e [e] as in step, men
& [ee] as in flee, see
[ [ai] as in bye, eye
] [oo/uu] as in soup, book
u [a] as in pun, under
i [i] as in rib, sip
\ [oy] as in toy, boy
; [uy] as in buoy, chewy
MANDO’A CONSONANTS
The sounds of Mando’a consonants are:
m [m] as in make
Ť [n] as in not
d [d] as in dad
r [r] as in run
h [h] as in hunt
b [b] as in ball
y [y] as in yes, yarn
t [t] as in tap
x [sh] as in shake
j [j] as in just, jar
k [c/k] as in curse, kill
l [l] as in lost

z [z] as in zap *
g [g] as in gall
c [ch] as in chair
w [w] as in wise
f [f/v] as in funk**
4 beten glottal stop ***
* letter Z is the most uncommon in mandalorian alphabet, only used in transliteration of foreign words or very rarely to indicate
the combination of «ts» which sounds like [z].
** letter F is not present in mandalorian original alphabet but was included in it after the culture made contact with other species
and language and felt the need to transliterate some of the foreign words or names.
*** ‘glottal stop’ is the little pause you make between vowels when you say «oh-oh».
3
WORD ORDER
The word order of Mando’a is in AVOL format the same as with English.
A = Actor
V = Verb
O = Object
L = Location
Example:
TENSES DEFINITION
As it later will be explained mandalorians mostly use present tense, but in some cases when it is needed the future and
past tense can be constructed with use of prefixes «r]4» and «veŤ4».
Examples:
K[x r]4j]r& besbq4trqx aŤ k&rbqj.
He took the weapon to battlefield.
4
VERBS
Mando’a verbs can be made from nouns by adding the appropriate conjugation. In formal Mando’a there is only one
verb conjugation. This is for the infinitive and command forms. The infinitive and formal command forms end in two
ways. With a word that ends in a consonant a vowel and the «-r» must be added to produce the verb. With words that
end in a vowel only the «-r» must be added.
In informal Mando’a there are additional words that allow distinction between other verb forms.
The command verb form is formed by using the word «ke» before the verb or the prefix «k4» when the verb starts with
a vowel. The informal future tense is formed by adding the word «veŤ» in front of the verb. The informal present tense
is formed simply by using the root verb without additional words, prefixes, or suffixes. The past tense of a verb is
formed by adding the word «r]» in front of the verb. To create the negative form of a verb add the prefix «Ť4», «Ť]»,
«Ť]4», or «Ťq» before either the whole sentence or the negative phrase. In sentence the infinitive «-r» in the acting verb
is dropped. The subject verbs are used in the infinitive form.
Example:
Mi daj]Ťa Ťastar or&ya.
We plan to destroy the city.
PASSIVE VOICE
Passive voice in Mando’a is extremely rarely used, for Mando’a is mostly a commanding language.
To create a passive voice from verb a prefix «k]4» (before consonant) or «k;4» (before vowel) was used.
When using the passive voice the object is placed in the beginning of the sentence and the subject is placed at the end
with a prefix «de4», «d4» or «de».
Examples:
Alor4ad k]4k&r4am] r]4t]r de ar]4h]t]Ť.
The captain was killed yesterday by a spy.
The more modern form of creating passive voice is contextual with using verb «k;&r» and prefix «de» for the subject
and putting the object in the beginning of the sentence. But it’s still very rarely used.
Examples:
Ťi s]s]l] k[x.
I hear him.
Ťi r]4s]s]l] k[x.
I heard him.
Ťi k;& r]4s]s]l] de4k[x.
I was heard (overheard) by him.
Or&ya het&.
The city burns.
Or&ya k;& het&r.
5
The city is being burned.
Examples:
Ťi Ťar& epa4aŤ.
I am eating
K[x Ťar& v&Ť&4aŤ.
He is running
Examples:
Gar eŤtq4k&r4am] k[x.
You must (have to) kill him.
6
In negative or question forms of the sentence the prefixes are used as independent words and put in front of the carrier
verb.
