sheet of paper.

• This is a closed book exam. An equation sheet is provided as a separate

sheet. Beam tables are included at the back of the exam. No notes or other
materials are allowed.

• Calculators are allowed, but they cannot be shared. No cell phone calculators.
No laptops, tablets, etc.

• The University of Wisconsin–Madison holds each student’s academic work to

the highest standards of integrity. Receiving or giving aid on this exam is
academic misconduct. Penalties for academic misconduct range from failing an
exam/assignment to expulsion from the university.

• You have 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete the exam.

• Write out equations symbolically and substitute in values at the end.

• Assume all numbers given to you are accurate to 3 significant digits. This
means you should report final numerical answers to 3 digits. Numerical
answers also must include units. Numerical answers like “57.8976” will receive
deductions.

• Free body diagrams and equilibrium equations are required. Points will be
awarded for both.

Question 1C [3 points]:
For the cross-section shown with a stress concentration, sketch the resulting normal stress
distribution at the dashed line.

Question 1D [2 points]:
The humerus bone (upper arm) of baseball pitchers is often a larger diameter in the pitching arm than
in the other arm. Explain why the bone may adapt this way, using concepts from mechanics of
materials.

Question 1E [10 points]:
A square beam (edge length 1 inches) that is 6 feet long is fixed between two rigid plates. The beam
has no stress at 25°C. The yield stress is 250 MPa, the elastic modulus is 200 GPa, and the
coefficient of thermal expansion is 10-5/°C. The temperature of the beam is slowly increased.
a) Does the beam fail via yielding or buckling (circle one)?
a. Yielding
b. Buckling

b) What is the temperature at which failure occurs?

a. 150°C
b. 1025°C
c. 88°C
d. 128°C

Question 1F [5 points]:
Consider the two bolted cross-sections shown below (both cross-sections have the same overall
dimensions and the same even spacing between bolts). Beam A is constructed with two pieces of
lumber bolted with two bolts. Beam B is constructed of three pieces of lumber bolted with two bolts.
The lumber is only connected via the bolts.

If both beams are subjected to the same cantilever loading shown, in which beam (A
or B) will the BOLTS be subjected to the higher shear stress (circle one)?

A B

Justify your answer.

Question 2: LONG ANSWER 1 of 2 [40 points]

A 50 mm diameter rod is subjected at its free end to an inclined force F = 225 N as in the figure.
Determine the magnitude and directions all nonzero stresses due to F at element A at section a-a.
Show the results on the element clearly (next page), related to the point on the rod.

Question 3: LONG ANSWER 2 of 2 [30 points]

Note: beam tables are provided at the end of the exam.
A W10  22 structural steel (E = 29,000 ksi) wide flange shape beam [I = 118 in.4] is loaded and
supported as shown below. The beam is supported at C by a timber (E=1,200 ksi) post having a
cross-sectional area of 9 in.2. After a concentrated load of 10 kips is applied to the beam, find the
force carried by the vertical timber. Use superposition to solve this problem.
