Buckingham Palace

It is the London residence and administrative headquarters of the monarch of the United
Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions
and royal hospitality. It has been a focal point for the British people at times of national rejoicing
and mourning.

Tes Persiapan Ujian Nasional 2 Kelas 9 SMP PRIMAGAMA – 6

Originally known as Buckingham House, the building at the core of today's palace was a
large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site that had been in private
ownership for at least 150 years. It was acquired by King George III in 1761 as a private
residence for Queen Charlotte and became known as The Queen's House. During the
19th century it was enlarged, principally by architects John Nashand Edward Blore, who
constructed three wings around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace became the London
residence of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837.
The last major structural additions were made in the late 19 th and early 20th centuries,
including the East Front, which contains the well-known balcony on which the royal family
traditionally congregates to greet crowds. The palace chapel was destroyed by a German bomb
during World War II; the Queen's Gallery was built on the site and opened to the public in 1962
to exhibit works of art from the Royal Collection.
The original early 19th-century interior designs, many of which survive, include widespread
use of brightly coloured scagliola and blue and pink lapis, on the advice of Sir Charles Long. King
Edward VII oversaw a partial redecoration in a Belle Époquecream and gold colour scheme. Many
smaller reception rooms are furnished in the Chinese regency style with furniture and fittings
brought from the Royal Pavilion at Brighton and from Carlton House. The palace has 775 rooms,
and the garden is the largest private garden in London. The state rooms, used for official and
state entertaining, are opened to the public each year for most of August and September and on

Text for Questions 24 to 27

As a kid, I used to read a lot of story books. In one particular book, I read a story of a bird. From
then on, that has become an integral part of my life. It described a male bird which takes a lot of
pain to build a nest and the female bird takes shelter in it and nourishes the baby. When the bird
learns to fly, the whole family flies off to a different place leaving behind the beautiful nest for other
birds to grow their family in it. It made me wonder. How could they so easily sacrifice their house
built with so much effort?
I used to hold my dad’s hand and go for a walk, I always observed the surroundings. It always
made me curious to know the things that the book had taught me. I used to ask innumerable
questions to my dad but he never grew tired of answering them.

One night, when I was deep in sleep, I got this particular dream. I was walking miles on the
endless road, totally isolated but flanked with beautiful trees on the either side. Fascinated by the
greenery, I marched towards it only to end up deeper and deeper into the greenery. I happened to
stop upon seeing something. It was a massive, wonderful bungalow. I fell in love with that amazing
part of art. Yeah, it was indeed a piece of art with every nook and corner touched artistically and
lovingly. I don’t know why I felt that it was done lovingly. May be because, things turn out to be
beautiful only when we put our love into it- just like the delicacies prepared by mom which taste
more delicious with her love.
I explored the house only to fall more in love with it. There was a sloping roof which matched
with the greenery around; the large central open courtyard reminded me of the activities that might
have taken place there which felt lively even now when it is completely deserted. The chandeliers and
the beautiful interiors made me nostalgic; the small water body that kept the house cool added to the
beauty of the house- of course, it was all dried up now. It’s really wonderful how such things add life
to the spaces which otherwise just become structures. Such liveliness and happening converts the
house into a home. They say ‘THE HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS’, but now I began to feel it. This
is where my heart belongs. This is what I’m destined to do.
When I woke up from the dream, I was clear about everything. I realized where that mile of walk
was intending me to lead. I realized what message my dream wanted to convey me. And years later,
when finally my turn of choosing my destination came, I simply closed my eyes, held that book in my
hand, pressed it against my chest and relived the dream. When I opened my eyes, I was sure what
to do. I decided to choose the road- less traveled. Yes, I took up architecture as my profession
because this is what I am destined to do. I wanted to do the same thing that the male bird in the
story did, to take pain in building a beautiful house and let others stay in it. This is my dream come
true and the happiness that I derive now from this profession is indescribable.