Ťq4eŤtq must not / will not have to
Ťq4veg&x should not
Ťq4ret could not
Ťq4g&x shall not
Ťq4veŤ will not
Ť]4d]r may not
Ť]4r]v wasn’t used to
Examples:
Gar Ťq4eŤtq k&r4am] k[x.
You must not (don’t have to) kill him.
T&oŤ4eŤtq gar k&r4am] k[x L
Must you (do you have to) kill him?
VERB TENSES
Just as a reminder, mandalorians rarely use other tenses beside present simple, past and future simple are rare but used
also when needed. Other more complex verb forms are so rare, that you may spend decades inside mandalorian
community and never hear them being used. But for academic purposes, here they all are:
7
FORMING QUESTIONS
The addition of the prefix word «t&oŤ» turns a statement into a question. To form a question the word in question is put
at the beginning of the sentence and the «t&oŤ4» prefix is added to it.
Examples:
Mi h&b&ra maŤdo4a &v&Ť4&x.
We are learning mando’a fast.
There are also specific question words that can be used when making a question. They are:
t&oŤ4ad L Who?
t&oŤ4mqgiŤ L Which? what? (before a vowel)
t&oŤ4mqg L Which? What? (before a consonant)
t&oŤ4t]r L When?
t&oŤ4vqi L Where?
t&oŤ4jor L Why?
t&oŤ4solet L How many? How much?
t&oŤ4bor L How?
t&oŤ4mq L What if?
t&oŤ4beh L What about?
FORMING COMMANDS
The addition of the prefix «ke-» turns a statement into command. To form a command the commanding verb is placed
in the beginning of the sentence and the prefix «ke-» is added.
Examples:
Ťi j]r& beskad ba k&rbqj.
I carry a sword to battlefield
The performer of the task can also be distinguished by the prefix «ke-» but it’s rare.
Example:
Ke4gar j]r& beskad ba k&rbqj k
You carry a sword to battlefield!
8
NOUNS
Gender nouns are the same for masculine, feminine, and neuter. Gender is implied contextually, if relevant. Where
gender clarity is necessary, the adjectives «jag&x» (male) or «dal&x» (female) are added.
PLURALS
Plurals are formed by adding «-q» (after consonant) or «-sq» (after vowel) to the end of the noun.
POSSESSIVE FORM
Creating a possessive form in Mando’a is mostly contextual. The easiest way is using the preposition «be» (of) or
possessive prefix «be4». The difference between them is the same as between English «Saber of Boba» and «Boba’s
saber»
Example:
Kad be Boba Saber of Boba
Kad be4Boba Boba’s saber
Possessives are sometimes indicated simply by the proper noun preceding the word and in informal Mando’a it’s the
most common form.
Example:
Boba4kad Boba’s saber
The rare and archaic form of possessive noun is adding the « 4be» or « 4b» as a suffix.
Examples:
Boba4be kad Boba’s saber
jeti4b kad Jedi’s saber
PRONOUNS
Pronouns have no gender. Most pronouns are also possessives.
Below is a list of Mando’a pronouns:
9
ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS
Adjectives and adverbs are formed by the addition of one of two suffixes. The suffix «-la» should be added when the
root word ends a vowel. The suffix «-&x» should be used when the root word ends in a consonant. Mostly suffixes are
used in a way it would be easier to pronounce or in their traditional form.
Examples:
d&4k]tla
kad4la
k[orla
Examples:
d]x bad
d]x4x&a worse
d]xŤq worst
s&r&x cold
s&r&x4x&a colder
s&r&x4Ťq coldest
d&4k]tla stupid
d&4k]tla4x&a more stupid
d&4k]tlaŤq most stupid
CONJUNCTIONS
ad] who (as in «I knew a guy, who was there»)
bak that (as in «I know that you’ve been there»)
beh about (as in «I never heard about it»)
bor] how (as in «That’s how I did it»)
jor why (as in «That’s why I did it»)
mqg which, what (before a consonant) (as in «My apple, which is bigger than yours»)
mqg&Ť which, what (before a vowel) (as in «My apple, which is bigger than yours»)
mq if (as in «I’ll kill you if you do it»)
t] when (as in «I’ll pay you when you deliver the goods»)
vq where (as in «He never knew where it came from»)
Example:
ax4ad > t&oŤ4axad
Putting beten in the word does not change the meaning, as well as taking it out does not either. The usage is simply for
ease of pronunciation. Sometimes it may be not even «issued» when pronouncing words for there is no difficulty in
pronouncing them. In written Mando’a its main purpose is separation of word roots from one another and separation
of prefixes and suffixes.

