(1) There are two basic modes of operation: normal mode and maintenance mode. For
normal mode, the unit is either in the Transmit or Armed state. For maintenance mode the
states are OFF and Self-test.

NOTE: Self-test is a temporary state only. The rotary switch must be manually placed and
held in this position for the duration of the self-test. As soon as the user releases
the rotary switch, it will return to the "Armed" position.
(2) Figure 1 shows the system states, and the available transitions.

(a) Description of State

1. Armed State
a In the Armed state, the RESCU 406(SE) TM ELT is operational and ready
to be activated by the presence of water or manually by placing the rotary
switch in the "Transmit" position.

b The RESCU 406(SE) T M ELI shall draw less than 1J1 A of current when in
the Armed state.

Transmit State

In the Transmit state, the RESCU 406(SE) l ELI transmits emergency

locator signals on all three frequencies (121.5 MHz, 243.0 MHz, and 406.028
MHz). This state may be initiated by either of two means:

Through water activation while in the Armed state.

Through manual activation by placing the rotary switch in the Transmit

position (XMl).

3 Off state

In the Off state, the RESCU 406(SE) II ELI is disabled and does not
dissipate any power. The RESCU 406(SE) TM ELT may be placed in this state
only by manually placing the rotary switch in the 'Off' position.

4 Self-test state
The self-test state validates the capability of the RESCU 406(SE)' ELT. This
is a temporary state that terminates by returning to the Armed state. The
self-test state is activated by turning the rotary dial to the "TEST" position and
holding it in this position for approximately five seconds. The LED indicator at
the top of the RESCU 406(SE) TM ELT will flash eight times (with a 0.5 second
delay between flashes) to indicate a successful self-test.

4. Operating Instructions

A. General
NOTE: Unauthorized operation may be in violation of the applicable government regulatory
authority rules (e.g. USA-FCC) and may be subject to penalties such as a fine or license
revocation.
Operating instructions are given in English/French/Spanish on the operating instruction plate
affixed to the orange transmitter cover.

B. Manual Deployment in Water

NOTE: Refer to Figure 2.

(1) Open quick release latches of stowage bracket and remove RESCU 406(SE) ELT.

(2) Break tape holding cord wound on lanyard card and pull clear of RESCU 406(SE) TM ELT.

(3) Tie cord securely to suitable tethering point of life raft or boat.

(4) Make sure that the four-position switch is in the ARM position (visible on the switch at the
antenna base).

(5) Place RESCU 406(SE) TM ELT in sea water beside life raft.

(6) After approximately 10 seconds, the flashing LED light will be visible at the transparent
bushing cover located on top of the transmitter cover.

(7) After approximately five minutes, the antenna will automatically deploy to the upright
position.

NOTE: Effective transmission of the emergency signals, do not occur until antenna
is in the upright position.

D. Manual Deployment on Land

NOTE: Refer to Figure 3.

(1) Open quick release latches of stowage bracket and remove RESCU 406(SE) TM ELI.

(3) Manually set four-position switch to "XMl" mode.

WARNING: HOLD RESCU 406(SE)rM ELT SO THAT ANTENNA IS POSITIONED

AWAY FROM ALL PERSONNEL AND OBSTRUCTIONS DURING
ANTENNA ERECTION.

(4) With hand over antenna, break tape holding antenna and allow antenna to erect.
(5) Crouch below the level of the antenna base (top of unit housing) or stand clear of antenna
(approximately 30 ft. (9.2 m)) for best transmission.
E. Temporary Deactivation

To temporarily interrupt transmission, set RESCU 406(SE) T M ELI four-position switch to the OFF
position.

F. Resume Transmission

To resume transmission set the RESCU 406(SE) TM ELI four-position switch to the "ARM" or
"XMl" position for operation on water or set the RESCU 406(SE) TM ELI four-position switch to the
"XMl" position for operation on land.

G. Deactivate After Rescue

To deactivate after rescue, set the ELI four-position switch to the OFF position.
J S. RESCU 406(SE) TM ELT Mounting Bracket Installation and Removal (Refer to Figures 4 to 8)

CAUTION: THE RESCU 406(SE) TM ELI MUST BE PROPERLY SEATED IN THE

MOUNTING BRACKET TO PROTECT THE ANTENNA FROM DAMAGE
DURING AN EMERGENCY THE RESCU 406(SE)IM ELT SHALL BE
INSTALLED IN THE BRACKET SUCH THAT THE STOWED ANTENNA IS
WITHIN THE MOUNTING BRACKET CHANNEL.

(1) The aircraft installation system consists of the RESCU 406(SE) TM ELT mounted within the
mounting bracket. The mounting bracket has been developed to allow maximum flexibility
in selection of the location and orientation of the installation.
(2) The mounting bracket has been designed to increase the permissible installation locations
(refer to Figure 5, Figure 7 and Figure 8). The new mounting system incorporates the
following enhanced features:

Incorporates two separate release mechanisms, as follows:

(a) Two standard release latches that allow for easy release and removal of the
RESCU 406(SE)TM ELI

(b) Quick release pull handle to facilitate installation and easy removal in "doghouse",
and overhead compartments (refer to Figure 6 for removal procedures).
