Question 15

The following story leads into the next four questions, it will be
repeated at the start of each of the questions it relates to. Read it
carefully and answer questions 15 through to 18, in relation to this
story.

As part of a school assignment, all the students in Jeff's class were required
to volunteer at the local retirement village. Jeff disliked the idea, and thought
it unfair that the school was forcing him to do community service. "You never
know," Jeff's mum said to him, "You might have fun!" Jeff seriously doubted
there would be any fun involved.

On arriving at the retirement home, each student was assigned to a retiree to

talk with for a period of time. Every so often, they would rotate to a new
person. The first person Jeff was assigned to was an eighty-six year old man
whose name was Fletcher. Fletcher seemed nice, but Jeff didn't know what to
say to him. The only elderly person he had met before this was his
grandfather!

"So what did you do before you moved here?" Jeff quietly asked, as he
glanced around the room.
"Well I have done many things in my life," said Fletcher. "When I was a
young lad, I lived in England with my parents. I used to have great fun
knocking around with the local boys, kicking the football after school, and
would often get into mischief. When my father was offered a job in Australia,
we packed up our things and boarded a boat for the great southern land." Jeff
guessed that catching a boat to Australia would take much longer than flying,
and wondered what it might have been like before aeroplanes.

Fletcher continued, "When I was a teenager, not much older than you, I was
enlisted to join the Army and was sent overseas to fight in the war for my
country. I lost many of my friends there. When I got back I was awarded a
Purple Heart. Do you know what that is Jeff?" "No I don't," Jeff replied.
Fletcher motioned him to follow. "I'll show you," he said. Fletcher opened a
small chest sitting on the table, and inside was a glimmering star with
Fletcher's name inscribed, with the words, "For courage and bravery in
battle." Jeff was amazed of the full life that Fletcher had led, and at this point
in the story he was still a teenager!
"Anyway, after I left the army, I became a carpenter and began working on
the old buildings you often see scattered throughout the city. I got married
and had two children. Then, after retired I drove a caravan all around
Australia for three years." Jeff thought about how fun a three year holiday
would be and hoped he could do the same one day.

45
Edutest practice test for year 5-3

Soon after their conversation, Jeff's teacher knocked on the door explaining
to him that it was time to go. Jeff said goodbye to Fletcher and asked him if
he could visit again. "Anytime you like," Fletcher replied. When he arrived
home, Jeff explained to his mother all about his eventful day and all the
exciting things Fletcher had told him about his life. "Sounds like you had fun,"
his mother said. "Yes, I did. You were right, it was fun," agreed Jeff. Jeff
continued to visit Fletcher each month and both became good friends.

What is the main theme of this story?

Options

A To demonstrate the importance of community service.

B To demonstrate the value of the elderly.

C To demonstrate how those of different ages can get along and have fun

together.

D To encourage more students to take part in community service.

E That people used to live more eventful lives than they do now.

in the story he was still a teenager!

Question 17

The following story leads into the next two questions, it will be
repeated at the start of each of the questions it relates to. Read it
carefully and answer questions 17 & 18, in relation to this story.