CREATING NOUNS FROM VERBS
For the words not having their specific form it’s easy to create a noun from a verb if it ends with «-&r». If the verb
ends in «-&r», to create a performer of the action the ending is changed to «-]r». To create the subject of the action the
ending is replaced with «-ar».
Examples:
v&Ť&r to run
v&Ťar the run
v&Ť]r runner
grat&r to punish
grat&ar punishment
grat&]r punisher
WRITING MANDO’A
For all intents and purposes, Mando’a is a phonetic language, which means, you write the words just as you hear them.
There are no complex letter combinations, diphthongs or special rules for writing certain sounds (like in English «oo»
is read as [u:], but at the same time «door» is read as [do:r]).
Sometimes for dividing certain words that have similar pronunciation from one another, mandalorians use double
consonants or vowels, but they aren’t written as double. They use underbar for indicating the doubled letter.
Example:
al but
al feeling
The other common tool for dividing two similar words is the usage of beten:
Example:
aŤ&la wholeness
aŤ&4la ultimate
12
MANDALORIAN TIME SYSTEM
CLOCK TIME
The time measurements are different than with the standard clock. The Mandalorian time measurement are based on
the k&s4l]Ť, second. There are thirty k&s4l]Ťq in one k]maŤa. A k]maŤa is similar to a minute but is thirty seconds less. The
next unit is the get], there are thirty k]maŤq in one get]. The get] is a quarter of standard hour. The next highest unit is
the hakba. This unit consists of three get]4q. There are twelve get]4q in one hakba. There are eight hakbq in one t]r, day.
Overall length of the day is the same as standard clock, exactly 86 400 seconds.
Mando Clock
2:11:10 (11) = 8:50:11 (am)
The basis for such a complicated time measurement was the need to divide the day into watches or shifts. So firstly the
day was divided into 8 watches, from which 3 were working hours by the roster. The further division into smaller
units came later with the need to specify time in more accurate way.
There are few ways of telling the time in Mando’a.
Sometimes instead of saying «sol]s get]» or «sol]s» mandalorians simply say «get]».
Examples:
Bik get] be k;ir4&x hakba.
It’s one hour of the fourth watch.
Mandalorian week consists of five days. There is no normal «weekends» as there are on Earth like Saturday and
Sunday being weekly holidays, every day in mandalorian week is a workday. Holidays or «weekends» are
traditionally scheduled by roster, but in modern days they are decided mostly by each individual for himself (as many
are farmers working for themselves) or by the employer (in case one works for Mandal Motors for example), in which
case it is again by roster.
Mando English
1 Sol4t]r Monday
2 Tad4t]r Tuesday
3 QyŤ4t]r Wednesday
4 K;i4t]r Thursday
5 Rq4t]r Friday
6 Reso4t]r Saturday
7 Eta4t]r Sunday
Example:
Ibi4t]r xqyŤ4&x be xqk]4t]rar, qyŤ4t]r.
Today is the 8th of the 9th month (September), third week day (Wednesday).
When describing the time of the event the preposition «or» (in) should be used.
Examples:
Mi r]4slaŤa ogir or r]4t]r.
We went there yesterday.
Stating the time for the planned event requires the preposition «xa / xal» (at) when stating the exact time or «or» (in)
when describing the period.
Examples:
Mi ]rs& xa resol bal Ťas be k;ir4&x hakba.
We are meeting at 3:6:00.
Other examples:
Mi veg&x4]rs& r] resol bal Ťas be k;ir4&x hakba.
We should meet before (by) 3:6:00.
The shortest way of telling the exact time where you don’t need to mention minutes is in military style, like in English
saying «8:00 am» as «oh-eight hundred».
Examples:
4:2:00
K;ir, t4ad get]4q.