SIAP SELEM

Once upon a time there was a black hen named Siap Selem which had seven chicks.
Doglagan was the youngest chick. There was also a cat named Men Kuuk lived in the same place
as the black hen which also had many kittens. Men Kuuk frequently made strategies to eat the
black hen with her chicks. Every night Men Kuuk with her kittens talked about the black hen. “I’ll
eat the feet, the wings is mine, no…the neck will be delicious, I prefer the head”. Said Men Kuuk
and her kittens.
One day, the fur of the six black hen’s chicks had grown. Unfortunately, the fur of the
youngest chick did not grow yet. In a midnight, the black hen told her chicks, “You all have to fly
away from here one by one, because if you’re still here you will be caught and eaten by Men
Kuuk!”. The flight was started from the oldest chick.
“Buuuurrrr,,”, and Men Kuuk asked, “Black hen, what was that?”, “that was a pecan leave”.
Answered the black hen. Followed by the other chicks. “Buuuuurrrr,,”. And Men Kuuk asked
again, “Black hen, what was that?” “that was a bamboo leave”. Answered the black hen.
All of the chicks had flown, but there was still Doglagan who could not fly because he had no
wings. The black hen told him, “I’ll leave you here, you’ll be safe, you’ll not be eaten by Men
Kuuk. If one day you’ll be eaten by Men Kuuk, you have to say “Men Kuuk, you’ll be disgusted to
eat me because my flesh is still bitter. Later if my flesh has been delicious you’re allowed to eat
me anytime”.
Afterwards, the black hen flew leaving Doglagan. At that time, Doglagan was alone in that
place. Men Kuuk heard Doglagan, “kiaaak,,kiaaakk,,kiaaak”. Men kuuk was wondering, “why
Doglagan is crying alone? Where is his mother?”, ooohhh, it might be the pecan leave and
bamboo leave that fell yesterday as the black hen said. Suddenly, the kittens came and wanted to
eat Dogladan.
“Don’t eat me now, you’ll be disgusted to eat me because my flesh is still bitter. Later if my
flesh has been delicious you’re allowed to eat me anytime”, said Doglagan.
Men Kuuk trusted Doglagan and she imagined Doglagan with thick fur. In the next day, what
Men Kuuk had imagined was true. Doglagan had thick fur and beautiful color. It made Men Kuuk
and all the kittens came to him and wanted to eat him again. Doglagan said, “Now, you’re
allowed to eat me, but I have one request for you. Before you eat me, you must be flying me
eleven times in order my blood will be mixed with my flesh, that will be delicious to be eaten!”.
Men kuuk accepted Doglagan’s request, she flew Doglagan. In the first flight Doglagan fell down
to Men kuuk, so do in the next flight. But in the last flight, “Men kuuk, now is the last time that
you have to fly me as high as possible”. Said Doglagan. Men kuuk flew Doglagan very high. She
did not realize that Doglagan deceived her.
Eventually Doglagan flew away from Men kuuk. He went to a forest to look for his family.
Men kuuk and her kittens had been deceived by Doglagan. Finally they had nothing to eat.

Text for Questions 36 to 39

Salar de Uyuni

It is the world's largest salt flat, at 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 sq mi). It is in the Daniel
Campos Province in Potosí in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes and is at an elevation of
3,656 meters (11,995 ft) above sea level.
The Salar was formed as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. It is
covered by a few meters of salt crust, which has an extraordinary flatness with the average elevation
variations within one meter over the entire area of the Salar. The crust serves as a source of salt and
covers a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium. It contains 50% to 70% of the world's
known lithium reserves. The large area, clear skies, and exceptional flatness of the surface make the
Salar an ideal object for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites.
The Salar serves as the major transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano and is a major
breeding ground for several species of flamingos. Salar de Uyuni is also a climatological transitional
zone since the towering tropical cumulus congestus and cumulonimbus incus clouds that form in the
eastern part of the salt flat during the summer cannot permeate beyond its drier western edges, near
the Chilean border and the Atacama Desert.
Salar de Uyuni is part of the Altiplano of Bolivia in South America. The Altiplano is a high plateau,
which was formed during uplift of the Andes mountains. The plateau includes fresh and saltwater
lakes as well as salt flats and is surrounded by mountains with no drainage outlets.
The geological history of the Salar is associated with a sequential transformation between several
vast lakes. Some 30,000 to 42,000 years ago, the area was part of a giant prehistoric lake, Lake
Minchin. Its age was estimated from radiocarbon dating of shells from
outcropping sediments and carbonate reefs and varies between reported studies. Lake Minchin
(named after Juan B. Minchin of Oruro later transformed into Paleo Lake Tauca having a maximal
depth of 140 meters (460 ft), and an estimated age of 13,000 to 18,000 or 14,900 to 26,100 years,
depending on the source. The youngest prehistoric lake was Coipasa, which was radiocarbon dated to
11,500 to 13,400 years ago. When it dried, it left behind two modern lakes, Poopó and Uru Uru, and
two major salt deserts, Salar de Coipasa and the larger Salar de Uyuni. Salar de Uyuni spreads over
10,582 km2, which is roughly 100 times the size of the Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States. Lake
Poopó is a neighbor of the much larger Lake Titicaca. During the wet season, Titicaca overflows and
discharges into Poopó, which in turn, floods Salar De Coipasa and Salar de Uyuni.

THE DOG, THE COCK, AND THE FOX

A Dog and a Cock, who were the best of friends, wished very much to see something of the
world. So they decided to leave the farmyard and to set out into the world along the road that led to
the woods. The two comrades traveled along in the very best of spirits and without meeting any
adventure to speak of.

At nightfall the Cock, looking for a place to roost, as was his custom, spied nearby a hollow tree that
he thought would do very nicely for a night’s lodging. The Dog could creep inside and the Cock would
fly up on one of the branches. So said, so done, and both slept very comfortably.

With the first glimmer of dawn the Cock awoke. For the moment he forgot just where he was. He
thought he was still in the farmyard where it had been his duty to arouse the household at daybreak.
So standing on tip-toes he flapped his wings and crowed lustily. But instead of awakening the farmer,
he awakened a Fox not far off in the wood. The Fox immediately had rosy visions of a very delicious
breakfast. Hurrying to the tree where the Cock was roosting, he said very politely:
