Orifice Flow (Constant Head)

Name: Bermoy, Bethany G. Instructor: Ms. Michelle Daarol

Program: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Code: 2255

I. Introduction

The discharge of water from an orifice is constant if the head above the orifice is constant, which
means that the rate of inflow equals the rate of outflow. As a result, the theoretical discharge is affected
by the head over orifice.

II. Objective

• To determine the flow coefficients of an orifice under constant head.

III. Apparatus/Materials

• Hydraulic Bench
• Orifice Apparatus
• Stopwatch
• Vernier Caliper
• Volume Measuring Cylinder

IV. Procedure

1. Position the reservoir across the channel on the top of hydraulic bench and level.
2. Install the first orifice plate by tightening the knurled knots.
3. Turn on the pump and open the bench valve gradually.
4. Position the overflow tube where it can give a maximum head.
5. Measure the flow rate by timed collection using stopwatch and measuring cylinder and note the
reservoir head value.
6. Repeat step 5 for different heads by adjusting the level of overflow tube.
7. The procedure should also be repeated for the second orifice.

VIII. Discussion of Results/Conclusion

This was done by observing the flow of water through a hole in the side of a tank and collecting
the discharge. The acquired findings were compared to known values for the coefficients determined
from prior studies that were less impacted by mistakes. When the gate opening was impeded by debris
or rather when the tail water level was raised, discharges were substantially lower than the calibration
curve predicted. The impacts of sediment release, high canal velocities, fluctuating downstream water
levels, and debris blockage of the orifice gate were investigated.