5:11:00
Rqxe4a, tarq4sol get]4q.

THE RESOL’NARE
The Resol4Ťarq is a code of six acts that define one to be Mandalorian and are the central tenets of their society. This
code is self-perpetuating and was directly responsible for ensuring the survival of the Mandalorian culture and society
long after the original Mandalorians, the Taung, became extinct. Mandalorians who do not or can not embrace and live
according to these tenets are thought to lack Manda and are believed to be dar4MaŤda, a state of separation from the soul
of the people which Mandalorians find emotionally painful and shameful.
Ke4j]r& beskar4gam
(Wear armor)
Once Mandalorians reach adulthood, they assemble a suit of armor that suits their needs and skills and wear it in
public through their daily lives. This armor serves as a tool, a visual designation of their status as warriors and a
symbol of their cultural identity. When among outsiders, many Mandalorians will not even remove their helmets.
Ke4jorha4& MaŤdo4a
(Speak Mandalorian)
While most Mandalorians know and speak Basic and other languages, all are raised speaking Mando’a, the language
of the Taungs. When among themselves, they speak Mando’a almost exclusively. The language itself is very fluid and
simple, reflecting the culture of which it is a part, and like the culture, it has changed very little over the centuries.
K4ara4Ťovo al&t
(Defend the family)
While the Mandalorians are best known as a warrior culture, they are also fiercely family oriented. It is expected that
Mandlorians will start families once they are able to do so. Not wanting to do so is difficult for a Mandalorian to
understand. Each member of a family is expected to protect the others, guaranteeing their survival and through this,
ensuring the survival of the clan and culture.
Ke4ba4j]r& sa MaŤdo4adq
(Raise children as Mandalorians)
It is a Mandalorian’s responsibility to raise children in the traditions of their culture. However this is not simply an
imperative to breed, as it might seem on the surface. Mandalorians often adopt their children, caring very little for
blood lineage and bowing to the necessities created by their lifestyles as nomadic warriors. This act is a mandate to
perpetuate the culture, as are the majority of the Six Acts, by passing it down to both offspring and adopted war
orphans.
Ke4xekqm& ha MaŤd4alor
(Rally to the cause of the Mand’alor)
While the social structure of the Mandalorians is very simple, revolving around family and clan, each clan and family
answering to itself, in times of war all families and clans are expected to answer a call to war by the
MaŤd4alor, the leader of the Mandalorian people.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
First of all. Karen!!!! Wherever you are and whatever you do, we THANK YOU for this wonderful, interesting,
complicated and atmospheric language along with culture and all the rest of the stuff!!!! You, somehow, inspired a
hell lot of people to actually embrace the culture as if it wasn’t a fiction for the book but a living and breathing thing!
Or&4vor4q, Kar4b;ir kkkk
Secondly, George Lucas, Lucasfilm etc. etc. Sorry for the cold acknowledgement, but you did flush all that was
really Mandalorain down the pipes without a second thought. But thanks for the Star Wars universe, we still love it.
Now I personally want to thank the mysterious (to me) individual, who created a well known «Mando’a Alphabet and
pronunciation» guide also known as «MLD.pdf». Vor4q, Ť[r vod k Without this rather compact guide I probably
wouldn’t even go as far as I went. If you do have a name, please come into the light, I want to shake your hand.
Next the greatest thanks goes to the community of Mandoa.org, especially to Adi’karta for creating the place where
people interested in this language can meet and share ideas, helping the Mando’a to survive, grow and develop. And
then to Vlet Hansen, who gave quite a number of ideas and comments on my work, which helped me find errors and
fix them in time. Raeth for great ideas on the grammar expansion. MsLanna for numerous ideas and comments
which are always helpful.
And of course the rest of the people who shared their ideas and word constructs all over the net, mainly on
mandoa.org, and whose word constructs found their way into this guide. You are too numerous to name personally
but your contribution to the development of the language won’t be ungratified! You know who you are, vodq.
And finally thanks to my dear wife for not kicking me out of the house for spending so much time on this! I love you,
darling.
Sincerely yours,
Tal4j[ R]sk
