Flushing and Passivation Procedure For Closed Loop System
Flushing and Passivation Procedure For Closed Loop System
Subject : Flushing & Passivation Procedure for Closed Cooling water system
Dear Sir
Below is procedure guideline for closed cooling system flushing and Passivation.
Normally the cooling water passivation consist of 3 major steps which are:
◼ Step 1 : Flushing and cleaning to prepare the metal surface so that it will be reception to the
formation of corrosion inhibitor film.
◼ Step 2 : Passivation to rapidly establish a corrosion inhibitor film after complete flushing
With NALCO TRAC 109 as Nitrite program base will forms a predominant layer of magnetite on the
surface which help to prevent corrosion problem in the system.
TRAC109 TRAC 109 Minimizing corrosion in the closed cycle cooling water system. Nitrite with
copper inhibitor, stable Nitrite in system. Excellent corrosion preventing.
Treatment Program will cover: MS, Copper and SS material
This program is not accept for any Galvanized Coating
1) Clean & flush the whole system with Demin water until Turbidity is less than 10 NTU or approach to
Turbidity of makeup quality, and also Total iron should achieve lowest as possible (Recommend Total
iron after final flushing should not exceed 1 ppm).
Noted: During flushing step, SHOULD NOT isolate some equipment part involving with this water loop, and
please open all draining valve to remove dirt, turbidity and iron out of the system as much and fast as
possible.
2) Re-collect water to confirm its quality before adding chemicals to ensure that Turbidity and Total iron
in the system is on controlled as recommend in No. 1.
3.) Empty system again and refill demin water to system. (Recommend to complete No.1- No.3 within 1-
2 days only, and/or as fast as possible to prevent flash corrosion or rust happened due to stagnant
condition).
4.) Then, suddenly slug dose TRAC 109 and NALCO 7330 as recommend dosage initial program
a. Firstly, add N7330 as below quantity and circulate for 30 minutes for sanitizing system.
b. Then, add TRAC109 as below quantity and circulate to homogeneously mix all chemical and
begin passivation as least 48 hrs to introduce passivated film formation.
3
Once a month for quality checking as closed cooling standard below in normal operating conditions:
Remarks:
• !!! Any leakage of closed cooling water need to top up with chemicals as recommended dosage
to maintain Nitrite > 600 ppm (Need TRAC109 = 2,400 ppm)
• Total Iron should be less than 1 ppm for new startup system which is the best condition.
▪ It is critical that flow be maintained throughout the system to ensure effective corrosion
protection.
▪ It is recommended that circulation be maintained 4-12 hours per day during idle periods. This
ensures that there are no areas of depleted corrosion inhibitor. Ultimately, this minimizes the
potential for corrosion to occur.
